New requirements will mean tougher rules on reporting instances of harassment and bullying, a community outreach component, changes in the definition of bullying and harassment, and more specific requirements for prevention and intervention . Andy Maheras, the "new guy on the block," as he puts it, hopes to get a jump...

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Jan 20, 2011

This morning I watched a gaggle of snow geese honk their way over the house, flying north. I looked up between their feathered underbellies, little orange legs tucked tightly under their bodies, and caught a glimpse of the lavender sky, dappled in violet hues against a backdrop of waving silvertip spruce and 40-foot dancing pines. It just took my breath away. It's this kind of subtle beauty that reminds us why we live here in Touchet Valley. By late afternoon, I'd baked an old-fashioned gingerbread, a request granted to my Wine Guy. The house s... Full story

  • 125 Years Of Stories

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Jan 20, 2011

DAYTON - When a building grows to be as old as the First Christian Church in Dayton, it collects stories. The 125-year-old structure has stood on the corner of Third and Park streets in Dayton overlooking the schoolyard across the street for so long, it has seen generations of Columbia County residents come forth into the world, mature into adulthood and sometimes move on. Nadine Warren, at age 84, is one who hasn't moved on. " I was raised in this church, I consider it my church, and I just don...

  • A “Simple” Life Around The Piano

    Jane Butler, Guest Column|Jan 20, 2011

I was reading about life "being simple" in Dayton in 1902 from a booklet printed in 2002 celebrating Grace Episcopal Church's centennial. "Only 14 percent of the homes in the entire country had a bathtub," it read. I noticed there was no mention of pianos in the homes, but that's what was on my mind. I took piano lessons in the '20s and '30s. It occurred to me that many of my friends or acquaintances did have pianos as well as my family. That was during the Depression. I have felt blessed that my parents kept paying for my lessons, and I...

  • Times Announces New Scholarship Program

    Jan 20, 2011

A few weeks ago, Dayton High School senior Davy Philips was sitting behind a table in the entrance to the gym during one of the Bulldogs' evening basketball games. He had a number of silent auction items laid out for patrons to bid on, including a generously donated season's pass to Ski Bluewood. Philips' goal was to raise funds for Dayton's fifthgrade ski program run by teacher John Lindsey. And he succeeded, bringing in about $1,000 that, if all goes as planned, may be matched by the Pepsi Co. Last fall, a Waitsburg High School senior, Megan... Full story

  • What Goes Around... Comes Around

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jan 20, 2011

WAI T SBURG - The conversation didn't last long. Ross Hamann recalls how he was helping a Cycle Oregon official in the food line under one of the giant tents set up near the Cardinals football field when some 2,500 cyclists and support staff passed through town late last summer. The president of the WP booster club was passing out plates and silverware when the Cycle Oregon official pointed to the sports storage shack right outside the tent and asked what it was. It's worth describing the shack...
