Sunday was opening day for the 2015 trout fishing season, and hundreds of fishermen, fisherwomen, and fisherchildren flocked to the Tucannon River valley for the event. By sun-up, the banks of Spring Lake, Blue Lake (pictured here), Rainbow Lake, and points further south into the Blues were lined with patient guests quietly - and not so quietly - casting and reeling in their lines. At Rainbow Lake, most of the vacant sections of shore were still frozen over on this cold morning. By 9 a.m....

"Today's warrant is the result of hard work and d...
WAITSBURG – Last year's Waitsburg Celebration Days ATV Poker Run garnered a great deal of local interest and enthusiasm but had to be revamped to an in-town scavenger hunt at the last minute due to an inability to meet Walla Walla County ordinance requirements in a timely manner. This year organizers started the permit process in plenty of time and prospects are looking good. During their regular meeting on Feb. 23, the Walla Walla County Commissioners approved a new ordinance that will allow th...

Ten Years Ago March 10, 2005 Members of the Waitsburg City Council got a lesson in how congested Academy Street becomes during pick-up and drop off times at the Waitsburg School District. Transportation Supervisor Ken Colby, armed with video images of the bus loading area, gave graphic proof that parents delivering students to school perform some fairly outlandish maneuvers in doing so. Ed and Lena Fern Tusty’s family gathered recently to celebrate the couple’s 60th Wedding Anniversary. The Tustys are the parents of Pam Conover of Wai...

Here at The Times, we don't cover news from Walla Walla all that much, but an announcement Monday from that little village down the road got my attention. I'm old enough to remember Woodstock, and Walla Walla is going to get its version of that landmark music festival this summer. (Woodstock happened in 1969 on the weekend of my 14th birthday, and no, I wasn't there.) Exactly 46 years after Woodstock (again on the weekend of my birthday; you can do the math), as many as 40,000 people are...
By Cooper Inveen, Reporter WNPA Olympia News Bureau OLYMPIA - As Washington’s gray wolf population continues to grow, so do concerns of those living in the areas of the state most affected by their return. “There’s two sides to this issue, and it kind of boils down to either you like them or you don’t,” said Rep. Joel Kretz, R-Wauconda, who co-sponsored several wolf-related bills this session. Seven bills relating to Washington’s gray wolves have been introduced to the 2015 Legislature, with four surviving for continuing considerati...
Now that the Waitsburg Knowledge Bowl team knows that it’s state-bound, we’ve started planning like crazy for our trip to Seattle. We have an official t-shirt design mocked up, we’re picking places to visit for when we go into town, the hotel rooms are reserved, and the only question is whether to have dinner at The Crab Pot or Pike Street Fish Fry. In the meantime, we’ve been practicing up on our trivia. The Times writes a nice article every year about the local Knowledge Bowl teams, and the...
If you own wheat in storage right now, you are probably holding it because you think it will be more valuable later or because you want to minimize your taxes. Some may just get a warm feeling all over to think of it sitting in that bin; a valid incentive but difficult to account for in bookkeeping. There are other reasons, but there is no denying that it costs something to hold onto the stuff. Storage rates and interest costs on borrowed funds are the two most obvious holes in the bucket. Then there is the risk. “Market Risk” is the rea...
WAITSBURG – Eight Waitsburg High School musicians are preparing to perform with the Southeast Washington Music Educators’ High School Honor Band in Colfax on March 9. School officials are pleased to note that this is the largest group from Waitsburg to attend Honor Band in many years. The eight students who applied and were accepted to the prestigious group include Emily Adams (baritone horn), Korben Duffy (pe...
Paul Shaber Paul Shaber currently teaches high school math and science in Idaho at the Fruitland School District and has been there for 13 years. He recently earned his administrative credentials through the University of Idaho. He doesn't have a lot of administrative experience yet, he said, but he often substitutes for his current principal as needed. The principal at Fruitland High School, which has 460 students, told Dayton School Board that Shaber, "thinks outside the box to help students...
WAITSBURG – Is it a deck? Is it a stage? No, it's a massive display case! The Times (whose Waitsburg reporter happens to live next door to the Wilson-Phillips House) has kept a curious eye on the recent flurry of activity taking place in the backyard of the house/museum owned and operated by the Waitsburg Historical Society. It turns out the burgeoning structure will be a mini-house that will hold a scale model replica of Wait's Mill. The plan was to display the model inside the Wilson-Phillips...

The Lady Bulldogs finished with a 17-5 record for the season. The Lady Bulldogs fell behind early. Against a tenacious full-court press from the outset, Dayton couldn't get its offense going.
