WAITSBURG - Volun- teers from the Waitsburg Historical Society have spent recent weeks at the Wilson-Phillips house, bus- ily readying it for the upcoming Waitsburg Celebra- tion Days. The home was purchased in 2008 by Mary Phillips, who made significant im- provements, including new paint, a roof replacement and repairing and re-routing broken sewer lines prior to renting it out for a brief time. In 2011 Phillips donated the home to the Waitsburg His- torical Society. The Society faced con-...

WAITSBURG - Cowgirl Ranch Racing is the signature event this year for Waitsburg's Celebration Days, May 17-May 19 in Waitsburg. The City of Waitsburg, local Commercial Club and Blue Mountain RC&D Council plus many volunteers are finalizing events for a weekend of family fun and a celebration of horses. Cowgirl ranch racing begins at 1 pm on Saturday, May 18 (it's going to BLAST!) running until 4 pm. Waitsburg Celebration Days is just around the corner. With a parade, antique car show, cowgirl ranch racing, fair- way games, dances and more, the weekend promises the most excitement our little burg has seen in some time. Yet there's one concern I've heard expressed more than once and it's nothing to take lightly. "What about food?" Good question. It's nigh impossible to have a bona fide celebration without some good food. (Perhaps I should say "grub" and "fixin's", to keep with the western...
We've all been there at one point or another. You're out with friends having a good time and there's always that person who doesn't know when to stop talking, when the internal filter needs to be turned to 11. Sometimes this happens after work on a Friday afternoon unwinding after the week of work has been relegated to the "I don't care" corner. Normally these incidences are benign, leading to some humor- ous recaps later on. Then there are those special events that lead some folks down the path of ruin, where verbal faux pas seems to...
When I started this column about 8 month ago I wanted to showcase, from time to time, something extraordinary, something special, that is the result of the passion of our regional chefs. I wanted my first offer- ing to showcase the amazing dishes I found but we decided to focus on hyper-local and talk about Waitsburg first just to establish the column. I think now that enough time has passed that I can cast the net a little wider and welcome a treat that is just down the road into the mix. Pastrami! This is not some pathetic excuse for...
PASCO - After their Monday night tie-breaker win over St. John-Endicott/ LaCrosse-Washtucna 8-5, the Dayton Bulldogs seemed ready to take on TriCities Prep Tuesday but "shot themselves in the foot" with errors, head coach Sal Benavides said after the game. "We weren't mentally ready," he said. "I thought we were. But we just didn't get it done today." The 10-1 loss was a disappointment to the young team. But the players, who nonetheless made it to the playoffs despite the odds, felt they l... Full story

COLFAX - James Thompkins won the 100, 200 and 400 meter races and anchored the winning 4 x 100 relay team, as WP overwhelmed the competition at the NE 1B/2B League Meet in Colfax April 30. WP scored 151.5 points, ahead of a distant Colfax, with 92.5 points in second. James Thompkins is coming off a sprained ankle and shined with four first places," said WP Coach Jeff Bartlow. PRESCOTT - Waitsburg Prescott ended its promising season Tuesday after a 7-4 loss against Takeo-Oakesdale Rosalia in a game that almost turned into a Tigers' come-from-behind classic. The Nighthawks scored in the top of the 1st inning and Dalton Estes answered it with a run of his own in the bottom. But the WP bats went quiet after that, while TOR scored another run in the...
DAYTON - Getting all the fundamentals right from the start, the Lady Bulldogs beat TriCities Prep 13-3 in a five-inning home game Tuesday and advanced to the regional playoffs in Spokane on May 18. The third-ranked Dayton softball team still faces second-ranked Waitsburg Prescott on Friday, but only to decide seeding for the next round of the playoffs, assistant coach Des Jones said. Under the hot afternoon sun, Sam Harting pounded out a two-run homer in the first inning that ignited the...

DAYTON - When a Town Hall Meeting was held in Dayton in the spring of 1983, a number of well-intentioned suggestions were made to help bring new life to Dayton's tired downtown. Bill Graham, who had re- cently arrived in town as the new pastor of the First Con- gregational Church, raised his hand and suggested that a complete renovation of the Columbia Courthouse might be just the ticket to beautify the city's center. Many people at the meet- ing, and around Dayton, questioned whether that was a... Full story

This year's spring release showed the newest wine releases from regional wineries. Tasting rooms were packed all weekend with enthusiasts from around the world. News traveled fast about a new winery and its maiden vintages, putting winos in a tizzy to get a taste of the new wines. At one point while delivering Pate Fromage Confit from the catering kitchen of Moveable Feasts! I tasted these new wineries' wines and will get back to one in particular later in the column. I remember walking away from the tasting thinking, "an- other great wine...
Wheat Outright Trading Rule #1: Always know the trend. WTR Rule #2: Hold or establish no posi- tion against the trend. WTR Rule #3: If no trend is identified, wait. The above rules apply to identified trends; that is, trends that a given trader has identified with confidence. Even a ca- sual observation by someone with little experience can yield a fairly powerful impression of trending tendencies. It's simple; just print out a current price chart of whatever is to be considered (here Chicago July wheat futures), prefer- ably one that includes... Full story
