    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 17, 2011

DAYTON - With the Cardinals and Bulldogs heading for the district tournament and NCAA playoffs just around the corner, why not add a little February Madness? It will be coming to town in the form of a visit from a basketball giant. The Reign Man of the Seattle Supersonics, sixtime NBA All Star Shawn Kemp, is expected to come to Ski Bluewood next week to promote a new kind of fast-action basketball game among youths. The sport is called 3BA, a 3-on-3 full-court game co-founded by Walla...

In a rollercoaster cliffhanger game against the tough Irish, the Lady Cardinals barely prevailed 40-36, while the WP men's team beat the very tenacious Dayton Bulldogs team 69-56 after seeing their lead shrink to 3 points not long before the final buzzer. The Cardinals go on to Spokane in a week and may face Brewster in the state tournament on...

  • Season Ends For Lady Bulldogs

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Feb 17, 2011

RICHLAND - The Lady Bulldogs achieved basketball league play-ins this week but were defeated by Liberty Christian 58-41 in a loser-out game Monday. Players and head coach Scott Hudson remained proud of their season, however. The young women started the year slowly but hit some exciting highs before it was over, Hudson said. "We played some really good games this year, we really did," he said Tuesday. The ladies, with several key players out from day one with injuries and illness, struggled in...

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 17, 2011

WAITSBURG - Al - though the WP men's team technically didn't have a perfect season, it was only two points short of it thanks to a loss at the hands of Weston McEwen in the first game of the season when the players just came off their very long and emotional football season. The Cardinals ended their regular season with a 79-68 victory over Liberty Christian Saturday and face Walla Walla Valley Academy on Kison Court at 6 p.m. Wednesday night. If they win, they will face the winner of the game...

  • Perfect Season, Now DeSales

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 17, 2011

WAITSBURG - Having already logged a perfect season, the Lady Cardinals Tuesday extended their historic winning streak with a 57-29 win over Liberty Christian. The women now go into the district championship game against DeSales at Whitman College on Friday. "DeSales is the toughest opponent of the season," head coach Jerry Baker said after the game against the Patriots. "It's a lot harder to beat them three times than it is to beat them twice." But running over league teams repeatedly like a...

  • Bulldogs Rise To The Challenge

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 17, 2011

WALLA WALLA - If there were ever a team that deserved to place third in the league and play tough, second-ranked Asotin in the Panthers' own den Wednesday, it's the Dayton Bulldogs men's team. They pulled out all the stops in a convincing 65-40 tie-breaker win over the Liberty Christian Patriots at the DeSales gym in Walla Walla Monday, leaving little doubt they have it in them to prevail over the talented and experienced Asotin players. "That was a good one," senior Bulldog Dain Henderson...

STARBUCK - Mary-Jo Sanderlin may have just the right attitude to make it as a business owner in Starbuck, "45 miles from anything." She and her husband, Dan, were new in town just a few months ago when they arrived fresh from the construction business in Montana. She's enthusiastic about snowmobiles, ATVs, quads and motorcycles. And at 29 years old, she's owned and operated a bar in Moses Lake and a power sports retail outlet. Now she and Dan are opening Rawhide Bar N Grill on Baxter Street in...

FEDS ASSESS IDAHO WOLF PLAN IDAHO - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced this week the availability of a draft Environmental Assessment of Idaho Department of Fish and Game's request to manage gray wolves in the Lolo Elk Management Zone in north central Idaho in response to impacts of wolf predation on elk. The Idaho proposal, if approved, would allow the state to reduce (through lethal means) the wolf population in the Lolo Zone to a minimum of 20 to 30 wolves in three to five packs from a current estimated level of 60 to 80 wolves....

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Feb 17, 2011

I n the wine business, there's nothing more apparent than one designated wine growing AVA compared to another. For those of you who may be new to wine lingo, AVA is short for American Viticulture Area, an official term designated to wine-grape growers by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Actually, the AVA serves as a point of reference defining the area's climate, soil, elevation and properties of the land in concern. This information is absolutely necessary for the grower, who, unlike a stock broker, will need to know what to...

  • Return Of The Green Giant

    Wren & Dian Mcclurg, The Times|Feb 17, 2011

DAYTON - The Green Giant has only been gone from Dayton since 2005, but people in town have already forgotten what a force it used to be in the community, says Dayton booster Ginny Butler. "Growing up in Dayton, I knew it was the major employer for many years," Butler said. "I remember in the '60s, you could work all summer long and earn enough to pay for a whole year of college, at $3,000. There is no job a kid can get today that will pay for a year of college in just three months." To remind...

BEWARE OF SCAMS DAYTON - The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of mail scams. Deputies have received several recent reports from local citizens regarding attempted scams through the mail. One of the scams involved the receipt of a check in the mail reportedly to help the recipient pay for the taxes on their prize winnings. Another involved winning a lottery or contest involving a large sum of money. To collect the award, the recipient was requested to mail in a check as a "processing fee." The old adage holds true that "if...

  • Dear Editor;

    Feb 17, 2011

For years, I have wanted to have a place to come with my horse in Dayton, where I grew up, and nearer to my extended family in the Walla Walla, Touchet area. About six years ago, I put up a 17th century style barn there with a small living area and corral and bought a small Ferguson tractor and implements to care for the piece. The tractor proved to be too small for the rough ground, so I prepared it for sale and bought a bigger John Deere 60. In October, when I tried to use the Ferguson, it scarcely would run. It had been vandalized. After...

  • The “Grande” Plan

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 17, 2011

Two weeks ago, I wrote about our pleasant surprise when we learned that the Times was a business with two buildings. We bought the company because we wanted to run the newspaper, but we also wanted to open a coffee shop on Main Street. At first, I thought the Times building at 139 Main would be the best place for an espresso bar, but the more I considered it, the more I realized we'd be much better off consolidating our news offices in a renovated front office and making the Mock building next...

  • Racing Can Be Sustainable

    Feb 17, 2011

Horseracing in the Touchet Valley and Walla Walla was dealt a blow last week when the Washington State Horseracing Commission announced it would give only six racing days to the entire Class C circuit of four eastern Washington tracks and that it will give all of them to Sun Downs in Kennewick. However, this setback, which doesn't come as a complete surprise, need not spell the end of a fine tradition here. In fact, we feel it can be a turning point for the sport. The Waitsburg Days of Real Sport board has already decided that their annual...
