  • Neylan Bryan Homers Twice as DW Sweeps Lyle-Wishram

    Eric Umphrey, THE TIMES|May 2, 2019

DAYTON-The DW softball team continued its great play on the season, scoring early and often against Lyle-Wishram on April 25. After giving up a run in the top of the first, DW batted around three times in the bottom of the first. With two outs and already ten runs in they would go through a stretch of ten consecutive batters reaching base and scoring runs, making the lead 20-1. At this point the DW coaching staff had a runner intentionally leave early out of sportsmanship to end the inning. The...

  • DW tracksters fought the elements at April 27 Udeberg Invitational

    Eric Umphrey, THE TIMES|May 2, 2019

RITZVILLE—The DW track and field team traveled to Lind-Rtizville High School for the Udeberg Invitational on April 27, where high winds and hail made for a tough day on the field. “Weather had a huge impact with winds averaging 20-25 mph, gusts up to 40, and hail. Our athletes put forth one hundred percent and were competitive in their events. We had two athletes consistently in the top 10 of their events, Kirsten Miller and Mason Finney. Overall, we are very happy with the performance of the team; they represented our community very well, sai...

WALLA WALLA-Four area players from the golf team were invited Wednesday April 24th to the Wine Valley Invitational. Ashton Phinney and McKellyn Bradham represented DW while Evan Harvill and Will Neylon represented Columbia Burbank. "Ashton played well but ended up taking too many putts. McKellyn blew up on the front nine but finally relaxed and played probably his best nine holes on the back. Will found some trouble in the sand on the first two holes which hurt his score on an otherwise solid ro...

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Apr 25, 2019

WAITSBURG- On Sat. April 20, the DW baseball team played a doubleheader against Kittitas. In game one, the boys dropped the opener 16-5. Due to a bad inning this game was put out of reach early. In game two, the boys got out an early 8-0 lead but Kittitas kept chipping away at the lead until finally going ahead for good in the fifth inning and then taking more runs in the sixth and seventh to end the game 17-10. For DW the big hit of the day belonged to Keon Lindly who launched a bases-loaded...

  • DW duffers enjoy MF course

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Apr 25, 2019

MILTON-FREEWATER-On April 16, the DW golf team traveled to Milton-Freewater where they played 18 holes on the city course. "This was a fun match for our kids; it's the first time they were able to play the back 9 at Milton-Freewater. All of our boys hit at least one out-of-bounds on number 17, so scores were a bit inflated. This is a difficult hole in that the tee is 112 feet above the green, which is surrounded by trouble on all sides. One of the highlights of the day was first-year golfer Tom...

  • Evan Harvill ties for 1st at Columbia Point

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Apr 25, 2019

RICHLAND—“Today was a beautiful day for golf but the conditions wore on the kids. It was 85 degrees in Richland. Columbia Point has lots of rolling hills and is over 6000 yards long. It’s been difficult this spring to prepare for that!” said DW Golf Coach Mike McGhan about the Thurs. April 18 golf match at Richland’s Columbia Point Golf Course. “McKellyn (Bradham) was battling a minor injury so every swing was painful. He still posted a respectable score. Eli (Talbott) has been striking the ball very well lately; he just needs to continue wh...

    Eric Umphrey, THE TIMES|Apr 18, 2019

PASCO – The first 18-hole par 72 course of the year proved to be challenging for the players on DW's golf team. Casey Brooks and Tom Elder participated in their first high school golf matches this past Thursday on April 11 at Sun Willows, in Pasco. The day, however, belonged to Evan Harvill of Burbank who shot a two over 74. He finished the day first overall by six strokes with one eagle and three birdies. • To rebuild or not to rebuild, the Russell Wilson Dilemma

    Eric Umphrey, THE TIMES|Apr 18, 2019

Russell Wilson and his agent have given the Seahawks an April 15 deadline to get a multiple-year extension done. If the date passes without one, he claims he will not sign another with Seattle. The next move would be either a trade (presumably for multiple draft picks) or giving Russell the franchise tag for one to two years, keeping him in Seattle. The side you are on really depends on how you see the current Seahawks team. Are they still a playoff team that just needs to replace a few older, injury-prone players? Or has this core run its...

The hot start has been punctuated with a record number of home runs (27) through the first eleven games. Looking at the American League leaderboard will help you become familiar with some of the new players the Mariners picked up in the offseason. Tim Beckham and Domingo Santana are all over the hitting leaderboards. Jay Bruce may...

  • DW Softball Wins Doubleheader against Mabton, 10-0, 23-13

    Eric Umphrey, THE TIMES|Apr 4, 2019

DAYTON-The DW Girls softball team played a doubleheader Sat. March 30 against Mabton and won both games. The two games, however, couldn't have been more different. In game one, Mabton left the bases loaded in the first inning and DW didn't manage to score, either. Mabton seemed to have the momentum early but left base runners stranded inning after inning. Then, in the home half of the third, the DW bats woke up to score four runs. They would add six more in the fourth to end the game 10-0....

In game one, a nine-run first inning quickly put the game out of reach for TCP who could only muster one run against pitcher Sadie Seney and the DW defense. DW offense was led by Kaleigh White who went 4-4 with a triple and a double. A great team effort as all nine batters reached base and scored in the 16-1 victory. G...

  • DW Golfers hit Wine Valley and WW Country Club Courses

    Eric Umphrey, THE TIMES|Apr 4, 2019

WALLA WALLA-The DW golf team played at Wine Valley on Wed., March 27, then at the Walla Walla Country Club on Thurs., March 28. McKellyn Bradham continued his strong play with two more top ten finishes this week. Cold wet weather and challenging greens at Wine Valley likely contributed to higher scores on Wednesday. Kiya McCaw was noticeably limping from a pre-season knee injury as she finished her round, still smiling, at Wine Valley. "Every one of our golfers have shot better scores than they...

  • Samantha Davis finishes third for DW Girls at Milton-Freewater match

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Mar 28, 2019

MILTON-FREEWATER- Coach McGhan's concern for his team was evident in the first golf match of the DW season in Milton-Freewater on March 21. With early-season matches allowing coaches more access to their players, McGhan is available to answer questions about rules or how to deal with a specific situation and made a point to check in with each of his nine players. Everyone, whether playing or watching, stands at alert with shotgun starts at every hole. For students at some schools, this was...

  • Washington and Gonzaga Tourney Times and Updates

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Mar 21, 2019

A column by Eric Umphrey #9 Washington (26-8) vs. #8 Utah State (28-6) in Columbus, Ohio, Fri. March 22 at 3:50 p.m. on TNT. Washington’s loss to Oregon in the PAC 12 tournament finals likely cost them a slightly higher seed in the tournament despite not having won against a top 20 team all season. Normally, the team with the best record coming out of the PAC 12 would be favored over any team out of the Mountain West Conference but the PAC 12 has been weak this year and Utah State had a top 2...

  • Modern Baseball Statistics

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Mar 14, 2019

This is part five in a series of articles I’m writing to introduce new statistics that baseball announcers are using in broadcasts. Weather willing, I’ll be back to covering local spring sports next week. Today’s statistic is Wins Above Replacement. WAR is by far the most popular of the newly-created statistics because it attempts, in a single number, to add up all aspects of a player’s value to his team. I’m covering this one last as I needed to first introduce Park Factor (Part One), BsR...

  • Modern Baseball Statistics (Part Four – Ultimate Zone Rating)

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Mar 7, 2019

A column by Eric Umphrey This is part four in a series of articles introducing the new statistics that baseball announcers are using in broadcasts. Today's statistic is Ultimate Zone Rating which is used to measure a players defensive skill. UZR only started being recorded in 2002 so we don't have data before then. This statistic is provided by a company called Sports Info Solutions. They actually hire people to watch every defensive play in baseball and give it a rating. It looks to pay fairly...

  • Modern Baseball Statistics

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Feb 28, 2019

This is part three of a series of articles I’m writing to introduce some of the newer statistics announcers are using in baseball broadcasts. Last time I covered BsR. This time I’m going to explain wOBA. It’s pronounced (whoa-bah) and it stands for weighted on base average. Weighted run average might have been a better description since it assigns run values to events based on the number of runs that event produced. An example might make this clearer. In 2018, the average number of runs that...

  • Modern Baseball Statistics (Part Two: Base Running)

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Feb 21, 2019

This is part two of a series of articles I’m writing to introduce some of the newer statistics announcers are using in broadcasts. Last time I covered Park Factor and how it affects hitters. This time I’m going to discuss BsR. BsR is a base running statistic created by Fangraphs. I’ll get the formula out of way and then breakdown the components. BsR = wSB + UBR + wGDP wSB stands for weighted stolen bases. It estimates the number of runs a player contributed to or took away from his team by st...

  • Several Factors influence Seattle Mariners Rebuild

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Feb 14, 2019

SEATTLE, Wash. – If you’ve been following the MLB baseball hot stove you’ve probably noticed how busy the Mariners have been. General Manager Jerry Dipoto has been having a fire sale and everything must go. Over $200 million in guaranteed salaries have already been moved. The contracts that have come back in trade are expiring either in 2019 or 2020. In 2021 the bulk of that money is going to two players: Kyle Seager and newly acquired pitcher Yusei Kikuchi. Per Cots baseball contracts here...

  • Tigers Take Wildcats 66-47 to make playoffs

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Feb 7, 2019

COLTON – The Prescott Tigers are playoff-bound following a 66-47 win against Colton here on Feb. 2. Prescott took control of this game early on with a great first half by Jose Gonzalez and Jonathan Cardenas who combined for 25 points. The game tightened in the 3rd quarter when Jon Bean cut the lead to seven at 44-51 with 4:33 left in the quarter. The score would get no closer and a big fourth quarter by Fernando Lopez put the game out of reach with a 14 point outburst. After the game, I spoke w...
