  • CROPS

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Feb 16, 2012

The wheat futures market has bounced off of a range high last week and moved lower since Feb. 6, as Chicago has trimmed 26 cents from the week-ago level of $6.70. Soft White wheat bids were actually up more than a dime in the same week, with current bids around $7.08 per bushel delivered to Portland, a reflection of good demand from the Pacific Rim countries for white wheat. For Chicago, that puts us just about halfway back down in the range, within a nickel of the center of the 5-month range. Whenever a market that has been trading in a range...

  • Bartlow Chooses Eastern Oregon

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 16, 2012

WAITSBURG -- Recalling the grace-under-pressure composure WP Cardinals Quarterback Zach Bartlow displayed in his team's climb to the title game last football season, it seems hard to believe that he was afraid of being a football player at one time. It was back in fifth grade. He was just a few days too old to stay with the Little Giants, the team he'd played for since third grade. So he became one of the youngest and smallest players on the Big Giants. "I was scared," he said, explaining that... Full story

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Feb 16, 2012

WAITSBURG -- The WP Lady Cardinals had 11 players light up the board to put away the Walla Walla Valley Academy Knights with a 65-31 victory last Tuesday night. The Cardinals took the tip off and hit the court running, showing the Knights no mercy with their quick perimeter passing while dominating the boards from inside. WP's Dionna Baker worked her way inside and put up a Ronnie Hulce pass for the first Cardinal bucket, and then followed that up with a steal from the Knights' end of the court...

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 16, 2012

  • Four’s A Crowd?

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 16, 2012

WALLA WALLA -- The way divo Morgan James sees it, putting four big guys with big voices and big egos on a stage together can be a recipe for disaster. But it doesn't have to be. It wasn't for the three classic opera tenors - Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti. And it isn't for the Four Tenors who are currently stealing the limelight at the Powerhouse Theater, James said. "We complement each other," he said. "We're very much a group of four strong individual singers. Everyone... Full story

When I first bit into a Paul Roberson heirloom tomato, I could hear my dad yelling out, "Did you kids tie-up the tomatoes today?" He would always yell this right after we got settled in to watch Disney presents "Old Yeller." Seriously, the Roberson heirloom tomato tastes like tomatoes used to taste when we were kids. A new seed collector's reference gardening book is now available by Baker Creek Seed Company; "Heirloom Life Gardener." This book talks about the lost heirloom seeds of our continent, a growing concern for the purists and...

  • To the Editor,

    Feb 16, 2012

On Feb 7, 2012 our dog was hit and killed by the garbage truck. We do not blame BDI at all as the dog has chased the truck in the past and we had just installed a system around our fence for him, however that day the collar was not working. BDI called Kelly at city hall and she immediately called my cell phone. After arriving home within 15 minutes of the call, not only did the sheriff come, but Travis Newman, a city employee was there within minutes of my arrival. I had expected to have to take care of the entire situation on my own as my...

  • To the Editor,

    Feb 16, 2012

Representative Walsh has sponsored HB 2516, concerning legalizing same- sex marriages in Washington State. Nearly two thirds of the 16th District made their intentions absolutely clear when they rejected Referendum 71 (R-71) in 2009. They did so again when they elected a Republican to represent them in the state legislature last election. Furthermore, only one quarter of one percent of Washington citizens have taken advantage of the provisions of R-71 since its inception. As a constituent, I am outraged that my representative has taken this... Full story
