RAINIER, Ore. - Oregon State Police reported last week that Christopher Elliot, 30, of Waitsburg, was found dead on June 23 near Clatskanie, Ore., about 18 miles from Rainier, of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Earlier in the day, police said, Elliot shot a Rainier police officer during a routine traffic stop here. WAITSBURG - Twentynine WP gridders traveled to the Tri-Cities last week for their annual five-day spring football camp, where they played the majority of their games at Hanford High School. WAITSURG - Coach Jeff Bartlow wrapped up his 15th Kids Football Camp last week, and deemed it a "huge success." Thirty-five athletes participated in what Bartlow describes as "a rich tradition and one that the kids love to be a part of." Players work on basic skills as well as teamwork and sportsmanship. WAITSBURG - As The Times was going to press this week we learned that Emry and Sandy Kleck have reached agreement to take over the lease of the Coppei Café in downtown Waitsburg. The Klecks currently operate a catering business from their home in Dayton. Allison Bond, the current operator of the café will hand it over to the Klecks on July 1. Bond has operated the café since November 2012. The café facility is leased from former Times Publisher Imbert Matthee, who owns the buildings and equipment. DAYTON - Columbia County Prosecutor Rea Culwell dropped charges earlier this month against Walter Hartwell. He has been released from the Columbia County Jail. Hartwell, 38, was arrested in February and charged with two counts of first degree rape of a child. His trial had been delayed until next month. "We no longer have cooperation of the alleged victim," Culwell told The Times. PRESCOTT - Milenko Matanovic, founder and director of the Pomegranate Center, will return to Prescott on June 19 - 22 to oversee the "build" phase of the Prescott Vacant Lot Project. The Steering Committee is hoping for a large turnout of local volunteers to join hands and bring this community vision to life. DAYTON - The Columbia County Sheriff's Office, with the help of the Walla Walla SWAT team, searched a home at 119 E. Commercial St. on Monday. PRESCOTT - WP athletes and families gathered in the Prescott High School multipurpose room for the annual Spring Sports Award Dessert. MOSCOW, Ida. - Dayton's Kaitlyn Andrews will compete in four events this weekend in the State 2B Championship Track and Field Meet in Cheney. Andrews won both the javelin and long jump events at the 2B District 9 Championships here last week. She also took second in both the 100 meters and triple jump.
