  • Fire Districts Seek Levy for Ambulance Service

    Michele Smith, The Times|Mar 15, 2018

DAYTON—Columbia County is currently one of only four counties in the state without an emergency medical services levy. That could change if a proposed ambulance levy is approved by voters in August. The levy would add 50 cents per $1,000 assessed value to county property tax rates in 2019. The proposed levy would affect all property taxpayers in Columbia County, including those in Fire Districts 1, 2 and 3. Fire District 2 residents in Walla Walla County would not be affected. A supermajority of 60% yes votes is required to pass the levy. If p...

    Dena Martin, The Times|Mar 15, 2018

WAITSBURG – Unlike last year, the candidacy filing period for Waitsburg's annual elections closed on time this year, with a full slate of candidates. However, the council will look very much like last year, with the possible exception of mayor. And even that is a re-run, as incumbent Marty Dunn will once again run against former city council member Debra Callahan. The deadline for filing Declarations of Candidacy closed March 10 with all of the city council incumbents bidding to re-up their t...

  • The Future of Waitsburg Fairgrounds

    Mar 15, 2018

Randy Hinchliffe: city of Waitsburg After many years under lease by the Days of Real Sport, Inc., the city of Waitsburg took back control of the Waitsburg Fairgrounds facility in 2005. The city proceeded to annex the property into the city limits and set up rules and guidelines for the use of the facility. In addition, we attempted to keep up with the multitude of deferred maintenance items present at the facility as a means to make them more attractive and usable again. With the end of small track horse racing in Washington and the...

  • The Bright Colors of Suzi Vitulli's Art

    Mar 15, 2018

Carolyn Henderson: Talk about Art There is a tendency within a culture saturated with pop art imagery to go for shock value – the gritty – to extol a painting because it is edgy, disturbing, and unsettling. Such has been the "norm" for so long that people associate fine art with depression and anxiety. But if art is anything, it's versatile, and many talented painters opt to use their skills to promote the other side of the spectrum: happiness, hope, joy, and beauty. This aptly describes the wat...

"We're hoping that by making a space for kids to raise different species, more kids will be interested in joining 4-H and FFA," said Corral Wranglers 4-H leader Lisa Morrow. Morrow and Waitsburg High School FFA Advisor Nicole Abel will serve as the barn superi...

  • Lemon Souffle Cheesecake with Blueberry Topping

    The Times|Mar 15, 2018

I know, the directions look a bit overwhelming but once into it, it's not bad. If you are one who takes a quick glance and decides it's way more trouble than it looks, I get that. But if you love cheesecake (and I don't) than you will be in for a treat. That's right. I don't like cream cheese, sour cream or yogurt. Joe does and he really likes lemon flavored desserts, and I can honestly say I've never made a cheesecake from scratch so that is why I made it. In my notes, I'll tell you what I did differently. INGREDIENTS: 1 ¼ c. graham...
