WAITSBURG – The WP boys' basketball team advanced to the sub-regional playoffs next week by defeating Asotin Monday in the losers' bracket of the SE 2B District 9 league tournament here, 54-51. The Panthers were eliminated. Monday's game came after the Cardinals lost a heartbreaker to Tri-Cities Prep in Saturday's first tournament round, 52-51, in overtime. Thirty-three of Asotin's 51 points Monday were the result of 11 successful shots from outside the three-point line. The Panthers sank o...
First of all, if I were coach of the Seattle Seahawks, I might very well have called for a pass on second and goal from the one, with 26 seconds left on the clock and only one timeout remaining. An incomplete pass would have stopped the clock, where a failed run would not. If the Hawks had had two timeouts left, they probably would have run the ball on that play. So the lesson to be learned is this: timeouts are precious – like coconuts on a desert island. If you waste them you might die in a...
DAYTON – The Dayton Girls basketball team won three games last week, beating Weston-McEwen, 50-26 on Tuesday, Walla Walla Valley Academy, 61-13 on Thursday and WP, 55-23, on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs finished their regular season with an 17-3 record and a second place league finish. On Saturday, Dayton will play Tri-Cities Prep in the league tournament in Waitsburg. With a win, they will have a chance to avenge two regular season losses to DeSales, if the Irish win their first-round game a...
1. According to a fan poll by the web site Reddit.com, the Seattle Seahawks are the most hated NFL team in the state of California. We’ll take that as a compliment. (The most hated team in the Pacific Northwest is the San Francisco 49ers.) 9. The Seahawks’ all-time regular season record against the 49ers is 16-15. 8. In high school, Seahawk cornerback Richard Sherman scored 1,400 on his SAT test (that’s very good). He graduated high school with a 4.2 GPA and graduated from Stanford Unive...
WAITSBURG – The Waitsburg-Prescott boys' basketball team is heating up as the season draws to a close. Their overall record is 10-6. On Friday, the Cardinals hosted Asotin and cruised to a win over the Panthers, 67-48. The high-scoring contest featured big games from Owen Lanning, who scored 18 points, and Kaimen S...
DAYTON – The Dayton girls' basketball team went on the road Friday to DeSales, and fell to the league-leading Irish, 39-35. The following night, however, the Lady 'Dogs easily defeated the Asotin Panthers at home, 44-29. Against DeSales, Dayton fell behind early and was never able to catch up. They trailed 10-4 after the first quarter and 18-12 at the half. "We just couldn't get shots to fall," said Dayton coach Clayton Strong. "It was a fun atmosphere to be in as far as the crowd goes. I t...
The City of Dayton is asking the city’s voters next month to approve a sales tax increase within the city of 0.2%. The funds will be used to help improve the city’s streets and sidewalks. If the February 10 measure is approved by at least 50% of voters, Dayton will set up a new “Transportation Benefit District” (TBD – get it?) which will collect the new funds and can use them only for transportation improvements. So the future of potential projects to improve the city’s ailing streets is...

WAITSBURG – The Waitsburg Planning Commission has rescheduled its public hearing to receive comments from the public on the proposed Whoopemup Meadows housing development in Waitsburg’s northeast corner. The hearing will be held Monday evening at 7 p.m. in the Lions Building at the Waitsburg fairgrounds. As The Times reported last month, the public hearing was originally set for December 15, but two members of the commission didn’t attend. The hearing was cancelled due to lack of a quorum. Once...
About four years ago, when I was publisher of the Blue Mountain News, I interviewed State Representative Terry Nealey as he was preparing to start the 2011 legislative session. The economy was in the dumps then, and the state government was facing a reduction of more than $1 billion in tax revenues compared to the year before, along with a huge budget deficit. Here’s what Nealey had to say about that in December 2010: “In 2007 the state had a $2 billion surplus, and the Democrats passed a bun...
DAYTON – Republicans are in a stronger position in the Washington state legislature this year, and the state's economy is stronger as well. Those are two factors that State Representative Terry Nealey, Republican from Dayton, will look forward to as he heads to Olympia this month for his sixth legislative session. The 2015 session of the Washington State legislature opens Monday. This year's regular 105-day session will last until early May. The state house and senate must agree on a two-year bu...

Dayton led 13-10 after one quarter, but were outscored 14-4 in the second, to trail 24-17 at the half. "We got a couple of bounces to go our way at some crucial times, and w...

The Cardinals struggled in the first half, falling behind 21-7 after one quarter and 36-14 at the half. Burnham scored 25 of his points in that half "We had three starters in foul trouble early," said WP coach Tavis Crittenden. "Once they sat down, we fell behind." Only eight WP varsity players suited for the game, since it took place before the end of C...
DAYTON – Patience paid off for local skiers, who enjoyed an awesome opening day at Ski Bluewood on December 26. A pre-Christmas storm dumped nearly two feet of snow at the ski area 20 miles south of here, with more falling as The Times went to press Monday. At 5 a.m. Monday, Bluewood was reporting light powder, with 29 inches of snow at the base and 40 inches at the summit. Temperatures have been in the low 20s, and are expected to fall this week. Bluewood will be open daily through January 4...
This issue of The Times marks, for me, the completion of two years as the paper’s editor and one year as its owner and publisher. For once, the new year brings no big change in my role here. It has been a great pleasure to help bring news and information to our readers in Walla Walla and Columbia Counties the past two years. (And let me not forget the many readers around the country who read The Times to keep up with what we’re doing here.) It’s a privilege to be able to provide a voice for w...
DAYTON - As 2014 winds to a close, we look back on a year that brought increased economic strength to the Touchet Valley, and some momentous voting results at the ballot box. Dayton and Columbia County again put on a great string of community events. Here we go with a look back at some major stories out of Columbia County: Columbia Pulp Moves Ahead In our Dec. 19, 2013 issue, we broke the news that a new straw pulp plant was in the works for Columbia County. It was to be built near Lyons Ferry,...

"I thought again our effort was really good," said Dayton coach Clayton Strong. "We had some lapses especially in the second quart...
POMEROY - The WP boys basketball team took a hard-earned road win in overtime here Friday, 63-60. The victory gave the 2-1 Cardinals a split in their series with Pirates, after losing at home a week earlier. In Friday's game, WP fell behind the Pirates early, trailing by four after the first quarter. They were up by one at the half. "I don't think either team led by more than six the whole game," WP Coach Tavis Crittenden said. With the score tied at 54 after regulation play, the teams battled... Full story
WAITSBURG - Infrastructure development for the first phase of Whoopemup Meadows, a new housing development in Waitsburg's northwest corner, will likely begin next year, its developers say. In an interview this week, Gene Warren, one of the principals of Warren Land Company, along with his wife, Mary, said, however, it's too early to speculate on a specific schedule for the development. "There are many unknowns at this point," Warren said. "But next year we do plan to start Phase I." The Warrens...

According to Dayton Schools Superintendent Doug Johnson, the levy funds would pay for facilities projects that would address the most critical needs at the schools. They include upgrading...
