WAITSBURG – Mayor Marty Dunn called 2017 "one of the busiest years on record" and says the City of Waitsburg can look forward to continued infrastructure improvements in 2018, with planning into 2019. To make that happen, the city council approved a $2.17 million budget for 2018 at their Dec. 20 regular council meeting. Accomplishments for 2017 include filling several long sections of sidewalk gaps to improve the city's walkability, relining a failing storm drain on Main Street to complete the f...
DAYTON – Aspiring perfomers are invited to participate in Touchet Valley Arts Council's Spring Variety Show in March and/or a May Melodrama. Tracy Barron and Jae Nichols will once again direct the annual variety show which will run March 16-18. This year's theme is "Delightful, Dazzling, and Dandy!" The variety show is a great way to display local talent of all ages, without performers having to make the much larger time commitment required for the live fall production. It is also an ideal i...
WAITSBURG – All eyes were on the Touchet River and Coppei Creek last week as warm weather and heavy rains resulted in flood advisories throughout the Touchet Valley. While there was no significant flooding this go-round, it is only a matter of time before the valley sees another high water event, like the Flood of 1996. That knowledge is what prompted the Waitsburg City Council to commit to a flood feasibility study with the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) at their Dec. 20 regular meeting. C...

The former Waitsburg City Fire Department operated successfully as Columbia-Walla Walla Fire No. 2, the city organized a tree committee and a fairgrounds task force to deal with ongoing issues of public concern and the newly replaced Waitsburg Main Street Bridge opened to traffic in December. As 2017 ends, the school district, under the guidance of new District...

How much will actually be collected, however, is yet to be determined. Beginning in 2018, the state will begin collecting a state school levy of approximately $0.84 per $1,000 dollars of assessed value in Walla Walla County. According to the McCleary decision, passed in 2012 to “fully fund” education, school enrichment levies (formerly called maintenance and opera...
DAYTON – A spur-of-the moment call in to The Michael Smerconish Program on Sirius XM resulted in a nice bump in sales for Mary's Candies in Dayton, this month. Candy maker Nathanial Murphy was listening to the program when the hosts took off on a tangent bemoaning the lack of U.S. made goods. People began calling in and naming U.S. based companies they supported. Co-owner (and Nathanial's wife) Erin Murphy decided to call in and introduced Mary's Candies as a small U.S. manufacturer that uses al...
WAITSBURG – The holidays are typically the season for spreading good cheer, but for Ffrazure Earthworks Excavation, doing good deeds appears to be everyday business. Ffrazure Earthworks spent much of summer and fall in Waitsburg as a sub-contractor for Moreno-Nelson, which was contracted by the city to install sidewalks. Stories abound about how the company went “above and beyond” as they performed work in the city. Nancy and Jack Otterson, who live on W. 4th St., said they were “very aware” tha...

The letter states that millions of dollars are unclaimed and can be split with the letter recipient, through a “confidential” process. The recipient is told not t...

Two years ago, Waitsburg approached the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) about completing a flood feasibility study for the city through a federal program that shares both the cost of the study (planning) and construction following the study. The program requires municipalities to pay half o...
