    Behind every bunch of good men, you're sure to find a bunch of good women! At right are some of the ladies that pitched in to help make a successful Waitsburg's Annual Lions Club Rib Feed held last Saturday evening in the Don Thomas Building at the Waitsburg Fairgrounds. Club Treasurer Kevin House said the group raises approximately $15,000 each year, that is used to meet needs right here, in the community. See more photos on Last Page....

    DAYTON – The Dayton School District has hired a K-12 school counselor, to start next fall. Susan Stege is a certified school counselor with experience in individual and group counseling, and in working with parents. Stege graduated from the University of Oregon, and Portland State University. She also holds a teaching certificate in Art.     DAYTON – Filing for 2017 elections in Columbia and Walla Walla Counties will open next week. Positions are open for Dayton and Starbuck city councils, Dayton, Waitsburg and Starbuck school boards, local fire districts, Columbia County Hospital District and the Port of Columbia. Candidates may file at the appropriate county auditor’s office from Monday through Friday next week.     Margie Goddard Burns, of Dayton, passed away on April 23, 2017 at the age of 74 years. Margie was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 19, 1942. Margie moved to Wilbur, WA, in 1974 and raised her three children there. She held many jobs: waitress, cook, assistant to a CPA, church secretary, carpenter. She loved to fish and camp with her children and friends. Margie moved to Walla Walla in 1985 and worked in various nursing homes and as a caregiver. In 2008, Margie moved to Dayton.     Gladys Lee Crabb Ferguson was born October 10, 1929, in St.John, Washington to Bernard Vincent Crabb and Minnie Melissa Bell Billingsly Crabb. She was the sixth of eight children. She moved to Starbuck, Washington as an infant and attended Starbuck schools. Gladys married Richard J. Ferguson, from Missouri, on November 20, 1947. Richard and Gladys moved to Bertha, Missouri where their son, Rick was born. They returned to Columbia County and lived on farms in the Fields Gulch and Alto areas.
