  • Third Time’s A Charm For Dayton’s Lowes

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 29, 2010

DAYTON - Duane and Brenda Lowe will close shop on Brenda's Discount and Antiques on the corner of 4th and Main in Dayton next month, but it won't likely be the last time this couple "retires." After all, this is the third time Duane has retired. And Brenda says antique dealing is in her blood. "I'm not getting out of it, that's for sure. I love it. I love the people, and I like pretty things," she said. The Lowes opened the shop in May of 2007. Brenda got into antiques about a year prior and sold old furnishings, toys, decorations, handmade apr...

  • New Barber Comes To Dayton

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 29, 2010

DAYTON - Men of Dayton will no longer have to drive to another county to have their hair trimmed and groomed. Ray Romero's expert hands will soon be at their service. Beginning in January, the Milton-Freewater barber will open shop at 112 N. 1st Street in Dayton, in the former location of Steve's Barber Shop. "We've passed through town quite a few times in the past and thought it was a very neat and quiet town," Romero said. "People have told us everyone here is very friendly and active in the...

  • Dayton Considers Security Cameras

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

DAYTON - Though the old story that teachers have eyes in the back of their heads turns out to be untrue, school officials in Dayton hope to keep a watchful "eye" on certain high-risk areas on school grounds with a new security camera system. "I hate security cameras," said Superintendent Doug Johnson. "But I'd rather make a couple thousand dollar investment in cameras than keep spending money on clean up." Vandalism at the Dayton School District has grown more frustrating over the last 18 months to two years, Johnson said. This year the distric...

  • Boys Suffer Narrow Losses

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

ASOTIN - Dayton boys struggled to retain a winning edge in their last two away games against Waitsburg and Asotin over the weekend. Their heartbreaking twopoint 36-34 loss to the Cardinals Friday came with less than a minute before the end of the game. In Asotin on Saturday, the Panthers got a quick jump on the Bulldogs and the Dayton boys just couldn't keep up after that, trailing until the final whistle sealed Asotin's win 67-51. Panther Ben Servatius came out hot in the first quarter, shooting six for nine and scoring 14 points for Asotin....

ASOTIN - Saturday night's game against the Lady Panthers was another loss for the Lady Bulldogs with a final score of 59-46, but it was an improvement over their defeat against WP Friday. Against WP's larger, more experienced team, the Lady Bulldogs fell 68-33. On Asotin's court, the Dayton girls had to push hard to keep up. Nicole Lambert led with 13 points, followed by Jessica Tate with eight. Both Samura Miller and McKayla Bickelhapt scored seven points. Zara Reynolds led Asotin with 14...

  • Sex Offender Won’t Return Here

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

WAITSBURG - The Walla Walla County Sheriff's Department has announced a change of plans for former Waitsburg resident Jason Lujan, a level-three sex offender. In October, detective Cristal Harris reported that Lujan would be released from police custody in November and would be returning to live in Waitsburg. The sher- iff's department organized a community meeting in Waitsburg last month to educate residents about sex offender notifications. However, Lujan's release was put off because of an order for protection placed upon him. Harris said...

  • Dayton Schools To Seek $250,000 Levy

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

DAYTON - Dayton school officials will ask voters to approve a one-year, $250,000 maintenance and operations levy in February. Community response during a public workshop on the levy two weeks ago was mostly supportive, Superintendent Doug Johnson told the school board last Wednesday. Members of the board agreed. "What I heard from people was just that we be as specific as we can about how we're going to spend the money," said board member Marchand Hovrud. Her concern was that the proposed levy not hurt community members already under financial...

  • Lady Bulldogs Find More Heartache In Pomeroya

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 16, 2010

POMEROY - The Lady Bulldogs lost to the Pomeroy Pirates in a pre-season game in Pomeroy Tuesday evening, their fourth pre-season loss. The final score was 58-34. What started as a "really good game," according to head coach Scott Hudson, turned gloomy when the Pirates slammed an extra 11 points in the last two minutes of the first half. "The girls literally had meltdown," Hudson said. "And they just could not recover from it. We came out extremely flat in the second half." Before the half, Dayton was just six points behind. In the third quart...

  • Hit & Run ‘Shocks’ Disabled Woman

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 16, 2010

PRESCOTT - Authorities are on the lookout for an SUV involved in a two-vehicle hit and run accident in Prescott at around noon on Friday. Prescott resident Ruth Clarke, 51, was driving her early '80s model, orange Ford Bronco to Sandy's Market on Highway 124 in downtown Prescott. She was about to make the turn onto C Street, the same route she always takes to access Sandy's parking lot, when a blonde woman, possibly in her 30s and wearing glasses, made a left turn onto Highway 124 off C Street and smashed her bright yellow Ford Excursion ri...

  • Lady Bulldogs Break Down Against Panthers

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 9, 2010

KENNEWICK - Lady Bulldogs coach Scott Hudson called Tuesday night's pre-season game in Kennewick, a "Tale of Two Halves." The score at halftime was 26-25, with the Riverview Panthers just one point ahead of the Dayton girls. But Bulldog Courtney Mings suffered head injury in the first quarter, and the remaining seven varsity players quickly grew exhausted. Dayton scored just seven more points in the second half to Riverview's 40, ending the game 66-32 with the Panthers in the lead. "I thin...

KENNEWICK - The Dayton boys lost in their pre-season match against 1A-school Riverview on Tuesday evening, but not by much. The final score was 45-40. "It was good competition," Bulldogs head coach Roy Ramirez said Tuesday night. "They (the Panthers) are a step up to a whole different league, and that's what we wanted for pre-season." The Bulldogs started slow and played poorly in the first half, Ramirez said. They were down 11 points at the break. "We just couldn't get anything to fall, and...

The Columbia County Coalition for Youth and Families is looking in the next three months to apply for a Drug-Free Community Grant, which could bring $1.25 million into the Touchet Valley for programs aimed at preventing substance abuse among youth. "We're looking at about 400 hours investing in ap...

  • Dayton School Levy Decision Next Week

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 9, 2010

DAYTON - Officials have less than a week to decide whether voters in the Dayton School District will pass judgment in February on a new school levy. With expenses rising and revenue disappearing at an alarming rate, Superintendent Doug Johnson and the five-member school board are sweating it. "The first question people are going to ask is, 'What are we going to spend the money on?'" Johnson said during a public presentation at the school last week. "The problem is, I don't know. I just know we're going to need it." With cuts proposed at the s...

  • Barrel Racers Win Prizes

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 2, 2010

WALLA WALLA - Barrel racing may be for the ladies, but it's not a powder-puff sport. The event combines a horse's athletic ability with the horsemanship skills of a rider to quickly, safely and successfully maneuver through a clover-leaf pattern around three barrels placed in a triangle in the center of an arena. It's also not entirely for women. Boys sometimes race in the youth divisions, and men have been known to compete in amateur races, said Waitsburg resident Rosie Gallaher. Gallaher, n...

  • 2010 Dayton Christmas Kickoff:

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 2, 2010

DAYTON - Last week's arctic-like weather kicked off an early winter in the valley, but it didn't do much to help downtown Dayton merchants with their annual Christmas Kickoff festivities. "Shopping was down significantly from last year, and the number of people was down," said Lisa Ronnberg, executive director of the Dayton Chamber of Commerce. "Overall we had a beautiful setting with the snow, but the weather in the region was not favorable to us." Mindy Betzler's "cookie-ometer" confirmed...

This week's early snow indicates the beginning of a cold season that could be a great year for Ski Bluewood but disastrous for a Touchet Valley vulnerable to flooding from the Touchet and Coppei rivers. Almost a foot of snow fell earlier this week in Walla Walla and Columbia counties, thwarting drivers, closing...

Attendees were presented with a mock flood disaster of catastrophic proportions to work through. The...

  • New Year For Bigger, Stronger Bulldogs

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Nov 25, 2010

DAYTON - Ask Dayton junior Garett Turner what he's looking forward to most this basketball season and you'll get a typically short and to-the-point Turner reply: "Success." Turner is one of 11 boys on Dayton's varsity squad this year, a group of young men who have, with little exception, been playing ball together since grade school, according to senior Dain Henderson. "I think we're going to have a good season," Henderson said. "We're expected to have a good season, so hopefully we'll be ab...

  • Small Is Beautiful

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Nov 25, 2010

DAYTON - The Lady Bulldogs, many riding high on enthusiasm from their success on the volleyball court this fall, are uneasy going into this basketball season. "We're not a real solid varsity this year," said Shelby Smith, a junior and the tallest girl, at 5-foot-eight, on the squad. "We're going to have to work hard and play bigger than we are." But head coach Scott Hudson has faith in the girls. "We're young, and we're not real tall," he said. "But we certainly have quickness, we have people wh...

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Nov 4, 2010

In the heated races for county prosecutor and county sheriff, only the bid for sheriff produced definitive results by Election Night. Incumbent Walt Hessler, with 63.57 percent of votes, defeated Mark Franklin by 562 votes, a victory that cannot be denied. Waiting inside the Columbia County...
