WAITSBURG - The Matbirds have been busy the last two weekends - first hosting a Little Guy Wrestling Tournament in Waitsburg on April 5, then heading to the State Tournament in Spokane on April 12. The Waitsburg High School gymnasium was packed on April 5, when 310 wrestlers, along with friends and family filled the bleachers. "The tournament went great," said Coach Kari Newman. WAITSBURG - The rural roads of Walla Walla and Columbia Counties will again host hundreds of competitive cyclists this weekend during the 18th annual Tour of Walla Walla Bicycle race. Races will start and finish at Waitsburg on Friday afternoon and Sunday. WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg Celebration Days Committee will be running a Duck Derby on May 17. Ducks will race down the Touchet River beginning at the Preston Avenue bridge and ending at the Main Street bridge. Ducks may be purchased for $5 each and the owner of the fastest duck will take home $500. Second place receives $250, third takes $100 and fourth place wins $50. WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg Celebration Days committee is hard at work making sure that next month's weekend celebration is a success. New events include an ATV Poker Run on Saturday and a Lawn Mower Obstacle Course on Sunday. A Kiddie Parade will precede the traditional Saturday morning parade, with all the young entrants receiving ribbons. DAYTON - Kids in Dayton will descend on the City Park Saturday morning for the annual Easter Egg Hunt. The hunt starts at 11 a.m. Organizer Judi Brooks said that the hunt is open to toddlers through sixth grade. Prizes will be awarded by age group to the kids finding the golden eggs. I couldn't believe the fabulous deal I found for our Spring Break vacation. It was a brandspankin' new, top-rated, 3-star hotel within walking distance of Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane. The town of Darrington, Wash. sits in a beautiful spot in the Stilliguamish River Valley in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, northeast of Seattle. Its population is roughly the same as Waitsburg's. When a giant landslide wiped out a small community called Oso just down the road, Darrington became a town in crisis. TOUCHET VALLEY - The Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program recruiting volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children Walla Walla and Columbia counties. On April 22-23, 137 pinwheels will be placed on the Walla Walla County Courthouse lawn to represent each child in need. Volunteers must take 30 hours of training, provided at no cost.
