  • DW drops non-league game to Liberty Christian 38-16

    Eric Umphrey|Oct 3, 2019

#54 Theo Anderson scored the first points for the Dayton-Waitsburg defense this year with his blocked punt for a safety to close out the scoring giving DW the lead at 8-6 in the 1st quarter. Unfortunately, Liberty Christian would take control in the 2nd quarter scoring eighteen unanswered points giving them a 24-8 lead at halftime that they would not relinquish. Head coach Troy Larsen had this to say, "we lost 16-38 in a non-conference game to Liberty Christian. The game started out good with both teams trading touchdowns. On our second drive...

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Sep 26, 2019

Prescott – Tuesday September 17th Prescott High School played Irrigon High School in their first home soccer match of the year. Jaime Escalante scored the first goal of the game to give the Tigers the lead. The next three goals of the half were all scored by Tiger Jayson Castillo. Three consecutive goals by a player is sometimes called a natural hat trick. Jayson would go on to score two more in the 2nd half for a total of five on the game. Five goals in soccer has a special name, it's called a...

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Sep 19, 2019

Dayton-The DW Cardinals hosted the McCall-Donnelly Vandals Friday September 13th in a non conference matchup. Initially this game wasn't supposed to be on the schedule but McCall-Donnelly had a late cancellation. Head coach Troy Larsen was happy to get another home game on the schedule even against an opponent other area teams weren't willing to play. DW would lose by a score of 68-0 but that doesn't tell the whole story. The Vandals are a division 2A team from Idaho currently ranked 4th in the...

  • A Brief History of Start-up Pro Football Leagues Part Two:

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Sep 12, 2019

United States Football League (1983-1985) David Dixon a New Orleans antiques dealer came up with a plan for a spring and summer football league. Attempting to repeat past failures of other leagues the plan called for a salary cap, strict vetting for owners including posting $1.3 million lines of credit for emergencies, and requirements that each team would play in an NFL sized stadium. Unfortunately, the owners didn’t follow the Dixon Plan. They exceeded the $1.8 million salary cap, had problems securing large enough stadiums and once again d...

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Sep 12, 2019

WAITSBURG – DW had difficulty moving the ball on offense. Columbia-Burbank held DW's running game in check for most of the game and when DW's defense made stops they took over deep in their own territory. DW's defense looked good throughout the game but especially in the 2nd half when they didn't allow any points. All second half points were safeties on DW's offense. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total CB 8 13 2 2 25 DW 0 0 0 0 0 Highlights #17 Shawn Evans with a nice backfield tackle for a loss in the 1st q...

Most don’t last more than a few seasons. Several have generated great players that made it to the NFL. One contributed three new teams that joined the NFL. The most successful league still exists today in the NFL as the American Football Conference. Here is Part One of a summary of the leagues that have tried to compete or coexist with the NFL and what happened to...

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Aug 29, 2019

High School football is right around the corner with the first game scheduled for Fri., Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. in Waitsburg versus Columbia-Burbank. Practices are up and running Monday thru Friday. Troy Larsen, in his fifth year as head coach, was smiling when he told me there are over forty kids turning out including fifteen freshmen. Last year, the team only had around twenty-two players, total. This years' team also has nine returning lettermen. If you're a football fan, then rule changes should...

  • High schools are forming ESports leagues

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Aug 22, 2019

Electronic sports or ESports are played either on traditional video game consoles or personal computers. You may have recently heard of sixteen-year-old Kyle Giersdorf who won $3 million dollars playing in a Fortnite World Cup. ESports have become a billion-dollar industry in a very short period of time. As of 2019 over 115 colleges and universities are now offering some sort of ESports scholarship program. Compare that to just five years ago when there was only one program – Robert Morris U...

  • Mariners Post Trade Deadline News

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Aug 15, 2019

Tim Beckham recently tested positive for Stanozolol, which is an anabolic steroid. This is his first suspension, so the penalty is 80 games. Since there are fewer than eighty games left in the season he will have to serve the suspension for the remainder of this season and the first 32 games next season. Beckham will be arbitration eligible next season. This is the second season in a row the Mariners have had a suspended player. Robinson Cano was suspended last season for 80 games. Tim made the...

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jul 25, 2019

Times sports writer, Eric Umphrey and his brother Howard, attended the last weekend's induction ceremonies. This week, Eric shares his experience watching as former Mariner Edgar Martinez was inducted into the club of baseball elites. Edgar Martinez' Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony From the editor: It's not every day that a Times staff writer gets to attend...

  • Which Mariners are likely to be traded before July 31?

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jul 18, 2019

With the All-Star break behind us and the trade deadline just a couple weeks away, which Mariners are most likely to be traded? Most fans would like to see Félix Hernández or Kyle Seager moved but both have high salaries, have dealt with injuries this season and have produced well below expectations. These two aren't going anywhere. The Mariners do have a couple of players left that have had good seasons, low salaries and are currently healthy. Domingo Santana's outfield defense is the one blemi...

  • How are recently-traded Mariners doing?

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jul 11, 2019

Since we are at the All-Star break, it's a good time to take a look at some of the players the Mariners traded away this year. Fans are usually very critical of trading away their favorite players and are often surprised to learn how things are going with their new team. Let's start with Robinson Cano. Cano is having his worst season thus far in his major league career. His triple slash line of .240/.287/.360 (batting average/on-base percentage/slugging) are all career lows. With only four home...

  • Daniel Vogelbach is Mariners All Star representative

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jul 4, 2019

Daniel Vogelbach will be going to the baseball All Star Game for the Mariners this year. He was picked up in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on July 20, 2016 with Paul Blackburn for Jordan Pries and Mike Montgomery. This turned out to be a great trade for the Mariners as Pries never made it out of the minors and stopped pitching after the 2016 season. Montgomery currently has an ERA of 6.08 with the Cubs this year. I think it is safe to say the Mariners won a trade! Vogelbach is currently hitting...

  • A look at some Mariner prospects close to the majors

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jun 27, 2019

Since the season has gone off the rails and more trades are likely on the way, I thought it would be a good time to look at some prospects that are close to major league ready in the farm system. Justin Dunn, an AA pitcher at Arkansas, has a 5-3 record with a 3.46 ERA in 13 starts. He is averaging 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings at double AA while his walks are down to 2.8 per nine innings. Justin was part of last year's trade with the Mets and he could move up the system quickly. Evan White,...

  • Edwin Encarnación traded to Yankees for Juan Then

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jun 20, 2019

Another Mariner player was traded over the weekend. This time it was the current American League home run leader Edwin Encarnación. He was sent to the New York Yankees for minor league pitcher Juan Then. If that name sounds familiar it is because the Mariners originally drafted Juan and traded him in November of 2017 for Yankees AAA relief pitcher Nick Rumbelow. Juan, now 19 years old, has yet to pitch this season as the rookie ball league he was assigned to hasn't started yet. Apparently, his...

  • Mariners criticized over pitcher-heavy early draft

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jun 13, 2019

The Mariners took pitchers in nine of their first 11 picks in this past weeks baseball player’s draft. Overall, out of their 41 picks they took 23 pitchers. That works out to 56% of all picks in this year’s draft. The average team takes about 54% pitchers to 46% position players. If you were listening to the local sports station you may have heard them criticize taking so many pitchers so early in the draft. With the Mariners pitching staff currently giving up over six runs per game, pitching is definitely a need. Pitchers drafted, make the...

  • What to expect from the Mariners the rest of the way

    Eric Umphrey, THE TIMES|Jun 6, 2019

SEATTLE—It was fun while it lasted. After getting off to a 13-2 start to the season, the Seattle Mariners have hit a wall. They are now in last place in the American League West division after finishing May with a 7-21 record. The offense continues to hit home runs and average five runs per game. However, the pitching staff is giving up six runs per game. The starting pitching ranks 24th out of 30 teams and the bullpen ranks 28th. Expect a lot of trades from now until the July 31st trade d...
