-LESS-THAN-0096-Author's note: Current Times publisher Imbert Matthee asked me to pen a few words about the Days of Real Sport since this does appear to be the 100th anniversary of the event. My perspective is mainly from the point of view of our participation in producing the programs for each year's races and how that changed over the years.-GREATER-THAN-0096- O rin Walker, a former county commissioner and local historian, explained to me where the title of the meet came from. WALLA WALLA - After their narrow 10-9 loss against district title winner WP Friday, the Lady Bulldogs could have hung their heads. They did come out a bit sluggish in the next game against Asotin and by the sixth inning, they were down 5-2. But they rallied when it was their turn in the sixth. When the game was tied in the bottom of the seventh and it was make or break, the Dayton girls' bats came through as well as their spirit. With some additional help from Asotin errors, Dayton won the...
WALLA WALLA - If there was one moment that sparked the WP Lady Tigers' momentum Friday, it was Sam Moss' catch on the fence in the third inning that shielded them against a third Dayton home run and marked the beginning of her team's comeback against the Bulldogs. Already behind 8- 0 against a Dayton team that obviously came to play, it was exactly the kind of catch the Tigers needed to retrieve their passion, find their groove and settle into the game. Moss caught the hit, then fell back...

What's the difference between a Maze and a Labyrinth? A garden maze is a touring puzzle of complex paths full of twists and turns that makes it hard to find an exit as in the movie "The Shinning." The Labyrinth is a single twisting path that provides a clear path to the center and back out. The tradition of the Labyrinth extends back to ancient Greece and Egypt. In Europe's Middle Ages, walking a labyrinth on a cathedral floor signified a pilgrimage to find God and salvation. Recently, the labyrinth has been revived as a focused walking...
I n 1972, 41 years ago, the front month futures traded in Chicago wheat reached a high of $2.73 per bushel, considered then an extremely high price. The low that year had been $1.41. The lid finally came off the next year when the then USSR kicked off "The Age of Volatility" with huge wheat buying for import. Wheat reached prices in 1973 that no one had ever seen before, with highs over $5.50 per bushel. It was wonderful for producers, if they managed to keep their wits about them amid the flood of money! Many new combines were purchased, but...
WAITSBURG - Long before the Lewis & Clark expedition made its way through the Touchet River Valley in the early 1800s, the site of the state park named in their honor was a fall hunting camp for the Palus, Nez Perce and Walla Walla tribes. This place between Waitsburg and Dayton was called Tapash Itxachika, where the tribes said "the ponderosa pine tree fell and was raised again." And the river was called Tu-se, meaning roasting. It's one of the closest Native American historical references to...

We've added some additional history from later issues of The Times.] T he first race course at Waitsburg was laid off between 1865-1870, located on the westers outskirts of town. It was a straight track, approximately one-half mile in length, running north and south from what is now the Pasco Highway to the base of the hill...

Dear Editor, My mother, Bettie Chase, believed that the best people on earth had roots in the Touchet Valley. And she believed you had an extra dose of good sense if you picked Waitsburg as your home (especially if you came from someplace foreign like Seattle or California.) It turns out that, as usual, she was right. My family and I are so grateful for the exceptional concern, consideration and respect mother received. She always felt safe and secure in Waitsburg because you all showed her how much you cared. Heartfelt thanks goes to all of...
A s this is apparently the special Days of Real Sport historical issue, I thought I'd share a few personal memories of the event. Last year was my first year on the Columbia County Fair Court, and the Days of Real Sport parade was our first parade of the year. The float had been lavishly decked out through many hours of meticulous labor. It depicted, among other things: the harvest moon, a giant treasure chest, a waterfall, a river, baskets of flowers and fruit, and a red barn with a quilt for a roof. It was a nice float. In fact, it took first...
I f you've been around the Waitsburg elementary school lately, you may have seen kids doing something a bit unusual. They're walking laps around the playground. No, this isn't a form of punishment. It's not even intended strictly as exercise, though that never hurts. The kids, who complete three to five laps around their beloved recess hangout, are making a point about the distance many kids in other parts of the world have to travel every day to find safe drinking water and they want you to...
Sometimes, it's all in a name or a date. But in this case, we'd like to look beyond mere words or points in time. When it comes to this weekend's centennial, we want to focus on its spirit as a lasting legacy, whatever form this third-weekend-in-May tradition in our little town will turn into after marking its first 100 years. Both the name of the centennial and its origins are a bit controversial. Local historian Jeff Broom has been bemused by the number of references to the Days of Real Sport or what preceded in documented history. Here is...
PRESCOTT - The city of Prescott has selected Steven Heimbigner as its new mayor. The decision was made at the last city council meeting, which took place April 8. He majored in business and began teaching business classes at Prescott High School in 1971. He also taught computer applications and journalism, even taking up the position of yearbook advisor....
