DAYTON - Dayton's girls came out on top in their first league home game of the season on Saturday, defeating Tri-Cities Prep 42-28. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Lady 'Dogs' lead jumped from five to 18 in just a few quick plays, which made head coach Clayton Strong proud. "It's a sign that we're really maturing as a team," he said. "That and also how well the girls shared the ball during the game, which they did better in this game than I've seen them do in the three years since I too...
WAITSBURG - The WP girls took their first win of the season in a pre-league nail-biter against the Mac-Hi Pioneers here by a score of 42-38 on December 17. Both teams played hard and remained neck-and-neck throughout the game. At the end of the third quarter the Pioneers were ahead with a score of 27-28. The teams were tied at 33 points early in the fourth quarter, when WP changed tactics in response to the Pioneers' outside shooting abilities. WP went man-to-man in response and took a slight l...

I only have last minute shopping to do for Christmas. And keeping my shopping as local as possible, I visited The Winehard Hotel's lobby and it's "Wall of Wine," as I call it, for a bottle of Poet's Leap off-dry Riesling. In keeping with our cold winter nights, serving a white bean chili sounds yummy. Now, to find that original blue cheese cornbread recipe I developed in the kitchen of my Haight Ashbury flat in 1967. At the time of the recipe, California was just awakening to an early Napa Valley wine scene, and several "Cooking with Wine"...
End-of-year position adjustments coming up? Most very large futures traders are holding onto extremely heavy net short-sold positions in Chicago wheat. The other major wheat contracts in Kansas City hard red winter and Minneapolis spring also reflect net short speculative po- sitions, although less ponderous than Chicago. Since this category of traders is known for rapidly shifting from one side of the ledger to the other periodically, this big bulge in net-sold positions will ultimately lead to a run to the upside for wheat prices, probably...

"A wide net catches the most Ð ish." That was 23-year old Jordan McCandless's approach to fÐinding a job. He claimed job-hunting as a 40-hour per week com- mitment after graduating from Whitworth Univer- sity in Spokane. And after countless applications and interviews, he still had no luck fÐinding a job. Jordan described his dreams of one day becom- ing a U.S. Senator, and was willing to work any sort of job or internship to get his foot in the door. He said, "My main concern is mak- ing su...
The holidays are winding down. Your living room floor is littered with shards of wrapping pa- per and crushed cellophane bows. The trash can out the back door is sixty-five percent full of cardboard; the other thirty-five consists of crumbled styrofoam and hacked-open plastic clam- shells. The new toys were fun, but after a while Junior's remote control gizmo will suffer a fatal one-vehicle collision with Cousin Ellie's leg, and that twenty-seven- in-one screwdriver ding- dong you got Uncle...
Whether an accurate reflection or not, a community is often judged based on its school system. For a relocating couple with children, the quality of the school district in which a house is located will often be as much a deciding factor in buying a home as the size of the living room. Entire websites are devoted to ranking school districts by test scores, student/teacher ratios, ethnic makeup and more. A positive accomplishment reflects well on us all. Last week, as reported on Page 1, Waitsburg Kindergarten teacher Pamela Nolan-Beasley...

Columbia REA CEO Les Teal said he felt that the tax in- centive program was an excellent way for the co-op to make a difference in Dayton. "We're part of this community, and...
