    Dian McClurg, The Times|Feb 10, 2011

DAYTON - Dayton farmers now have more options for their agronomy needs. The Walla Walla Farmers Co-Op has opened an office at 509 Cameron Street, right next door to Columbia County Transportation, on Port of Columbia property. It is its third satellite outside Walla Walla. The business hosted a luncheon tour for members Tuesday afternoon. The new location will have just one office employee, but field men will come to farmers out of Walla Walla like they already do, said Co- Op General Manager Mike Potter. "We already have some growers in the...

  • No Races For Waitsburg, Dayton and Walla Walla

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 10, 2011

WAITSBURG - There will be no pari mutual horseracing this year in Waitsburg, Dayton and Walla Walla. The Washington State Horseracing Commission decided Thursday to give only six days of racing to the Class C "Bush" circuit and they all went to Sun Downs in Kennewick. The decision, which came as a disappointment to many in the region's horseracing community, does not necessarily spell the end of nearly a century of racing in the Touchet Valley. But changes will have to be made in state law and in the way racing is funded to pave the way for...

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Feb 10, 2011

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Feb 10, 2011

Christy's Realty, a longtime Dayton real estate agency, has moved to the building where Columbia County Title continues to operate. "We wanted to do business in our own building," said Christy's owner Garry Snyder. Christy's opened in its downtown location at the end of January. "It's the best location in Dayton, actually," Snyder said. The real estate office was formerly housed with Columbia County...

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Feb 10, 2011

I found it very comforting to be home this weekend to answer letters from you, readers, to re-pot house plants and do a little cooking of all things. Last week, I had such an incredible wine tasting while visiting Livermore, California, wine country, that all the way home I knew I needed to get into the kitchen and revamp an old 1960s Haight Ashbury Chicken Mole recipe ,to pair with the one wine that "blew my cork in Livermore." But first, a discussion about the Livermore Valley AVA. As a child I remember driving through this part of Northern...

    Pioneer Portraits|Feb 10, 2011

Ten Years Ago February 22, 2001 The largest change order in the high school renovation project came to light this week, inadequate footing of soil and wood in the basement. This situation was remedied by additional contractors working at an additional cost of $73,461 but will lead to an early completion date. The importance Corbett Mill in Huntsville played in the settling of the community is highlighted in this paper. The grist mill was built in December 1881 and January 1882. In 1955, Orville Fullerton sold the mill and water rights to the...

  • The Last Stand Revisited

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Feb 10, 2011

DAYTON - The following, stuff-of-legends account, which has intrigued history buffs for almost 100 years, ran in a local newspaper in 1920: Dayton, April 8. - Frank Finkel, a pioneer resident of Columbia county, was the chief speaker at the Thursday luncheon of the Dayton Kiwanis Club this week. He was eye witness to the Custer Massacre and gave to the club the account of his thrilling escape and the circumstances which prevented the knowledge of his survival from reaching the government at the...

MAYOR PLEADS NOT GUILTY DAYTON - Starbuck Mayor Darcy Linklater pleaded not guilty in Columbia County District Court last week to DUI charges filed against him after his Jan. 25 arrest on McKay-Alto Road. Columbia County Sheriff's records indicate Linklater was stopped at 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, as he headed toward Waitsburg after a possible DUI tip was called in to dispatch. Linklater refused to take the breath test for blood alcohol content, according to county prosecutor Rea Culwell. He was arrested, issued a criminal citation...

  • Starbuck Sewer Rate Policy Needs To Be Enforced

    Feb 10, 2011

This is in response to Verna Foley's recent letter to the editor. I have been on city council for the town of Starbuck since 1996. I am also the certifi ed wastewater operator for the town. I do this voluntarily. Foley's letter to the editor was full of false statements. Foley implied that she should not be charged a sewer dump fee at the trailer park she and Mayor Darcy Linklater own because she is already being charged at a rate above what other residents and businesses pay. This is not true. Their overall bill is higher because their usage...

  • 1,311 Stairs, 69 Floors

    Feb 10, 2011

A firefighter's full bunker gear (the boots, pants, coat and helmet), mask and selfcontained breathing apparatus weigh close to 75 pounds. The boots are big, heavy and tough, making you feel as though your feet have been encased in rubber-coated cement blocks. The thick pants are nearly inflexible, like wearing rubber shields. The helmet itself weighs several pounds and is loaded with attachments. And the whole get-up is hotter than an attic in the summertime. A firefighter's duty, however, is...

  • Is Crackdown Fair?

    Feb 10, 2011

Far be it for us to suggest how local authorities should enforce the law. But we've had a chance to observe some patterns and activities in Columbia County, intentional or unintentional, which raise questions about fairness. Let's begin with Ski Bluewood. Along Fourth Street in Dayton and the North Touchet Road in the county, an unusually large number of patrols were seen pulling over motorists for speeding violations. According to reports, two sheriff's office deputies were along the route in the mountains and two patrols from the U.S. Forest...

WAITSBURG - Or should the dateline be "PALM SPRINGS?" Let's go there for a minute in the very recent memory of Waitsburg's very own filmmaker Karen Stanton Gregutt. January. Eighty degrees and lush. Check. Boulevards lined with palm trees, packed with Beamers and Bentleys. Check. Hollywood honchos arriving at screening theaters a la Oscar Night. Check. Beautiful women and handsome guys. Check. Tans. Check. Valets running like mad. Check. A poolside party for French filmmakers at the former home...

  • To Race Or Not To Race

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 10, 2011

DAYTON - Lee Ann Literal has been a racehorse owner and trainer for almost a quarter of a century. The stables on her 500- acre ranch on Smith Hollow Road are a living testament to that long "track" record. She owns 29 horses, including five that are currently racing and 20 that have retired from the sport over the years. Literal doesn't make her living racing horses, but the purse money she gets from the five racers does help pay for the care of the retirees. For that reason alone, she wants horse racing in the area to continue. "I love the...

  • The Champs From The Boys Ranch

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Feb 10, 2011

Editor's Note: The last names of students from Jubilee Youth Ranch were omitted at the request of Jubilee staff in order to comply with the school's policy of confidentiality. P RESCOTT - This is the story of a group of troubled young men and their often unrecognized contribution to the success of Waitsburg-Prescott sports. To be fair, it' s taken years for WP coaches and play- ers, together with staff at the private school where these youths live, to learn how to work with the boys of Jubilee...
