WAITSBURG - Before Martha Mason moved to Thailand for two years in the early 1960s, she had her sights on music for her creative journey through life. But when she returned to the U.S., ready to pursue a college degree in the field, she couldn't do it. "It was too emotional for me at the time," said Mason, who now lives in Dayton. "It just wasn't working." And while in Thailand, she had discovered some- thing else that would lead her down a different path. "I had an epiphany," she said. "On a...
Oprah Winfrey and I don’t usually agree when it comes to book recommendations. I tried; I really did, to read at least a dozen or more of the 70 books Oprah recommended during the 15 years her Book Club segments aired on The Oprah Winfrey Show, but I just couldn’t force myself to finish them. You see, I read for pleasure, entertainment and escape. Based on her book picks, I can only conclude that Oprah reads to be challenged both intellectually and emotionally. I find the subject matter and...
Le s Miserables is the heart- wrenching story of paroled convict Jean Valjean ( Hugh Jackman). Released after being arrested for stealing a loaf of bread and serving his time, he breaks parole and escapes to start a new life. He spends his days running from his past. After his escape, Valjean runs a factory where he employs women, including Fantine, (Anne Hathaway), who is fired by a foreman for suspected promiscuity. Fantine is determined to provide for her sick child, so she sells...
Looking for some good, clean fun that won’t cost you a dime? If you’re anything like my boys, Google SketchUp might be the answer. I happened upon a recommendation for this software while browsing Pinterest (another form of good, clean fun). After a brief perusal of the description, I watched a Youtube video demonstration and was hooked. I promptly called my boys in to share the video and see if they were as impressed as I was. “That is soooo cool!” my 13-year-old stated repeatedly. They were...
PASCO - The Dayton Boys Varsity basketball team ended their 2013 season on a high note with a 57-55 cliff-hanger win over Tri Cities Prep on Saturday. "It was a great way to end their year," Bulldogs head coach Roy Ramirez said. "They did a great job finish- ing that game." Plagued by second-half scoring slumps for most of the season, the Bulldogs displayed one of their strongest after-the-half rallies yet, outscoring the Jaguars 19-12 in the third quarter and holding on to their lead until the...

DAYTON - The Waitsburg Prescott girls' basketball team struggled against Asotin in their first post- season game Tuesday night, falling 40-30 to the Panthers. The lady Cardinals opened strong, matching the Panthers' height and speed to take the lead early on. The Cardinals came out ready to play with energy to boot. That energy translated into points, as the Cardinals finished the first period ahead of the Panthers, 10-8. The second period started slow, both teams struggling to hit the net an...
DAYTON - As basketball season comes to a close and post-season play begins, Dayton's lady Bulldogs gear up for playoffs with hard work, determination and a little superstition. Seniors McKayla Bickelhaupt, Jessica Tate, Malia Frame and Samantha Harting took a few minutes out of practice to indulge on excitement about the playoffs and some of the strategy on their minds during the coming practices. Frame, who is recovering from being sick is focused on getting healthy. She said she expects teams they take on in playoffs to bring the sam...
TRICITIES - After a slow start for both teams, the Bulldogs surged through in the fourth quarter to come from behind for a win over Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars, 53- 48 Saturday. A fter spending a month in Spain's Apennine Moun- tains, I know something about Spanish wine. But recently I was floored tasting the Spanish-styled red wines produced by Milton-Freewater's family-run Castillo De Feliciana Vineyards and Winery. Castillo De Feliciana winemaker Christopher Castillo piqued my imagination with his Feliciana '09 Tempranillo. The Feliciana vintage is a well-structured sturdy wine reminiscent of a barrel-aged Chianti. However, where the finish- ing characteristics in a Chianti wine are dry, the Feliciana Tempranillo...
The wheat market is not hungry. The mind of the great lumbering beast is not focused clearly, as spring is yet a time away and there is sufficient wheat to last for the next 90 days. Most of the major importers of the world were aggressively buying just a couple of months ago. They have covered their short-term requirements, leaving relatively small adjustments and opportunistic buying on the agenda. So the market wanders, with no particular place to go. As the calendar rolls onward, it appears that the Midwest- ern wheat and corn belts have...
