I t seems to me that small towns often have a tradition of grabbing hold of a specific holiday and hugging tightly to squeeze all they can from it. I grew up in Condon, Ore. where the 4th of July was the holiday of choice. The Fourth was spent watching the town parade, playing games in the park, attending the rodeo and then dancing the night away at the fairgrounds. It was, as they say, "a big deal". Those familiar with Touchet's traditions are aware that May Day is their "big deal," complete... Full story
Last year I had fun writing about the surprisingly good Pasek Cellars Cranberry wine, which brought about some awesome and somewhat funny responses from some of you. I know it was a big leap of faith but wasn't it great to surprise your family and friends with an interesting Washington state oddity? This year's recommendation is on the mainstream side and it's local. Being it's Thanksgiving, I'll talk turkey and turkey needs wine! Since I rarely prepare turkey any other time of the year (much to the chagrin of the National Turkey Federation) I...
I n sticking with this Thanksgiving theme, I'm talking gravy - real homemade from scratch gravy. Please, I beg of you - don't buy that stuff in a can or in that packet! That's not gravy - it's salty paste with fake chicken flavor- ing for goodness sake. You can re-sole you shoes with that canned stuff and the powder in the packet? You can fine sand your cabinetry with it! Considering how easy it is to make great gravy you should never EVER buy that stuff again. So how do you make great homemade gravy? Well sit down here by the fire and I'll...

PRESCOTT - In the first minute of the WP Tigers' second half against St. George Friday, it looked like the home team had a chance of gaining the upper hand against an arch rival that beat them twice before during the regular season. After a scoreless first half, striker Ernesto Valdovinos broke through the Dragons' defenses in the 41st minute and put one in the net on an assist from Jose Pananagua. But then, the team made a classic mistake, assistant coach Jay Potts said. The Tigers got off th...
WAITSBURG - The Southeast 2B Football League named its all-league team last week, and it included eight Waitsburg- Prescott players. "They only know how to winhellip;.winning is a habit at this point and an expectation." WP had the most players on the list, followed by Tri- Cities Prep and Asotin, with seven players each. Following is the list of WP's All-League players, with Bartlow's comments...

PASCO - The Lady Bulldogs fought hard to remain in playoff contention, but the effort wasn't quite enough to get them past Davenport or TriCities Prep this weekend. "Overall, we had a good season and I see a lot of improvement in individual players," head coach Shannon Turner said about her young team. "It was a good experience to play at the District 7 & 9 Regional Tournament and will help us for next year." Dayton lost both games that could have advanced them to state. The girls lost in t...
WAITSBURG - Call it a triumvirate. Or football's version of the "triple-double." Waitsburg-Prescott running back Chance Leroue ran for a touchdown, caught a pass for a touchdown (twice actually) and threw a pass for yet another touchdown, as the Cardinals cruised to a 41-14 victory over Liberty here Friday night. On top of all that, Leroue also rushed for 167 yards, putting him over the 1,000 yard mark for the season. He also had 40 yards receiving. The win puts the Cardinals into the WIAA... Full story

WAITSBURG - "If Rov- er is 10 years older than Spot, and next year Rover will be twice as old as Spot, how old are they now?" "In what structure of the body would an arthrotomy be performed?" Questions like these formed the basis of the Knowledge Bowl tourna- ment hosted by Waitsburg and held at the First Christian Church (and surrounding buildings) on Tuesday afternoon. Teams from six schools - Waitsburg, Dayton, Prescott, Pomeroy, Clarkston and DeSales - attended Tues- day's meet. While all th...

This is the season when wild mushrooms bloom: the rich, ribbed, bulbous, billowy fungus you'll find in your supermarket produce department and Farmers Markets in an array of colors and textures. Being harvested right now in parts of northern California and Oregon, wild mushrooms flourish where a cool, rainy climate is ideal for growth. As a Chef, I prize the Hedgehog mushroom for its versatil- ity, firm texture and spicy hints of black pepper, coffee and chocolate. The Matsutake mushroom is revered for its spicy flavor and, if forging for...
