  • Cards End On Top In Classic Valley Rivalry

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 2, 2012

WAITSBURG - In one of the liveliest Touchet Valley rivalry games in recent memory, the WP Cardinals handed the Dayton Bulldogs their first loss of the season at a packed Kison Court Monday night. Despite reaching deep to preserve their undefeated status, the visiting Bulldogs fell, 51-44, to the home team. A fourth-quarter rally brought Dayton within five points of evening the score, but it wasn't enough to catch up with the Cardinals, who were much improved since the two teams met in Dayton earlier in the season. "We worked our butts off,"...

  • Lady Dogs’ Fortunes Seesaw

Rainier Matthee, Special To The Times|Feb 2, 2012

ASOTIN - After a couple of weeks away from the basketball court, the Lady Bulldogs came out swinging against the Knights last Thursday, but stumbled badly during Friday night's game against the Asotin Panthers. The Bulldogs beat the Knights, 36-30. At the outset of their game against Walla Walla Valley Academy, the Bulldogs seemed evenly matched, but jumped ahead halfway into the first quarter and kept a comfortable double-digit lead until the fourth quarter. Several penalties were placed on each team as they competed hard in the first...

  • Cards Take Panthers, 62-50

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Feb 2, 2012

WAITSBURG -- The WP Cardinals had five players in double digits on their way to a 62-50 victory over the Asotin Panthers last Saturday night, securing them a second-place league standing. Once again, WP's Billy Brown out-jumped his opponent and the Cardinals capitalized on it with an opening basket from Brown. Asotin was quick to answer, but WP's Zach Bartlow drove up the middle with his usual flair and added two more for the Cards. The Panthers full-court press held the Cardinals off while they put in two baskets, but WP's Dustin Wooderchak...

  • Dogs Beat WWVA, Asotin

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 2, 2012

ASOTIN - During the first half of the Bulldogs' game against Asotin, it appeared as though their undefeated status might be at risk. At one point during the second quarter, the Panthers had a three-point lead, 21- 18. But Dayton came roaring back after the break, outscoring Asotin, 19-2, in the third quarter and 16-14 in the fourth to win the game, 62-39. After winning their game against Walla Walla Valley Academy with a comfortable 27-point margin, 68-41, the Bulldogs went, 15-0, for the season before their encounter with the muchimproved WP...

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Feb 2, 2012

WAITSBURG -- The WP Lady Cardinals knocked the Asotin Panthers off their undefeated pedestal last Saturday night with a 52-48 victory on Kison Court. The Panthers were quick to score with a basket from JaLisa Jose and immediately put the full-court press on the Cardinals. The Cards were moving the ball well, drawing two early Panther fouls, and beating the press on their way to open scoring with a three-pointer from Krystal Harris. The Panthers quickly answered with a basket of their own, but were called for their third foul at just 1.5...

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 2, 2012

WAITSBURG - Unseating the Asotin Panthers from their top spot in the league this weekend gave the WP Cardinals the momentum to beat the Lady Bulldogs Monday night, 55-35. Dayton lost against the Panthers last Friday. "We went cold," Bulldog head coach Clayton Strong said. "They made a run and we never recovered." Hailey Goenen opened the Cardinals' scoring drive with a trey, followed by several WP lay ups that quickly put her team ahead, 9-2. With lay ups from Nicole Lambert and Shelby Smith,...

  • Dear Editor:

    Feb 2, 2012

This letter will serve as a strong endorsement of both the M & O four-year levy and the Capital Levy for Technology and School Improvements, on the ballot for Feb. 14. As a retired WSU professor (15 years in the College of Veterinary Medicine and 12.5 years in the College of Agriculture), I have had the unique opportunity to have former Dayton students and sons and daughters of former Dayton students in my classes over the years. In addition, over the past 4 years of my retirement, I have been privileged to assist some of your elementary teache...

  • Dear Editor,

    Feb 2, 2012

I want to personally thank the parents, community members and patrons of the Prescott School District for their commitment to kids. Your continued support of the district's Maintenance and Operations Levy has proven to be critical to the district's ability to offer our students a wellrounded academic program and an exciting athletic and activities program. On Feb. 14, voters in the Prescott School District will again have the opportunity to demonstrate their support for and pride in the district by voting "YES" for the Prescott School District...

  • Dear Editor,

    Feb 2, 2012

Like most Americans, I am conservative, Christian and vote Republican. As a member of this "silent majority," I tend to watch from the sidelines, politically. The last city council meeting is a case in point. The council had previously declared the need to raise funds for city operations, whether through taxes, a fee added to vehicle tabs or both. Like many, I waited until the last council meeting to attend and voice my opinion. I support the city council (the mayor, council members and the city administrator). I am thankful for what Mayor Walt...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Feb 2, 2012

To the Editor, I'd like to add my thoughts to two excellent earlier letters concerning the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v FEC and the matter of "corporate personhood." The affect of Citizens United and the rise of "super pacs" has taken a wrecking ball to democracy in the United States by opening the floodgates of money in corporate and union treasuries to fund elections. It's a danger people from the right, left and center should agree upon. Simply put, corporations (and unions, though they have far less money) can spend without...

  • Coalition Strives To Keep Our Community Healthy

    Jillian Beaudry|Feb 2, 2012

DAYTON - In December, Dayton High School student Carlos Oribio, on behalf of his school's Students Helping Each Other club, told the Dayton City Council he was concerned about his peers' attitudes toward alcohol. Oribio and the club are not the only ones concerned. In fact, Columbia County has an entire group of volunteers who are on the same page with Oribio and are working to alter the community and focus on raising healthy kids who will say no to drugs and alcohol. The Columbia County...
