WAITSBURG – Plans are falling into place for Waitsburg’s fun-filled Celebration Days weekend, May 18-20. The Celebration Days Committee has been working all year to make this celebration the biggest and best yet. Celebration Days will once again take place on Armed Forces Day, with the theme “Celebrate Waitsburg, the American Way.” In addition to oldie-but-goodie events like the parade, Classic Car Show, Karen’s Ride ATV Poker Ride, the sunset cruise, brewfest, and plenty of music, food and dancing, this year’s event will feature some fun ne...
DAYTON— The Columbia County Commissioners have set a hearing to receive public comment about proposed changes to speed limits on some county roads. Public Works Director Andrew Woods said the proposal is for the speed limit on all primitive roads in the county, and some roads having steep grades, be set at 35 m.p.h. A reduced speed limit, from 40 m.p.h. to 35 on North Touchet Road, from the Dayton city limits to the South Touchet Road turnoff, is also proposed. Woods said that about 18 months ago, the commissioners were approached by a group of...
"It's the most contentious issue we've faced since I've been a commissioner, by far." That was Walla Walla County Commissioner Todd Kimball, talking about a proposed zoning change to allow water bottling facilities in agricultural-zoned land in the county. Commissioner Kimball and I met at The Times' office in Waitsburg last week to discuss that contentious issue, and why he and fellow commissioners Jim Johnson and Jim Duncan voted unanimously to allow the Walla Walla Planning Commission to...
1 Years Ago - April 10, 2008 Whatddya gotta do to be the Touchet Valley’s Top Farmhand? First contestants had to cram a hay bale into a too-right gap between other bales, the load and unload a nail gun. Next was to saddle a “horse” and rope a hay-bale doggie, followed by the bale toss. After that, contestants were to give their best critter call, then pitch a busted section of bob wire fence. Checking a chainsaw for correct chain installation and putting a link in a drive chain correctly followed. Clint Atteberry jumped into first place with...

Dear Editor, I am dismayed that “one of us,” the Doziers, would request permission to ship raw water out of our semi-arid area. Further, I am even more disappointed in our county commissioners for entertaining such a request. Our water should only be removed from our area in an added value state, such as farm or garden produce, not in tankers or bottles. Those of us who continually have to negotiate with state agencies to maintain our rights for irrigation water should find this bottled water request completely out of line and not be con...

DAYTON—In late March, the Columbia County Commissioners met with WSU Extension Agent Paul Carter, who presented 2017 annual report. “It’s a bleak picture,” Carter said about cuts to WSU’s budgets, and possible regionalization of extension agents. Columbia County could lose its local extension agent if regionalization of services is put in place by WSU, said Carter. In that case one agent could be serving several counties remotely, Carter said. He said that despite the uncertain future, “It has been a pretty good year. We focus on the needs o...
WAITSBURG – Just as the birds return to Capistrano each year, so do the flamingos return to Waitsburg. Except here in the ‘burg, they serve the purpose of raising funds for local FFA members to attend the State FFA Convention, to be held on the Washington State University campus in May. Flocking will begin after spring break. For $20, individuals can surprise a friend (or enemy!) with a festive flock of flamingos to adorn their front lawn. The flock will quietly migrate to another home the following evening. And for the Flamingo-phobic, ant...
We all need our vegetables. I love vegetable salads at potlucks, but I confess to rarely making them at home, probably because it would take forever to finish it. So most of my vegetables are eaten cooked or raw and plain. I make this salad a lot for potlucks. Most times I have very little left. It is a great combination of sweet and salty. For those who don’t eat bacon, I don’t believe it compromises the flavor. I had to do a search for this recipe as I’ll be darned if I can find mine. My recipe drawer is much like my recipe box—what got use...
