WAITSBURG - After struggling to control rust in their wheat fields last spring, Touchet Valley farmers aren't taking any chances this year. Most, if not all, wheat growers in Prescott, Waitsburg and Dayton are mixing a fungicide like TILT or QUILT in with the herbicide they normally spray mostly through ground applications. We want to give a BIG thank you to the tree-cutting crew who came through town to trim trees for the power company. Their representative alerted us that they were coming, spent a lot of time discussing which branches were the problem and followed up on the day of the work. WP EARNS TOP TRACK SCORES CLARKSTON - The Waitsburg-Prescott men's track and field team took top marks at the District 9 meet here on Wednesday, March 23. Scoring a total of 118 points, the Cardinals out-competed second-place Asotin, with 96 points, and third-place Pomeroy, with 79. DAYTON - The weather finally cooperated for Touchet Valley's high school golfers last week. The Dayton and WP teams hosted Tri-Cities Prep, DeSales and Liberty Christian golfers here at the Touchet Valley Golf Course last Friday for the third match of the season. DAYTON - The Bulldogs are chomping at the bit. Cold, soggy weather has kept the Dayton baseball and softball teams indoors for most of the season so far. Both teams had planned to play double-headers against Pomeroy on Tuesday, but those matches had to be rescheduled because of the rain. PRESCOTT - After Saturday's doubleheader loss against Asotin, the Tigers were all too happy chalking up a 6-4 win Monday against Weston-McEwen. On Saturday, I headed out to Wally World; I had an appointment with two Walla Walla Sweet Onion growers. When I arrived, we walked the land. I asked questions and they answered them. It was all simpatico, until an unexpected gust of wind blew our hats off our heads. I ran after my leather fedora and the guys after their baseball caps. As we ran and jumped between rows of baby Sweet Onions, I lost a boot, sucked right off my foot by an angry furrow. One farmer held me up while the other fought to put my boot back on. The first full year we were in Waitsburg, we started a compost pile. We placed a countertop container by the kitchen sink and put everything we might normally put down the garbage disposal or in the trash can into this container: vegetable peels, coffee grounds, fruit cores, burnt toast, you name it.
