DAYTON - Four second- half turnovers and costly penalties at the most inopportune times doomed Dayton to a 6-0 defeat in its first league game last Friday versus Asotin. Asotin stymied Dayton's offense the entire first half, rarely giving the Bulldogs a chance to possess the ball, let alone move it down the field. The Bulldogs tallied a meager 25 yards on only 15 plays. Meanwhile, the visiting Panthers racked up 127 first half yards on 32 plays, mostly on the ground. The few times the Pa...
ATHENA, ORE. - Waitsburg Prescott faced its greatest adversity of the season against the Weston-McEwen TigerScots last Thursday, but the Cardinals erased its first halftime deficit of the season by putting on a second half football clinic en route to a comfortable, 39-13, victory. It looked like it might be an easy game for the Cards early on. On first possession, WP quarterback Sterling Eastman connected with receiver Chance Leroue for a 73-yard touchdown- the first of two long touchdown co...
WAITSBURG - What's the difference between the machine-gun quick, NCAA national title contending University of Oregon football team and the 2012 edition of the Waitsburg-Prescott Cardinals? After the way the Cards dominated Pilot Rock, Ore., in a 35-21 victory that wasn't nearly as close as the final tally, the answer might be: only the color of the uniforms. WP head coach Jeff Bartlow's team took a page from Chip Kelly's Ducks' book, as his team over-powered the Pilot Rock offense, forcing four...
WAITSBURG - Waitsburg Prescott took on perennial Oregon powerhouse Heppner here Friday night and did more than win. The Cardinals laid a 41-6 beatdown on the Mustangs that served notice to the rest of the states' 2B schools that WP's quest for a repeat championship isn't hype. It's real. And it wasn't just the point differential that impressed. It was the nearly flawless passing attack (one incompletion in 13 attempts), and the stifling defense that yielded just 188 yards on the night-just...
DAYTON -- If Dayton wants to repeat as league champions this year, they will have to do it with a var- sity squad half-composed of sophomores and freshmen. Fortunately for Dayton, all three projected sophomore starters saw significant time as freshmen on last years' title team. Two seniors and one junior return as well. The graduation loss of three impact players from 2011, how- ever, leaves 10th year Bulldog coach Shannon Turner with some holes to fill. Libero/Hitter Nicole Lambert, setter...
WAITSBURG -- Waitsburg- Prescott came oh so close to a state tournament bid in 2011, falling two points shy of a trip to Yakima in the district cham- pionship match versus Asotin, then losing their second chance to earn a state berth with a loss to DeSales in the loser-out final. The Lady Cards will have to make this year's attempt for Yakima minus the 1-2 scoring punch of departed senior hitters Ronnie Hulce and Dionna Baker and 3-year varsity setter Kayla Huxoll. And while there is still a...
DAYTON - The 2011- 2012 school year was Dayton's most successful year on the boys' side of athletics in quite some time, with a state tourney appearance in basketball and a near-miss in football. The same leading players- mostly seniors-filled out the rosters of both teams. Now that the likes of skilled players Colton Bickelhaupt, Hayden Fullerton and Joey Schlachter, and massive lineman Kroft Sunderland have moved on, this year's admittedly short-handed, 23-man Dayton football squad will...
WAITSBURG -- Waitsburg-Prescott lost six award-winning seniors from its undefeated and state championship- winning 2011 football squad. With the loss of so much skill, experience, and size on the lines, at quarterback, and at key defensive positions, it is perfectly reasonable to assume 2012 will be a rebuilding year for the Cardinals. But your assumption would be wrong according to WP head coach Jeff Bartlow. "We had a big junior class that played significant roles last year in the ch...
This is the third year in a row that I've worked harvest with my cousin and uncle, David and Del White. I am a teacher by trade, so sum- mer break is a great time to make a few extra bucks doing harvest jobs. I drive wheat trucks. Because fewer and fewer people around these parts farm for a living anymore, I thought it a good idea to keep a journal of my days in the field so that the uninitiated might have a better understanding of the ups and downs of harvest life. Saturday, July 28 Harvest...
CAMP WOOTEN - The snow is gone, and eastern Washington's closest designated Environmental Learning Center in the state parks system is open for business for the 2013 season. Camp Wooten, located about 31 road miles from Dayton, deep in the upper Tucannon River valley, kicked off its season in mid- March and will remain open through October. The 200-person occupancy camp has already hosted three groups from across the region this year, and park ranger Jennifer Bristol says many local gro...
PRESCOTT - The Waitsburg-Prescott Tigers dropped a solo affair Tuesday afternoon-the Tigers first game in over two weeks-11-1 to Mac-Hi of Milton-Freewater, Ore. The Tiger loss was only its third of the season, and first by a 10-run margin. WP starter Dalton Estes set the Pioneers down in order in the first inning, but gave up two runs in the second on a 2-RBI single by Mac-Hi second baseman Blake Yensen. WP narrowed the gap to one run in the third. Centerfielder Nolen Allen and second baseman Kyle Dozier led off the inning with b...
