WAITSBURG - We went to the Tri City Football camp again and have done that this camp six out of the last seven years. It was very positive. As usual, we were missing some kids, but we gave out almost 40 sets of pads and most of those kids did the practices and 31 did the football camp. One day was spent at the University of Idaho and their team camp. We went to Idaho on Tuesday and got some work in with their coaches. It was positive. We played McCall and Pullman in scrimmages there. Chance...
WP Head Football Coach Wants To Revive Youth Football For His Team's Future W AITSBURG -- Our youth football program has taken a hit these past two years and this concerns me in a great way. The Waitsburg Giants had two programs (Little Giants and Giants) has had a great tradition over the years. When I first arrived in the fall of 1999 this program was on solid ground. Danny Cole and Dick Largent had the older Giants team on a roll year after year, and if I remember right, they coached a full 10 years together. It was a passion they shared...
WAITSBURG -- The key to any big season is defense. You may have heard that offense wins over the crowd, but defense wins championships. Regardless of the sport, championships are won with great individual and team efforts on defense. And, that was the case this past year. I have team statistics for all my 13 seasons, starting in 1999, and this past season we stopped the run very well, giving up only 108 yards per game. Only the 2009 run defense that gave up 100.3 yards was better. Our total team defense (215.8 ypg) was also second ov...
WAITSBURG -- Offensively speaking, the 2011 Cardinals were hard to beat and we were at the top of our game a year ago. In my 13 years as head coach, we had our no. 1 scoring offense (41.1 per game) and no. 4 total offense (385.5 yards per game). It was our no. 2 passing offense (171.5 per game) and no. 4 rush- ing offense (214 yards per game). In addition to that, we did not turn the ball over with a (+16) turnover margin (only 2010 was better at +20). Mistake-free foot- ball and talented kids with some creative coaching all added up to a 14-0...
WAITSBURG -- The 2012 schedule is arguably the hardest schedule we have had in recent years. Our senior football players total 15 guys, maybe more, and we will need all of those seniors if we expect to make another run deep into the playoffs. We have 15 seniors for sure and depending on Jubilee Youth Ranch's participation, we could have up to 17 or 18 seniors. This has to be one of the largest senior classes we have ever had at Waitsburg. Oddly enough, with the number of players that we have lost over the last two years, only four of those...
WAITSBURG -- Any- time you win a state championship, there is a big target on your back. The success of our team one year ago allows other teams a huge incentive to be able to play and defeat the state champs. Coming off this huge year with a 14-game winning streak and state championship, we will have our work cut out for us. Our league is arguably the best in the state and it will be no different this year. DeSales lost only five seniors and Tri- City Prep only two. Both look to be a huge challenge to us this fall. And TOR will be the best...
WP Head Football Coach Jeff Bartlow Believes Last Season's Freshmen Will Step Up On The Field This Fall W AITSBURG -- The 2011 run in football last fall was a great run and one the communities of Waitsburg and Prescott, as well as Jubilee Christian, will remember for a long time to come. In fact, the last three years are really remarkable going, 35-3, over that span. Numerous school records, both team and individual, were broken. And, when you graduate 12 seniors in 2010 and then eight more in 2011 and win that many games (26-1 over those two...
Acevedo, Leroue Injured At Summer Camp, WP Goes 3-1-1 In Competitions WAITSBURG - The WP football team attended Central Washington University Football Camp June 16 and 17 in Cheney. Football Camp was a shorter affair this year because the coaching staff had to leave early to coach at the All-State game in Yakima. The team had a number of kids who could not par- ticipate at camp for various reasons, which happens on occasion when it is an over- night trip like this year. The past five years WP went to the Tri City camp and trav- eled back and...
ADNA - The Waitsburg- Prescott baseball team split its regional tournament in Adna on Saturday, winning a battle of pitching against the Concrete Lions, 3-1, and falling to Toutle Lake Fighting Ducks, 4-2, after 10 innings of play. Game One WP's Zach Bartlow was again in a groove on the mound going all seven innings and spreading out five hits while striking out 10 and walking one runner. After giving up a double in the first inning, he recovered with a strikeout and the Tiger defense stepped...
YAKIMA- Waitsburg- Prescott graduate Kris Cady got the opportunity of a lifetime when he played in the Washington State Football Coaches Association East-West all star game in Yakima this weekend. The West won the game 23-14. The Earl Barden Classic was played at Zaepfel Stadium and consisted of some of the best football players in the 1A, 1B and 2A divisions in the State of Washington. The players were selected by the coaches association. The West jumped out to a 13-0 lead on a couple of...
