SATTLER, Texas - It is conceivable that we could have been further from Waitsburg that day, say, in the far coves of coastal Maine or the swamps of Florida. But as it was, we were very far from the Touchet Valley - nearly five hours by plane and at a distance that would taken us some four days to drive if we'd gone by car - in a tiny town north of San Antonio, Texas. We, that's to say Karen, Niko and I, had come down during mid-winter break to see my oldest son, Rainier, who moved here several m...

PRESCOTT - A feder- ally mandated enforcement of the Americans with Dis- abilities Act (ADA) poses a big problem for the Prescott Joint Park and Recreation District and Prescott pool users. The new mandate re- quires public pools to install a lift so swimmers with disabilities can use the pool. The Prescott pool has a lift in place now, but the new man- date requires the lift be one that a user can operate alone and without assistance, unlike the lift currently in- stalled at the pool. At a...
One of my fondest memories of physical education in elementary school was Hoops for Heart day. It was a field day of activities unlike sports - which seemed to me like the choreographed taunting from coordinated classmates. I could actually feel good about participating in the jump-roping, hula-hooping, high-energy festivities. Encouraging children to be active can help inspire beneficial life-long habits. Plus, the annual local program is a lot of fun for students. With hula hoops and...
WAITSBURG - Hard work really does pay off for two Waitsburg athletes who signed letters of intent and claimed scholarships this week. Three-sport athlete Dalton Estes will focus his energy on football at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore. Estes will red- shirt his freshman year, preparing to play wide receiver for the Mountaineers. Estes signed his letter of intent on Monday, Feb. 25 with the support of some of his football teammates. Cross-country and track aficionado Seth Deal, w...
Friday, Saturday and Sunday mark the 70 or 80-somethingth edition of the Washington state B basketball tournament in Spokane. Well, actually it’s only the eighth Class 1B and eighth Class 2B tournaments. The old B classification was split into bigger small schools (93 to 207 students) and smaller small schools (less than 93) back in 2006. But both tournaments are still played in the same venue as previous B tourneys—Spokane’s Veteran’s Memorial Arena – and at the same time. Well, that’s...

The family of Don Hodgson wishes to ex- press out sincere ap- preciation and thanks to family, friends, the Dayton School District, and Don's students for the outpouring of caring and support we have received in Don's passing. The gift of bal- loons, cards, food, and attendance at the "pep rally" from the many small community members of Dayton, Waits- burg, Prescott, Walla Walla and Touchet was an amazing tribute to our son, husband and father during this dif- ficult time. To all who committed a donation of time to a community project or...

DAYTON - Lisa Caldwell's job is to expect the unexpected. What hap- pens when the next flood arrives? Or the next big wildfire? The next disaster might be something new and different, like a plane crash or an emergency at a local school. Caldwell is the new Emergency Management Director for Columbia County. She replaces Bill Peters, who left that position at the end of Novem- ber. "My job comes in four parts," she said. "Prepared- ness, mitigation, response and recovery." Caldwell's department...

The WHS student body took its annual ski trip last Thursday. I am told that they had quite the time. I didn't go with them. I am officially bored of the bunny hill, but the chairlifts scare me half to death. (I'm not afraid of heights, but heights without a seatbelt is another matter entirely.) So I, along with 32 other students, stayed behind at the school. We didn't even bother with normal classes. Instead, at the start of school, we were all called to the auditorium. A head count was conducted. (It didn't take too long, needless to say.)...
WAITSBURG - At 18 years old, Thibault Marti- nelle is already a seasoned traveler, having visited most of Europe, including France, England, Ireland, Turkey, Italy and Spain, as well as U.S. visits to Florida and Connecticut. Still, leav- ing his home in Waterloo, Belgium to spend the school year in Waitsburg as an ex- change student has been a "one-of-a-kind" experience. Waterloo, with a popula- tion roughly that of Walla Walla, is not a particu- larly large city, but sizeable enough that...

Fodder diversity? Yes, friend and organic-seed farmer Frank Morton, of "Wild Seed Farm," Oregon tells me, with the trend to eat clean, organic free-range chicken, his regional chicken ranch orders for organic Purslane and Chickweed seed has tripled in the past six months. Coming from a farming family, I understand how gratify- ing it is to live off the land and just how much work it really is. Today, while I might be heard speaking to a symposium of food writers with the theme, "trending the millennial," Frank Morton's information got me...
Chicago wheat futures prices have declined one dollar per bushel since January 22, from eight dollars down to seven. During the same period, Portland-delivered white wheat, our neighborhood specialty, has declined from about $8.62 to $8.45 - only 17 cents. The divergence between the two markets is more dramatic than normal, and can be attributed to a couple of factors. The Chicago soft red winter wheat market is much larger and more liquid than the white wheat market, making it attractive to larger entities such as large commercial firms that...
Duane Robert Gusse, age 69, passed away peacefully in his home in Olympia, Wash. on February 1. He was born to Byron and Florence Gusse on January 1, 1944 in Tacoma, Wash. He attended school in Waitsburg, where he dis- covered his talent and love for music and sports. While still in high school, he began his musical career playing keyboards and singing in popular local bands. He attended various colleges over the years including Central Washington University and Portland State University. While...

Like you, I am shocked and saddened by the mur- ders that have occurred in our country. The slaughter of innocent children in Newtown, Conn. still con- tinues to haunt me as my heart aches for the families of the victims. People suf- fering with mental illness are responsible for these horrific deaths, and no legislation will ever be able to prevent all of these atrocities. The state Legislature is carefully considering several approaches to ad- dressing gaps in our cur- rent laws that could help prevent some of these mass shootings. School...
Dear Editor: I am the President of the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Search & Res- cue. We have received several questions about a phone and mail solicitation by Search & Rescue Charities. Citizens have reported being pressured to contribute to this group. They were offended when they found it was not our local search & rescue group as implied in the phone call and mailed materials. Search & Rescue Charities donation requests are mailed from Olympia, asking that contributions be sent "lo- cally" to 1934 E. Isaacs, PMB230. From there, it is...
