  • Field Gets Tougher For Tour

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Apr 14, 2011

SEATTLE - There's little question in Daniel Farinha's mind that the Tour of Walla Walla, which could arguably be called the Tour of Waitsburg for the bulk of the races held here, is gaining in stature across the country. "I had heard about it before," said the 18-year-old racer, whose own reputation as a national competitor is growing. "I think there are some pretty good riders coming up. I'm looking forward to the race." The tour is returning to Waitsburg this weekend, and residents should expec... Full story

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Apr 14, 2011

WAITSBURG - Give Bart Baxter and Tiffany Laposi a few months to work on the Whetstone Pub building and you'll be able to dine with James Dean. By summer, he may well be giving you his cool gaze from the wall of the couple's planned new 1950s style restaurant that will be called "Betty's Diner." Baxter, a local contractor and soccer coach, and Laposi, a real estate appraiser for Walla Walla County, signed a three-year lease this weekend for the building on Preston Avenue that has been quiet since...

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Apr 7, 2011

WAITSBURG - There may not be any state-sanctioned horse racing in the Touchet Valley this year, but keep the last two weekends in May clear on your calendar to be in Waitsburg and Dayton because lots of events are in store for those dates. On the traditional Days of Real Sport weekend of May 21, Waitsburg will host its Saturday Main Street parade, have a farmers market at Preston Park throughout most of the day, stage afternoon activities around town and close the day with a livemusic street dance at the end of Main Street. • What’s The Point?

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Apr 7, 2011

MILTON-FREEWATER - Not to put too fine a point on the problem, but when it comes to throwing the javelin, Washington and Oregon have different safety rules. In Washington, javelins are blunted and equipped with a rubber tip. In Oregon, athletes are still allowed to use the solid steel-tipped spears that have been banned in Washington since 1989. WP athlete Kayla Huxoll found this out the hard way during the Carnival of Speed at Mac- Hi on Friday in a rare accident that has infuriated her...

  • Farmers Take No Chances With Rust

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 31, 2011

WAITSBURG - After struggling to control rust in their wheat fields last spring, Touchet Valley farmers aren't taking any chances this year. Most, if not all, wheat growers in Prescott, Waitsburg and Dayton are mixing a fungicide like TILT or QUILT in with the herbicide they normally spray mostly through ground applications. "I don't know of anyone who isn't," said Matt Weber, a certified crop advisor with the McGregor Company in Waitsburg. "After the horror stories last year, they're not taking any chances." Last year, farmers in the Touchet...

  • Lady Tigers Win 2 Over Asotin, Lose 1 To W-M

    Tracy Daniel & Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 31, 2011

PRESCOTT- After beating the Asotin Panthers in a doubleheader this weekend, the Lady Tigers faced mud, rain and the Weston- McEwen Tigerscots in a non-league game Tuesday afternoon. Everyone battled slick bases and mud-filled shoes before the game was called in the top of the fifth due to weather. The Tigers were behind 8-4, but the teams did not finish their required five innings so the winner is undetermined. "They're a tough team," head coach Angie Potts said. "They were a state-ranked team...

  • WP: Win 1, Lose 2

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 31, 2011

PRESCOTT - After Saturday's doubleheader loss against Asotin, the Tigers were all too happy chalking up a 6-4 win Monday against Weston-McEwen. WP scored two runs in the first inning, two in the third and two in the sixth. Even though the Tigerscots responded with a rally in the fourth, they could not overcome the Tigers' twopoint lead in the top of the seventh. As a result, WP improved its record to 4-2 overall with Monday's non-league win, which helped the Tigers put their weekend loss behind... Full story

  • Youth Group Goes Main Street

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 31, 2011

WAITSBURG - Leroy Cunningham explains the meaning of the sign that appeared last week in the empty store front window of the former "Nothing New Antiques" on Waitsburg's Main Street. The waves that curl into one another like the yin and yang from traditional Chinese philosophy represent his nonprofit organization's goal of sustainability: being in balance with nature and the environment. Then, he explains why the sign is there. "It's all about local food production," he said about his plans for...

  • Sheriff Doing More With Less

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 31, 2011

WAITSBURG - Sheriff John Turner doesn't know whether to laugh or cry. The Walla Walla County's new, top law-enforcement offi cial is thrilled he can make adjustments to the patrol schedule that provide 24/7 coverage in his jurisdiction. He's pleased some members of his new team bring many years of law enforcement experience they can use to offer in-house training to his deputies. He's also happy to see that the new administration, sworn in earlier this year, has created a better work...

  • A Blend For Main Street

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 31, 2011

On one of the first sunny mornings of spring, I took the bag Thomas Reese gave me the day before and looked inside. There they were: beans from three different continents, some dark tan, some dark brown, some with a flat coat and some with an oily sheen. I stuck my nose in the bag and inhaled without hesitation . A deep, toasted fragrance filled my nostrils. Few things in life smell like coffee. This was going to be good. After weeks of cupping single-origin beans and blends from various parts o... Full story

  • CSAs: Fresh And Local

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 31, 2011

DAYTON - While the wind and early spring rains still descend on the Touchet Valley more than the rays of the sun, Erin Horan is already busy planting this year's garden at the Monteillet dairy farm. The heartier items - peas, radishes, Lima beans, fava beans, spinach and potatoes - are in the ground, with beats and carrots soon to follow. It's one of the lessons the manager of the Monteillet farm's CSA (communitysupported agriculture) has learned from last year, when she first planted the... Full story

  • Fair Kicks Off Amid Worries

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 31, 2011

DAYTON - Amidst the excitement of announcing the court and program for the Columbia County Fair this weekend was the anxiety country fairs across the state share these days: funding from Olympia. With horse racing already nixed this year for Dayton Days, fair organizers fear another blow to a local cultural tradition if lawmakers cut $2 million in state subsidies for fairs across Washington and, of this, $31,000, or almost half the budget, for the Columbia County Fair. "With the loss of the fund... Full story

  • From The Drug Front: Meth Is Back

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 24, 2011

DAYTON - During the past several years, all has been relatively quiet on the meth front. But in recent months, it appears that local production and consumption of the drug are back on the rise, according to law enforcement officials in Walla Walla and Columbia counties. "It's coming back," said Columbia County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Jenkins, who functions as narcotics specialist for the county and is part of a task force for Columbia, Walla Walla and Garfield counties. "We're all concerned about...

  • Off To A Running Start

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 24, 2011

YAKIMA - At the first track meet of the season, athletes are usually a bit rusty and performances are rarely what they were at the end of the previous year's season. WP competitors are no exception, but much to head coach Jeff Bartlow's delight, this year's Cardinals performed very close to their peak last year and some even exceeded it at the Papa Wells Invitational in Yakima. " Overall, I'm pretty pleased," he said. "I really felt good about it." Ronnie Hulce placed first with a high jump of 4' 10," which is only slightly below her...

    Story & Photos Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 24, 2011

DAYTON - The mellow, late-winter sun cuts in low across the Bulldogs track field as various athletes practice their specialties. Courtney Fuller is taking another run at the hurdles. Davy Phillips and Ammar Alkohlani are trying their javelin reach. Samura Miller and Briana Fulbright get in position to take straddle jumps at the high bar. They laugh as minor things go wrong. After all, this is one of their first practices, and the students are still finding their groove in their new or revived...

  • Warrant Out For Hermanns

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 24, 2011

WAITSBURG - A Walla Walla judge has issued a warrant for the arrest of Adam Hermanns, who is charged with the theft of automotive components and a fire arm. "We are actively seeking Mr. Hermanns," said Eddie Freyer, Undersheriff for Walla Walla County. "Any calls and tips related to his whereabouts will be pursued vigorously." In addition, the sheriff's office is interested in talking to Hermanns about the Jan. 25, 2011, garage fire at the residence of his parents, Pam and Andy Hermanns. That...

  • Introducing “Fridays At The Park”

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 17, 2011

WAITSBURG - Remember what Preston Park looked like during Cycle Oregon? There were vendors selling everything from veggies to T-shirts. There was a beer garden and live music. There were cyclers getting their picture taken with Izzy the camel. It was a fun, festive sight that made you want to stop and pull over on your way through town on Highway 12 or 124. Now a small group of local organizers wants to create such an attraction at the park every Friday evening and may get some help from the city for its goal to create a permanent seasonal farm...

  • 2011 WP Track & Field

Stories & Photos Imbert Matthee, By Imbert Matthee|Mar 17, 2011

WAITSBURG - Track and field may not be a team sport, but the Waitsburg Prescott Cardinals do have a team goal for the season: hang on to their status as district champions, which they've held six of the last seven years. New head coach Jeff Bartlow said that from what he has seen of the 2011 team after nine practices, he believes the Cardinals can do it. "I think we can defend our title," Bartlow said this weekend, as he was putting the finishing touches on this year's roster of athletes. "The t... Full story

  • Force Of Nature

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 17, 2011

WAITS- BURG - Bette Burgoyne's idea of doing a drawing 11 inches wide and 10 feet long had several sources of inspiration. There was M.C. Escher's "Metamorphosis," the mindbending left-to-right journey of a crossword like text that changes into blocks, lizards, a beehive, fish, a flock of birds, a mountain town, a chess game and finally back to a text. There were the Chinese landscape paintings that unroll from top to bottom and are so long they could only be displayed in a very high stairwell....

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 10, 2011

WAITSBURG - For the second year in a row, Waitsburg residents will have a choice of mayoral candidates in their annual elections for city government next month. Waitsburg carpenter, soccer coach and former council member Bart Baxter told the Times earlier this week he is running for the position now held by first-term Mayor Walt Gobel. During a caucus meeting at Deanne and Larry Johnson's house on Monday night, Gobel and all current city council members were nominated again as "Truth & Trust"...

  • WP Men Face Grizzlies In Final 8

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Mar 3, 2011

SPOKANE - In their playoff game against the Brewster Bears Friday, the Cardinals showed it once again. They have a number of strategies to get their buckets. The men have tireless rebounding from the likes of Matt Hamilton, Kris Cady and Guillermo Hern andez. They have fast breaks and la- yups from Dustin Wooderchak and T.J. Hofer. They have treys from Wooderchak, Hofer and now Tyler Baxter. They have everything in Zach Bartlow's bag of tricks - long distance, fast breaks and rebounds. Now they... Full story
