    Dena Martin, The Times|Jan 11, 2018

WAITSBURG – The College Football National Championships played second fiddle for community members concerned about the fate of the proposed 2018-19 Dayton-Waitsburg full athletic and activities combine. Local sports took precedence as more than 50 people skipped the NCAA game in favor of speaking their mind at a community meeting held at the Waitsburg Elementary School library on Jan. 8. One of the most repeated and passionate sentiments expressed at the meeting was that parents should bow out, trust their elected officials, and allow both s...

  • Flood Study is a Poor Idea

    The Times|Jan 11, 2018

Thanks to Terry Jacoy for his vote against entering into an agreement with the Corps of Engineers to fund a study of Waitsburg’s flooding by the Touchet River and Coppei Creek. Councilman Jacoy’s dissent of this study shows someone is thinking with open eyes that such knowledge is at the exclusion of wisdom. Waitsburg’s $225,000.00 share in a $550,000.00 package would go a long ways in lessening this city’s flood damage in order to clean out and deepen the river bottom in and beyond city boundaries. Doing what is needed, not “studyi...

  • Good Manners Still Count in Business

    Don C. Brunell, The Times|Jan 11, 2018

By Don C. Brunell Our parents drilled into our heads that saying “please” and “thank you” were not only part of everyday life, but were essential to operating a successful business. They are the basic ingredients of “Good Manners.” For more than 30 years, our family owned and operated the garbage collection business for Walkerville, a small incorporated Montana city north of Butte. It was part-time operation, which required about 8 hours a week. In the early 1950s, our family posted a $100 bond...

  • Talk about Art

    Carolyn Henderson, The Times|Jan 11, 2018

Christmas may be the season for giving, but it's not the only one. And while January seems an unlikely candidate for altruism, at Wenaha Gallery, it's the perfect time for the community to give back to the community through the gallery's Annual Canned Food Drive. "We purposely chose January as the month for our food drive because during the Christmas season, there is so much focus on gift-giving and celebration that once you are over the seasonal holidays, people are almost burnt out," says Pat...

    Dena Martin, The Times|Jan 11, 2018

WAITSBURG – After hearing from both parties involved and engaging in a brief discussion at their Dec. 20 meeting, the Waitsburg City Council decided to hand a noise ordinance issue over to the Planning Commission for review. The issue arose when the manager of the apartments located behind Whiskey Canyon Sports Bar & Grill, which is commercially zoned, complained that trucks parked overnight at the restaurant with their engines idling disturbed apartment residents. • TEENY MCMUNN: MY RECIPE BOX

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Jan 11, 2018

First, I have not made last week's soup recipe, because I had not picked up the garam masala spice, only to find out that my back alley neighbor has some she is willing to share so I will make the soup soon. I have not made this recipe either, but will for the church potluck. I think this is an old recipe that has been around for a while. Some of the comments were that it is a tradition for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas gatherings. I would think also for a Valentine's get together. They call it a salad, though I think it fits into the dessert...

  • Strange But True

    Samantha Weaver, The Times|Jan 11, 2018

    * It was Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both houses of the U.S. Congress, who made the following sage observation: “Those of us who shout the loudest about Americanism in making character assassinations are all too frequently those who, by our own words and acts, ignore some of the basic principles of Americanism: The right to criticize; The right to hold unpopular beliefs; The right to protest; The right of independent thought.” * According to historians, British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill slept on silk sheets and...
