  • Cottages Add To Waitsburg Lodging

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Apr 28, 2011

WAITSBURG - The Walla Walla area is growing in popularity as a wine destination, and some weekends, travelers can't find a place to stay in town. With the price of gas going up and the value of the Euro high, people in Seattle and Portland are choosing vacations closer to home over a tasty tour of wine regions overseas. And finally, Waitsburg has a growing reputation as a wonderful small town to spend a weekend in the country, but accommodations here are still few and far between. Wine critic...

Built in the 1870s, a final record of the structure before it meets the wrecking ball, for the part it played in our town's history was not trivial and is worth being remembered. Waitsburg's American Legion Post No. 38 hosted the 12th District Spring Celebration at Ye Towne Hall. Nichole and Rhonda Eastwood proudly display the medals they won in the 2001 Special Olympics Regional Finals held in Spokane. The girls are the da...

  • Tragedy Leads To Tipsy Taxi

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Apr 28, 2011

WAITSBURG - Shannon Elliot was living a typical American lifestyle. She worked two jobs to make ends meet and spent her free time with friends and family. She enjoyed NASCAR races with her father, playtime with her nieces and nephews, and high school pillow talk with her sisters. In high school, Shannon played volleyball in Waitsburg, couldn't get enough of softball, and she was a cheerleader. Her friends enjoyed her carefree, loving personality and huge smile. She was the All-American girl....

STATE OF ECONOMY FOLLOW-UP DAYTON -Dayton's retail sales per capita are dismal - the lowest in the region; farm profits have declined severely, eliminating disposal income that used to be spent in local communities. So what are we doing about the economic woes that our community faces? That is a question the Port of Columbia, the Dayton Chamber of Commerce, and the SouthEast Washington Economic Development Association (SEWEDA) will offer an answer to at a State of the Columbia County Economy follow-up session Wednesday, April 27, at 7 p.m. in...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Apr 28, 2011

Dear Editor: Let ' s set the recor d straight. Mayor Walt Gobel has always, his entire adult life, been involved in youth activities. His idea of having a student representative on the city council was an idea that he has worked on developing since his election in 2010. He contacted the school officials and has worked on this idea, setting policy and researching it since 2010. His idea has not been pushed forward because Mr. Baxter wanted to get more youth involved in our community. The swearing in of a student representative last Wednesday...

  • It’s All In A Name

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Apr 28, 2011

For those of our readers who paid attention, you already spotted the "soft" unveiling of the name for our planned new coffee shop on Waitsburg's Main Street. You would have seen it in the first-ever Touchet River Valley visitors guide we released in collaboration with the Blue Mountain News earlier this month. It was in the form of a "Coming This Summer" ad in the guide's dining section. But we'll give you the real scoop about its origin here, or at least the reasons why we chose the name....

  • Looking For Heart

    Apr 28, 2011

I t's all about heart. We continue to be encouraged by the community service projects initiated by the young people of our valley. Managing Editor Dian McClurg wrote a HeartBeat column earlier this month about the Draw the Line project led by Dayton High School junior Nicole Lambert, intended to keep kids and adults off alcohol. Last week, we ran a story about Waitsburg High School junior Fletcher Baker joining the Waitsburg City Council as a youth representative (incidentally, we'd like to underscore that this was an initiative of Mayor Walt...

  • Hermanns Could Face Years In Prison

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Apr 28, 2011

WALLA WALLA - Waitsburg resident Adam Hermanns could face many years in prison based on new and existing charges brought against the 23-year-old man in Walla Walla County this month. Hermanns, who was charged mid-April with three felonies that allegedly took place in January, was implicated late last week in five additional felony cases reported just this spring in College Place. The new charges brought against Hermanns and alleged accomplice Antonia Contreras, 24, of Walla Walla, include robbery and burglary, both first-degree, class A...

  • Wheat To Biscuits

    Paul Gregutt, Guest Column|Apr 28, 2011

I found the following "World Today" article listed on eBay, and I thought it was especially remarkable because Karen and I have talked about how interesting it would be if someone created a line of Waitsburgdesignated wheat products. Much as the best wines are often bottled under the specific name of the vineyard, we envision a similar use for this area's excellent wheat. A made-and-grown-in- Waitsburg concept for flour from different types of local wheat, for example. So when I saw this story,...
