This week, the Seahawks return home to host the Rams on Thursday, October 7, at 5:20 pm. This is the first week of the season where the Thursday night game is not exclusively on the NFL network. The game will also be shown on FOX as well as Amazon Prime this week. The Rams are coming off their first loss of the season to Arizona, who is the last undefeated team at 4-0. Seattle defeated the 49ers 28-21 despite playing a very poor first half. Even though Seattle is at home, they are a slight underdog in this game. Last season, the Seahawks went 1...
Seattle is once again on the road this week. This time against a San Francisco team that lost to Green Bay last week in the game’s final seconds. The Seahawks (1-2) and 49ers (2-1) are looking up in the standings at the Rams and Cardinals, who are undefeated on the season but play each other next week. So, this is an excellent opportunity for one of these teams to improve in the division with a win. At quarterback for the 49ers is Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo played in only six games last season, missing several games with a high ankle sprain. H...
Seattle travels to Minnesota this week to play the Vikings. After dropping a very winnable game last week against the Titans, the Seahawks are last place in the NFC West as other teams in their division have won both of their games. It’s a little too early to call this a must-win game, but with games against San Francisco and Los Angeles the following two weeks, Seattle can’t afford to lose any more ground in the standings. At quarterback for Minnesota is Kirk Cousins. He is thirty-three years old and in his fourth season with the Vikings aft...
This week Seattle hosts the Tennessee Titans in their first home game of the season. The early schedule for the Seahawks looks like a typical division one school’s three-game tune-up against junior colleges. Last week, the Seahawks won 28-16 against the Indianapolis Colts. It would be hard to find anything wrong with the previous week’s performance. Solid running game. Check. Russell Wilson accurate and in control. Check. New tight end fitting in seamlessly. Check. Dominating wide receivers. Check. Improved defensive play. Check. The Tit...
With about four weeks left in the regular season, the Mariners are still within reach of a playoff spot. Although the Mariners front office claimed that this team could compete for a wild card spot at the beginning of the season, few fans likely believed them. Now the Mariners are one of five teams in the American League playing for two wildcard spots. The teams in contention are the New York Yankees (78-59), Boston Red Sox (79-61), Seattle Mariners (75-63), Toronto Blue Jays (74-62), and Oakland A’s (74-63). The Yankees currently hold a h...
Rollen Stewart was born in 1944 and grew up in Spokane, Washington. He had a difficult childhood, losing both parents before he was fifteen. As a young adult, he was interested in drag racing and owned an auto repair shop. Eventually, he sold the auto shop and became a marijuana farmer. At this time, he set himself the unrealized goal of growing the world's largest mustache. In 1977, Stewart got on camera for the first time at the NBA finals in Portland, Oregon. Hooked on being in the...
With thirty-six games left to play, the Seattle Mariners find themselves still competing for a playoff spot. Though the Mariners are unlikely to catch the Houston Astros for the division title, they are only three games behind the second wild-card spot. Ahead of them are the Oakland A’s, who Seattle is currently playing a two-game series, and the Boston Red Sox. After the short series with the A’s is over, they will have seven more games with them before the end of the season, so there is time to catch up to them in the standings. As luck wou...
The U.S. Men’s Olympic basketball team won its fourth straight gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics last week. They beat France 87-82 for the gold medal, avenging their opening game loss in pool play. Aside from Kevin Durant team USA didn’t have top NBA players on the squad as we’ve seen in the past. Hopefully, it is a reminder that basketball has become an international sport, and the NBA is filled with players from all over the world. The team for France had five active NBA players on it; fortunately for the U.S. team, none were among the top p...
SEATTLE—As expected, the Mariners made some moves during this year’s trade deadline. Most fans were probably hoping the team would attempt to pick up some players to help during this season’s playoff. Instead, they shuffled the roster around a bit without significantly improving the team. Mariner fans will have to wait for the offseason and this year’s winter meetings to add the necessary pieces to take the team to the next level. For now, the Mariners sit in third place in the American League West and are tied with the New York Yankees, three...
After dropping the opening game of the Oakland series in Seattle, the Mariners rebounded with three straight wins by one run to win the series. They also beat the Astros on Monday, coming back from an early seven-run deficit to win 11-8. This stretch has moved them up to one game behind the A’s for second place in the division and one game out of the second wild-card spot. With the trade deadline coming up on July 30th at 4 p.m., it’s surprising the Mariners haven’t been more active trying to improve the team for this year and beyond. The T...
The Seattle Mariners are currently in third place in the American League West behind the Houston Astros and Oakland A’s at 50-44 on the season. They are also just three games out of the second wildcard spot. With forty games left against AL West opponents, they certainly have an opportunity to move up in the standings. Outside of Mitch Haniger offensively, they haven’t been that impressive, and as a team, they are hitting just .219/.295/.380. The offensive scores an average of 4.13 runs per game which ranks 22 in the league out of thirty tea...
The NCAA hasn’t had a good year. First, they lost a Supreme Court ruling; then, in a rush to respond to the name, image, and likeness state laws some states had passed, the NCAA quickly pushed out their interim (NIL) policy across the league. Now a new league has formed targeting the very best high school basketball players and paying them a minimum of $100,000 a year to skip college and the NCAA altogether. The new league is called Overtime Elite and is an offshoot of the distributed sports net...
Jack Lohrke started his minor league baseball career in 1942 at age eighteen when he signed with the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League. After seven games he was sent to Twin Falls, Idaho, in the Class C Pioneer League. He hit .271 as the team's third baseman and won the team's MVP award. He wouldn't play baseball again until after returning home from World War II. The train that took him to ship off to war derailed. Three people were killed and many others were severely burned by...
We’ve all heard stories about professional athletes that have squandered millions in salary and ended up homeless. The following story is not one of those. It is about a great decision made by a major league baseball player who retired in 2001. Thanks to a good agent, high interest rates, and a leap of faith retired player, Bobby Bonilla has been getting a check for $1.19 million every July 1 from the New York Mets since 2011. He will continue receiving a check through 2035 when he is s...
In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court sided with the plaintiff Shawne Alston against the NCAA. It essentially ruled that the NCAA could not place limits on education-related benefits schools may make available to student-athletes. The ruling did not touch on whether student-athletes could be paid directly to play but hinted that the Court might rule in favor of the athletes if such cases were raised. College sports are about to go through significant changes. Supreme Court Justice...
The following is a brief interview with the Prescott School District’s Dean of Students/Athletic Director, Jeff Foertsch. We discussed summer activities, school sports schedules, Esports, and the Prescott School District App, which can be found by searching for “Prescott School District, WA” in the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Q: When did you start using the Prescott School District App? A: “We’ve had the app maybe three or four years, but in terms of athletics, it started last year. The new administration here, Justin Bradford,...
A combination of injuries and graduations have challenged the depth on the team and provided an early look into what the team may look like next year. As a result, the DW Girls basketball team dropped their last three games to Mabton, WWVA and Columbia. DAYTON-The game started out with the boys taking advantage of four Walla Walla Valley Academy turnovers in the first quarter to take the early lead in the game. From that point until halftime, it was all WWVA. Wyatt Costello's only shot in the second quarter accounted for all of DW's points in the second quarter as DW went 1-12 from the field and also missed a couple of free throws. WWVA kept swapping out players every few minutes from their bench like a hockey team and built a 29-10 halftime le...
On May 26, 2021, I had a chance to interview Cody Miller, the general manager of the Walla Walla Sweets Baseball team. In three years, this WSU graduate from Twinsburg Ohio, rose through the ranks to become general manager of this professionally managed club in the West Coast League. After a challenging year for all sports, I wanted to check in with this hometown team. What is seating going to look like with COVID-19 protocols? "So, seating right now is under current guidelines from the state...
DAYTON-The DW girls basketball team opened their season with a 50-46 overtime win against Walla Walla Valley Academy. Since then, they have dropped consecutive games against Mabton 67-38 and Riverview 56-45. They are better against the press this year, and the combination of sophomore Claudia Benavides and Senior Sadie Seney look to lead the team in scoring; if you watched them in their last season, that probably comes as no surprise. What came as a surprise was seeing 8th grader, Adisyn...
DAYTON-With the first week of play complete, the DW boys basketball team started with a 2-1 record on the season with wins on the road over Walla Walla Valley Academy 42-27 and Riverview 54-44. The only loss of the season so far came at home in Dayton against Mabton 33-29. The boys took an early lead in the Mabton game thanks to Mason Finney, who hit a three-pointer to open the scoring. They would lead in this one until the fourth quarter, still stuck at twenty-two points until five minutes to...
Seattle began the week by dropping both games in the Dodgers series and losing the first game of the Cleveland series. This put their losing streak at five games and made it their longest of the season. The first game in Los Angeles was particularly disappointing as the Mariners led 4-3 going into the eight-inning only to lose the game when Gavin Lux hit a three-run home run. It was Lux’s first home run of the season. Rafael Montero, the Mariners closer, got the loss in the game for giving up the home run. He also recorded his fifth blown s...
The Mariners (18-17) continue to be tied with the Houston Astros for second place in the American League West. It was a disappointing week in which they lost two out of three games to both the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers. In the Orioles series, they were no-hit by Orioles’ ace John Means who improved to 4-0 on the season with a 1.37 ERA. The best game of the week had to be the 5-2 win over the Orioles, where Justin Dunn gave up only one run in 5 1/3 innings. Kyle Lewis and Kyle Seager both homered for Seattle. The Mariners bullpen c...
If the Oakland A’s hadn’t put together a thirteen-game winning streak, the Mariners would still be first place in the AL West. The Mariners are only two games behind the A’s in the standings and would have been only a game back if not for a bad eighth inning against the Orioles on Monday, a game they were leading 1-0. It was a bullpen game in which the Mariners used seven different pitchers. Injuries to starting pitchers Marco Gonzales and Nick Margevicius have the team scrambling a bit to get another pitcher stretched out enough to start games...
Monday, Governor Jay Inslee signed into law House Bill 1356, a ban on public schools in Washington State from “..the inappropriate use of Native American names, symbols, or images as public school mascots, logos, or team names.” The new law will take effect on January 1, 2022. In the statehouse, the vote was 90 to 8, and it passed the state senate 40 to 9. Since the statehouse is currently made up of 57 democrats and 41 Republicans, and the state senate is made up of 28 Democrats, 20 Republicans, and one Democrat that caucuses with the Rep...
