  • Editor’s note

    Apr 3, 2014

Next month, a group of business people from Goldendale, Wash. will come to Dayton to tour its beautiful downtown and talk to local officials and businesspeople about how they’ve been so successful in restoring and promoting downtown Dayton. Among other things, they’re going to learn about the restoration of the Columbia County Courthouse and the huge project undertaken to renovate Dayton’s Main Street. The Main Street Project, completed in the early ‘90s, was an expensive and disruptive job...

  • Property Taxes – by the Numbers

    The Times|Apr 3, 2014

DAYTON - If Dayton's school modernization tax levy passes later this month, property taxes in the Dayton School District are projected to increase by $2.53 per thousand dollar valuation. That means that the owner of a $100,000 home in Dayton would pay an additional $253 per year, or about $21 per month. In Dayton, combined school special levy tax rates in 2014 are $2.33 per thousand dollar valuation. (That includes the current M&O levy plus a capital technology bond.) If the bond levy passed and all other rates remained unchanged (they...

  • New Celebration Days Parade Event

    Dena Wood, The Times|Apr 3, 2014

Parade marshal nominations sought WAITSBURG - Celebration Days is just around the corner and this year's parade will include a new pre-parade event. A Kiddie Parade will light up Main Street at 9:30 a.m. on May 17 - followed by the traditional 10 a.m. Celebration Days Parade -- to kick off the weekend events. Because this year's parade once again falls on Armed Forces Day, "Celebrate America in Waitsburg" has been chosen as the theme. Young entrants are encouraged to decorate bikes, trik...

  • End of an Era at Aviary

    Dena Wood, The Times|Apr 3, 2014

WALLA WALLA - It’s difficult to think of Joanna Lanning without thinking of animals. The two just go together. Those who know her can affirm that truth. When Lanning is scheduled to lead the children’s message at church, the question is not what she will talk about, but what animal she’ll use to demonstrate her point. To say she is a favorite of the children is an understatement. As an animal enthusiast, nurturer and natural teacher, her work at the Pioneer Park Aviary in Walla Walla is perf...

  • Gary Hofer: Market Bullets

    Apr 3, 2014

"Know Thy Trend" is an ancient and still valid advice. If a trader of wheat identifies a trend using consistent criteria, he will be able to make decisions in harmony with the market instead of against the current. This does not guarantee profits, but it does help reduce the risk of major losses. Over time, most experienced marketers will tell you that if you can stay in a market and avoid the catastrophic error, "The Big Stupid Trade", you are more likely to survive long enough to get lucky. For my money, knowing the trend of a market is...

GARFIELD - The WP Tigers softball team consistently out-hit Gar-Pal in a March 27 double-header, but dropped both games by one. WP got off to a slow start in the first two innings of game one and made errors that allowed Gar-Pal to score early. Apr 3, 2014

"This is especially difficult at the high school level, and the band played very well," said Band Director Brad Green. The band played "Fanfare for a Celebration" and "Prairie Dance." Green said both are complicated songs with many solos. Seniors Meara Baker (flute) and Kimmie Hamann (trumpet) played important parts. "I was very proud and happy," said Green....

  • “An Evening In Disguise”

    Apr 3, 2014

This is my fourth column of the week. The first three shipped into Waitsburg as big boxes of perfectly flat Prom decorating supplies. They were made of white corrugated paper which my classmates and I cut into rectangles and taped together into the proper lengths. Then three of us would kneel in front of one of these lengths, holding big cardboard circles. We passed a hot glue gun on an extension cord from person to person. Each person would squirt a two-inch line of glue, roll their car...

  • Community Investment Pays Dividends

    Apr 3, 2014

Dear Editor, Hospitals, schools and municipal works are highly visible and important community assets that help to attract and retain families as they are a reflection of community values. Locally elected people oversee the expenses and operations of these local governments. Retaining students by providing services requires funding to perform routine operations and maintenance and then that once-in-a-while infusion of large dollars for major renovations or upgrades. It has been 30 years since the last renovation. The state recognizes the n...

  • Celebration Days Help Needed

    Apr 3, 2014

Dear Editor, Once again, there is a small group of people that are working hard to bring our Annual Celebration Days to our city on May 16-18, 2014. Historically, these events replace our Days of Real Sport weekend. The events traditionally highlight what a wonderful little city we are. We welcome visitors and family to share in our many events. And it has proven to be one of the most successful weekends for our businesses in our community. Here's the issues facing these volunteers attempting to pull the weekend together. #1: Volunteers a...

  • Dear Editor,

    Apr 3, 2014

I am writing this letter to encourage the citizens of the Dayton School District to support the Campus Wide Renovation project. As a member of the facility committee that presented the recommendation to the school board, we have reviewed all options extensively and have concluded the time has come to address the needs of our educational facilities. The high school was originally built in 1923 and had some remodeling done in 1984. The K-8 building was erected in the 1950's. The renovation will update outdated mechanical systems and will imp...

  • Vote Yes - for Future and Past

    Apr 3, 2014

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter to encourage voters in the Dayton School District to support the Campus Wide Improvement Plan. The citizens of Columbia County have a strong sense of community and a great appreciation for preserving our historic character. This was evident back in 1910 when Dr. Marcel Pietrzcyki left provisions in his will to provide land to the Dayton School District and to provide funding toward initial construction of the high school. The community has continually exhibited their community pride with reno...

  • Support of Public Schools is Wrong

    Apr 3, 2014

Dear Editor, Mandatory government education (also called public education) is not only collectivist, authoritarian, and unacceptable in a country that claims to be free. It is also inherently inefficient at education: 1. Public schools are not intended to educate -- from the public schools of the past: Prussia, National Socialist Germany, Soviet Russia, Maoist China, the socialist leaning governments of the early 20th century USA (Which forced Native American children into schools and punished them for speaking their own tongue), Bri...

    Apr 3, 2014

Dear Editor, Having served on the Facilities Committee for the Dayton School District, I can assure the voters of Columbia County that there isn't a question you've asked yourselves or your neighbors about this project that we did not ask ourselves over the months the Facilities Committee met. The committee, made up of business owners, parents of school-age children, community members, government representatives, and school staff, spent months analyzing drawings and layouts, looking at costs, talking to bond companies, comparing levy rates,...
