DAYTON - A Dayton man who has been charged with first degree rape of a child appeared in court last week. According to the Columbia County Prosecutor's Office, Walter Hartwell is scheduled to go to trial April 22 and 23. Hartwell was arrested last month and charged with initiating sexual contact with an 11-year-old child. He is being held in the Columbia County jail, with bond set at $100,000. WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg Resource Center (WRC) served 196 people in January -- an amount nearly equaling 10% of Waitsburg's population. Seventy-seven families from Waitsburg and Prescott received food and new families continue to utilize the service each week. The food bank currently provides services to families in the Waitsburg and Prescott school districts. Families may visit once per month and large families may take up to 55 lbs of food per visit. KENNEWICK - A group of Waitsburg residents joined Joanna Lanning in her fourth Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge at Columbia Park in Kennewick on Saturday. MEAD - The Bluewood Alpine Race Team (BART) faced harsh conditions at the Youth Team's first competition at Mt. Spokane last weekend, but two skiers claimed one top-five and two top-ten finishes in the Giant Slalom event. Heavy, wet snow and fog made even finding the race site difficult and led to rough course conditions. DAYTON - Columbia REA has donated $50,000 to the Dayton Development Task Force as part of a local tax incen- tive program that was recently approved by the state. The money will be used in the Task Force's efforts to im- prove the economic health of downtown Dayton.
