WAITSBURG - For the second year in a row, there won't be any horse racing in the Touchet Valley. In February, the Washington State Racing Commission asked our local tracks to submit the dates they would like to hold races, but neither Dayton nor Waitsburg put their names in, sources say. The board that organizes Dayton Days and the board that organizes Days of Real Sport cannot afford to host racing events this year because insurance costs have more than doubled from two years ago, said Terry...
In the last week, Chicago wheat September futures were violent, printing a high at $6.94 per bushel Monday, and promptly collapsing to $6.43 by Wednesday. Then Friday, upon the release of the latest USDA statistics, the price screamed up to $6.95. That is 51 cents per bushel down and 52 cents back up between Monday and Friday. Might as well call it "volatility!" New crop (August) white wheat prices at Portland were a bit less exciting, down 17 cents, then up 15 with a net loss of about 2 cents on the week to settle at about $6.70 per bushel. If...
Alma passed away March 14, 2012 at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia WA, just days before her 90th birthday. She was born on Mar 31, 1922 to Renalder and Clara Borgen in Baudette, Minnesota. Her grandparents were immigrants of Norway, which she was very proud of. After leaving home she taught school in a one room school house, displaying her love for children. Later she took an interest in sewing, which led her to take formal training in tailoring and dressmaking. She was a gifted seamstress. She later met Arthur Newbury in Davenport WA...
PASCO -- The WP Tigers improved to a 2-2 league record sweeping the Tri-City Prep Jaguars last Saturday afternoon. Zach Bartlow earned his second win of the season pitching for the Tigers, while Chris Manzano, Dalton Estes, David Herzog and Justin Zuger rattled the bats for multiple hits that led to a 23-5 victory in game one. "It was the best outing at the plate all season," said Tiger head coach Dustin Snediger. "Our bats have been struggling but we made some adjustments with the lin-up and found production." Estes earned his first win of...
MILTON-FREEWATER - WP and Dayton tracksters made gains and showed some great potential in the 1B/2B track meet at Shockman Field in Milton-Freewater, Ore., last Wednesday. It was Dayton's first meet of the season and the boys team placed sixth and the girls team placed eighth for the day. Dayton competed against track athletes from WP, McLoughlin, Asotin, DeSales, Pomeroy, TOR, WWVA, St. John Endicott and Garfield. The Bulldogs' coach Shawn McGee was right when at the beginning of the season he said his athletes will compete across events....
DAYTON - The Dayton softball team slid to an easy win last Wednesday against the Pomeroy Pirates, 23-2, in this single varsity game. "They struggled a lot with their pitching," said Bulldogs' assistant coach Desirae Jones. " They walked a lot and had wild pitches." In addition to leading the scoreboard, this easy game allowed Dayton to put in some of its younger players to give them some varsity experience on the field for a couple of innings, Jones said. Her softball players got to play in many different positions that day. And even though...
DAYTON -- The Dayton Bulldogs swept the Pomeroy Pirates last Tuesday afternoon in a nonleague baseball matchup, 13-3, and 16-6, last Tuesday afternoon. Bulldog Sophomore Lowden Smith took the mound for the Dogs in the opener striking out 11 batters while walking only three and allowing only three hits. He kicked off the day with striking out his first batter in just three pitches. Second baseman Ian Smay threw out the next batter after scooping up his grounder and Smith finished off the Pirates...
CLARKSTON - WP did it again last Friday and took first place overall in the District 9 1B/2B track meet in Clarkston. The women's team dropped one place from its meet the previous Wednesday to fourth. The sprinters had a tough day because it was so windy early on. But, obviously the WP team showed its speed and skills. The meet on Friday was another solid day for WP gals Kristin Potter and Ronnie Hulce. Hulce placed second in...
WAITSBURG - Ross Hamann was led to the Commercial Club meeting recently under false pretenses. Hamann was told his mother, Jan Kronkite, was again to receive the club's annual Community Service Award. But, as Tom Baker was describing the recipient, Hamann realized his mother hadn't been the force behind the new press box and isn't serving on the Waitsburg School Board. He does those things. Robbie Johnson, the club's president, said as Hamann realized that indeed, the person they were describing...

Dear Editor, Waitsburg's City Council deserves voter support for making a tough choice. Instead of adding $10 to the car license fee of all city residents to care for our streets they chose, instead, to put a tax increase to the vote of the citizens. That took guts. The very small (.001 or one cent per $10 purchase) increase in sales tax would actually cost residents less than the other option. Rather than only residents paying for street upkeep, it spreads the cost to others using them - visitors to Waitsburg. Those who come and enjoy what...
We are carrying a story this week in our paper that says horse racing will not return to the Touchet Valley for the second year in a row. In 2011, the races didn't come to the area because all of the racing dates were given to a track in Kennewick. This year, Dayton and Waitsburg didn't even ask for dates because the insurance premiums that protect the jockeys went skyhigh after some recent accidents and our Dayton Days and Days of Real Sport groups can't afford to bring the races back. Speaking with sources while gathering information for...
DAYTON - In the Dayton community, past residents have left a gift that continues to support our most crucial services -- health care and education. Dr. William Day and his wife Jessie left an income-generating, activated in 1973, that pays out thousands of dollars each year to the Dayton hospital and school district, according to Kevin Paulson, a manager in special asset management in farming and ranching for Bank of America. The Days set the trust up through their attorney. Farmland is the...
PRESCOTT - Two Prescott High School students spent their class time in Home Economics to sew dresses for needy children in Africa. Their teacher Susan De- Ruwe is part of the educational sorority Alpha Gamma, which provided $50 for materials and fabric if students spent their time on creating the dresses. DeRuwe said the dresses are very simple, made of fabric she purchased at St. Vincent De Paul or even pillow cases. Her two students Adriana Benito, 18, and Eva Esquivel, 16, made 10 dresses...
WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg City Council has a new council member, KC Kuykendall, after Monday's annual election. Results from the election were posted at Waitsburg City Hall and show that of the 320 ballots turned in, the council members didn't change much but for the spot vacated by former councilman Orville Branson. In the results, the most votes went to Kevin House, with 262, followed by Karl Newell, 245, Kuykendall, 243, Marty Dunn, 226 and Scott Nettles, 216. "I'm just really pleased to have...
