  • Waitsburg Council Election Tight

    Dena Wood, The Times|Apr 11, 2013

WAITSBURG - April 1 marked the voting deadline for the annual election of Waitsburg's mayor and city council. Walt Gobel ran unop- posed and was re-elected mayor, but the race for the fifth seat on the council is heated. Incumbents Martin Dunn, Kevin House, K.C. Kuykendall, and Karl Newell, all running on the "Truth and Trust" ticket, will be re-elected to their council positions. As of April 9th standings, Debra Callahan, who declared candidacy on March 8, will replace Scott Nettles, by a slim...

    The Times|Apr 11, 2013

BOARDMAN, Ore. - The WP Lady Tigers rolled over Riverside Tuesday night in a 14-2 victory that triggered the mercy rule in the sixth inning. "Everyone got into the game in some capacity," head coach Angie Potts said. "After having a week and a half off due to spring break, we played really well, hit the ball well, ran aggressively." Chelsey Brannock and Samantha Moss scored triples, while Katie Hofer pounded out a double and Heidi Miller, Samantha Fedderson, Jessica Foxe and Jadah Stansell each had singles. Jennifer Nichols had five...

  • Bulldogs Win Two More

    The Times|Apr 11, 2013

POMEROY - While the Lady Bulldogs varsity softball team was off Tuesday, the Bulldogs baseball team pounded out two wins against non-league opponent Pomeroy Tuesday. "They feel pretty good about themselves and it's fun to watch that," head coach Sal Benavides said. "Those kids are coming around." The Bulldogs are now 5-5 overall and 2-2 in league. In the Dayton boys' first game against the Pirates, the longest of the two at 2.5 hours, virtually all players' bats came alive, producing 16 hits and eight out of nine batters connecting with the bal...

  • Are We Going to Pot?

    Apr 11, 2013

Last week I sat down with Columbia County Prosecutor Rea Culwell to talk about mari- juana. Or, to be more precise, we talked about the new law legalizing small amounts of marijuana in Washington, and how it affects her job. It does so in a number of ways, she told me - includ- ing some I wouldn't have thought of. One of the effects I al- ready thought of was this: "I'm sure we'll see some in- crease in use among youth." Culwell said there was a slight uptick in youth mari- juana use after the...

  • BE MERRY

    Dena Wood, The Times|Apr 11, 2013

"April showers bring May flowers . . ." or, in our case (we hope) grass. You see, we had a bit of a lawn mishap last year. Attempting to ban our grass of clover, hubby inadvertently double-dosed the weed killer, and wiped out the entire lawn. While not pretty, a dead lawn does have some advantages. We saved a bundle on the water bill and mowing was a non- issue. See, every cloud really does have a silver lining. Now, new seed has been sown and we're enjoying the April showers, and, quite...

  • DRINK

    Larry Davidson, The Times|Apr 11, 2013

Welcome back to the second part of the Spring "what to drink now" wine column continuing the saga of "what do I drink now in this post-winter freeze period" where the easy choice is heavy reds. As promised in last month's installment where I blathered on about moving into the world of lighter-bodied reds, I'm now shifting towards the medium body aromatic whites. These wines are perfect for those optimistically warmer days of spring where the mornings are fresh and clean, the afternoons threaten some heat but do not quite get there and the...

  • EAT

    Larry Davidson, The Times|Apr 11, 2013

I love chicken. I just want that understood right from the get-go. Chicken is the most versatile meat on the planet, and while I know that point could be argued through time eternal please don't bother - my mind's made up on this point. You disagree? Take one minute to think about all the amazing attributes of the humble chicken that cannot be matched. White meat or dark meat, crispy skin or not - the birds' got you covered. Whether you like stews, bbq's, fried foods, roasts, stir-fry, sandwiches, braised dishes, pté's, sausages, soups and s...

  • Hide and Seek in the Touchet Valley

    Dena Wood, Out and About|Apr 11, 2013

Fun, frugal family activities that require minimal advance preparation are difficult to come by. Geocaching meets those requirements and more. My son received a GPS for Christmas two years ago and we've been hooked ever since. The Touchet Valley is filled with hundreds of caches requiring nothing more than a GPS to find, though a GPS enabled smart phone will get you by in a pinch. Not only will geocaching get you off the couch and into the great outdoors, it's gratifying and educational as...

The license is due annually by June 1 and the cost is $10 for altered and $30 for unaltered. Licenses can be purchased at City Hall, 147 Main Street, during regular business hours. • Of Fish, Food And More Food!

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Apr 11, 2013

WAITSBURG - Imagine a raised vegetable bed the size of a dinner table. Now picture growing enough greens in this 5' x 5' space to feed a family of four year round. Impossible? Not according to Waitsburg's Mickey and Tawnya Rich- ards. With their partners Ray and Debi Fosnot they have worked since December building their new business, "Lettuce Eat Fish". As long as you have the right ingredients - fish, fish feed, rocks, water, light and heat - you should be able to meet your leafy needs around...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    Apr 11, 2013

Ten Years Ago April 10, 2003 Waitsburg voters returned four incumbent City Coun- cil members to office and a former councilwoman edged out an incumbent, according to uncertified election results from Monday's Annual Election. The election, fueled by controversy surrounding the Coppei Avenue Project, the Main Street Overflow Project and a lawsuit challenging the legality of a second caucus, had the highest voter turnout in many years with voters giving a clear majority to the "For Waitsburg" Ticket. Treasurer Jean M. Hinchliffe was also re-...

  • CROPS

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Apr 11, 2013

Wheat chart measurements allow an upside target of between $7.50 and $7.80 per bushel over the next month or so in Chicago July (new crop) futures, although there are no currently visible fundamental factors that show the potential for much more than that. That makes the headroom in wheat prices rather tight, at about 40 to 70 cents per bushel; not much in light of recent volatile price behavior. The downside from current levels in July wheat is back to the April fool's day low at $6.64, just 50 cents away as this is being written. So it is...

  • Spring Break Haiku

    Emma Philbrook, The Times|Apr 11, 2013

Last week was one of those "Water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink" weeks in terms of column material. I was busy all week doing all kinds of fun things (it was Spring Break, after all), but all of the aforementioned fun things fall into one of three categories - A, not long enough to fill a whole column; B, too long to fill a column but not quite sus- penseful enough to serialize; and C, top-secret material not meant for civilian ears. So, expressly for your benefit, I have...

  • Honoring Tribes As Neighbors

    Apr 11, 2013

I t appears that an invi- tation from Waitsburg Mayor Walt Gobel to the Confederated Indian Tribes of the Umatilla Reserva- tion has been well received. Earlier this year, Gobel sent a letter to the tribes asking them to join the May 18 parade marking the 100th anniversary of the Days of Real Sport. According to the April edition of the Confederated Umatilla Journal, a group on the reservation is form- ing an all-volunteer parade contingent to prepare for the tribes' participation in the...
