  • Dena Wood: Out and About

    Mar 27, 2014

I spent a chunk of Wednesday afternoon lounging with friends and neighbors while snacking and enjoying an '80s soundtrack. I hung out with Randy Pearson, Veronica Deal, Brad Green and Colter Mohney, to list a few. Lest you think I'm name-dropping -- don't. You were all invited. The "party" was the annual Red Cross Blood Drive hosted by the WHS National Honor Society. NHS hosts the drive as one of their many acts of community service. Advisor Liv Leid said that the group set a goal of 38 u... Full story

  • Lady Tigers Win One in Pilot Rock

    Dena Wood, The Times|Mar 27, 2014

PILOT ROCK - The Lady Tigers softball team won one of three games played at the March 21-22 tournament in Pilot Rock. The Tigers faced Umatilla in Friday night's first game of the tournament, walking away with a 14-3 mercy-rule win. "We initially struggled with Umatilla's young pitcher because her speed isn't something we're used. It was hard for the girls to be patient at the plate and let the ball get to them. This game gave us a good opportunity to work on several things offensively. On t...

    Mar 27, 2014

Dear Editor, Phil and I want to thank both our faith communities and all the folks within the greater Touchet Valley for their concern and prayers of support for our daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Alister Torrens. They have been serving as missionaries in Kiev, Ukraine through International Theological Education Ministries (ITEM) and Mission to the World (MTW). They left Kiev Monday, March 17, and safely arrived in Kilrea, Northern Ireland the same day. They will reside there until the Ukraine national elections that take place May 25. T...

  • City Negotiates Shared Access Agreement

    Dena Wood, The Times|Mar 27, 2014

WAITSBURG – Waitsburg attorney Mike Hubbard recently worked with the City Attorney’s Office to draft a shared access agreement regarding the new tenant who has taken residence in the upstairs of Hubbard’s Main Street building. The agreement was presented to the council at last week’s meeting, and resulted in a motion to tighten the language and bring it back next month for a vote. Hubbard recently rented the top floor of the Hubbard Law Office building to an artist who plans to use the spac...

  • Fish Pond Ready for Season

    Ken Graham, The Times|Mar 27, 2014

DAYTON - The Juvenile fish pond in Dayton is ready for fishing this spring. According to Steve Martin of the Snake River Salmon Recovery Board, the pond in the Dayton City Park was stocked earlier this month with rainbow trout. It also receives hatchery steelhead diverted from the Touchet River. The pond is open for fishing by kids 16 and under and disabled adults. The pond is fed during the spring and early summer months by a feed pipe and pump system that brings fresh water from the a...

    Mar 27, 2014

[Editor's note: The following is an edited news release from the office of Washington Governor Jay Inslee, giving his perspective on this year's legislative session.] The 2014 Legislature adjourned late Thursday night, finishing its 60-day session on time and delivering important pieces of Gov. Jay Inslee's health care and education agendas to his desk. The Legislature approved several pieces of legislation and budget items to continue Washington's successful push to improve quality of health care delivered in the state and that will redu...

  • School Bond Too Expensive

    Mar 27, 2014

Dear Editor, Most people, regardless of whether they are retired or still working, are on a fixed income, because wages are not keeping up with what it takes to live. And wages in this area have never been particularly generous. So when private citizens express concern to the Dayton School Board about a 20 million dollar bond to modernize the Dayton school facilities, they are valid in their concerns: The overall cost of the project is beyond the ability of the community to bear. Let's do the math: if the bond passes, the resulting property...

  • Support for School Bond Encouraged

    Mar 27, 2014

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter to encourage voter support for the Dayton School District Campus Wide Improvement Bond. I have been on the facility committee that has met continually during the last year and feel the committee has effectively concluded the extensive project is needed. The process was painstaking and a great deal of thought and effort went into the planning. The Study and Survey done by engineers and architects identified the repairs that need to be done to the high school building which is 93 years old. The committee...

  • A Bit of Perspecitve

    Mar 27, 2014

Jazzy Latin music blared from the patio of some distant cafe as I dolefully chomped on a free sample from Godiva Chocolates. The overcast sky – and the wafting bit of bite on the edge of the breeze – did nothing to improve what seemed at the time like the worst day of my life. I don’t want to talk about Knowledge Bowl State this year. First of all, I’m trying to avoid writing a column about something that another article in this week’s paper might discuss. Second of all, it still hurts....

  • Graham: From the Editor

    Mar 27, 2014

Before I sat down last week to talk with Representative Terry Nealey about this year's legislative session in Olympia that ended a couple of weeks ago, I got on line to brush up on what happened. The big-city news analysts were not impressed. The Seattle Times accused the legislature of playing "chicken with citizens' safety, money and trust." The Spokesman Review was less harsh, but said of the legislature, "We do wish they'd been more ambitious." The Tacoma News Tribune put it s...
