  • State Cuts Could Close Dayton Hospital

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

DAYTON - Columbia County Health System staff members and commissioners voiced concern Monday night that recently proposed budget cuts at the state level may cause the closure of Dayton General Hospital. Jim Kimes, a member of the district's board of commissioners, told the Dayton City Council on Monday that a round of cuts to be proposed in the upcoming special session would cut about $400,000 from Dayton General Hospital's budget. The cuts target critical care access hospitals in rural areas across the state. "If their proposal goes through,...

  • Cardinals Beat Broncos, Advance To Semifinals

    Nov 17, 2011

The WP Cardinals beat the Ritzville Broncos in Pasco Saturday, sending the undeated home team to the semifinals, again in Pasco, against Colfax next weekend. The lopsided 42-7 victory came despite fears that Ritzville, which lost only one game against the Colfax Bulldogs during the season, would be a tough opponent. The time of the semifinal has yet to be announced....

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

WAITSBURG -- The verdict is out and WP football topped the list for all-league players in District 9. Eight Cardinals made the cut for the 2011 season with head coach Jeff Bartlow receiving the nod for Coach of the Year. "It's an honor," said coach Bartlow. "The kids work hard and it reflects on them too." The Cardinals are still alive in state playoff action, and as of this last week, the players' statistics are impressive . Bartlow's team is averaging 159.2 yards passing per game with 220.4 ya...

  • Adams Named WP’s Wrestling Coach

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

PRESCOTT -- WP's Tiger wrestling program is new, but one look at Lanny Adam's old worn Asics wrestling shoes will tell you he's no rookie to the sport. Adams began wrestling in Omak when he was a mere five years old. He continued wrestling all through his high school years as well as playing football and competing in track and field. "I enjoyed football, and track was more of a social sport for me," said Adams. "Wrestling has always been my number one. It's the chess of sports." Adams began his...

  • Dayton Sports Banquet

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

DAYTON - Sure, the Bulldogs wanted to go further . The 2011 football would have loved to face WP in the playoffs this weekend instead of being knocked out early by the Ritzville Broncos. The 2011 volleyball team had high hopes to go to district and return to the state playoffs as they did last year. The 2011 soccer team would have been thrilled to win a few more games against a few more teams. Yet all expectations aside, Dayton's 2011 fall sports season gave the Bulldogs every excuse, as...

  • WP’s Ready For Broncos

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

WAITSBURG -- When the Cardinals meet the Broncos in the quarterfinals this weekend, one observer may have a bit of a deja vu. Dean Bickelhaupt, head coach for the Dayton Bulldogs whose season just ended, will be there, burning with curiosity to see if WP can do what his team couldn't: beat the tough scrappy team from Lind-Ritzville-Sprague that suffered only a single onepoint loss (14-13) against the dreaded Bulldogs from Colfax who denied WP a state championship last year. "It will be a good...

  • WP Tigers Advance

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

MOSES LAKE -- A playoff win against Moses Lake Christian was predicted for the WP Tigers, but what was not foreseen was the time it took for the team to score its first goal. Just as they did earlier in the season, the Tigers beat the Lions by a wide margin, this time 6-1, but they weren't the first to get on the scoreboard. The win gives the Tigers a 14-2-2 record for the season and sends them to the semifinals against St. George in Sumner on Friday. Last year, they were knocked out of the...

  • WP’s Boys Of Fall Remain Undefeated

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

WAITSBURG -- The WP Cardinals scored on every first-half possession to send the Brewster Bears into hibernation for the year with a 48-7 rainy-day victory last Saturday. The Bears took the opening kickoff and began its first drive on its own 30-yard line. Two short carries and an off-sides call on the Cardinal defense helped them to a first down, but a quarterback sack from Cardinal Brenddon Donovan put the Bears in a punting situation from its own 42-yard line . T he Cardinals opening drive...

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

WAITSBURG - A phone call from Waitsburg resident Laura Jean Hevel's distant relative put responsibility in her hands that she never thought she would have. That phone call was from Hevel's grandmother's first cousin twice removed, Gail Parsons of Elma. Parsons had been the keeper of the family history, including letters from a very significant ancestor. And Parsons wanted Hevel to have some of her artifacts. Now, she is the keeper of letters and artifacts from her ancestors and has collected...

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

Each year, I make my own door wreath of recycled materials collected throughout the year on treks across the Great Northwest. For instance, this year's wreath is to be composed of old grape vines clipped in spring from Pepper Ridge Winery. The twine from a visit to a Napa Cheese Maker. The grapes and leaves are from a discarded wine display found while attending last year's Aspen Winter Food Fest, and the satin ribbon, something I bought at a Dayton community yard sale. "Now, where's my scissors?" Over the weekend I sampled a new Bordeaux of...

CITY LEAF BIN AVAILABLE TO CITIZENS WAITSBURG - The City of Waitsburg has a leaf bin available for citizens to put their leaves in down at the City Shop. It's available Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The city asks that people not push their leaves out into the street as it makes sweeping more time consuming for our public works crew. The city also notes that the railroad is going to be doing work on the crossing on Mill Race road, adjacent to the old mill site on Wednesday, Nov. 16, and the road will be closed that day. • LETTER

    Nov 17, 2011

To the Editor, Not surprisingly, the bond to fund the Coppei Creek levy improvements failed. You might wonder why with my being an owner of two properties in the designated flood zone of Waitsburg, I would vote against it. In short, because it was not a part of a comprehensive flood plan. I was one of only five community members who attended the meeting that the Army Corps of Engineers held to inform Waitsburg residents about the proposed Coppei levy improvements. The information I gleaned from this meeting was that while we could spend, with m...

  • The BURG

    Jane Butler, Guest Column|Nov 17, 2011

"Nor were the women of less fortitude than their men, while they did remain at home in their cabins, their work was hard; carried great responsibilities and suffered many terrifying moments from the Indians who were all about and delighted in frightening them. Fearful of the natives, Lois Lloyd, during her first year in the valley in 1859, when Albert was away for the day, had taken her baby and a lunch and hidden in the woods until he returned in the evening. It was such women that 'Lyman's History' recorded: Not one of these noble women but m...

D About Needs & Good Deeds AYTON -- When Teeny McMunn's sister decided to take her own life, she let everyone know why. The sister suffered from the onset of Huntington's disease, a chronic hereditary condition that destroys a patient's ability to feel, think and move. Their mother at Booker Rest Home had died from it and the young woman didn't want to suffer from the same degenerative demise or be a burden to her family. So, she wrote everyone a letter and then killed herself with helium. It...

  • Grateful For Gratitude

    Nov 17, 2011

Members of the Waitsburg Christian Church found a small care package at their door step or tied to their door knob Sunday. In a plastic bag was a little bundle of chocolate candy and a 8.5x11 seasonal Thanksgiving greeting. As part of a reminder how blessed we are, the message said this is "a time to give thanks to the Lord above, for friends and family to share our love. May we share these blessings of love with our neighbors too, as our Lord and savior would have us do." Instigator Pam Conover credited the congregation's children and some of...

  • Jacoy Honored For 23 Years

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

WAITSBURG - Last Wednesday night, a room in Preston Hall packed with school district employees and community members honored the closure of Terry Jacoy's 23 years on the Waitsburg School Board. Jacoy has served on the board since 1988. School board Chairman Ross Hamann said that in the time that Jacoy has been on the board, 590 kids have received their diplomas. "When you do something like this, you don't do it with the idea of being remunerated," Jacoy said. Jacoy said he enjoys looking back...

  • Liquor Questions Linger

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

WAITSBURG - With the passing of Initiative 1183 that takes government out of liquor sales, the future of Touchet Valley liquor stores is uncertain. "At the state level, I don't think they thought it would pass," said Karen Hoyle, the manager of the liquor store in Dayton. "Everybody's got to scramble." The Washington State Liquor Control Board is trying to answer questions as best as it can, but there are not many concrete answers out there at this time, said Brian Smith, the communications director for the board. The board has put up fact...

  • Town Turns Out For Vets

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 17, 2011

WAITSBURG -- Karen Fisher-Alaniz had no idea her father was a hero. When he was 81 years old, her father Murray Fisher gave her more than 400 pages of letters about his service during World War II. It turned out Fisher-Alaniz's father did not sit behind a desk during the war as he had told her before, but he had been secretly breaking the code of the Japanese. Fisher-Alaniz presented part of her story and her book "Breaking The Code" to Waitsburg High School and middle school students last...
