  • “It Kept Going And Going And Going”

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 25, 2011

DAYTON - It was a bright day in early August. The National Guard helicopter hovered several hundred feet above the canyons in the Eckler Mountain area of the Umatilla National Forest when the spotter in the cockpit first noticed the pattern on the steep hill: a terraced slope with carefully spaced plants of a slightly darker color than the surrounding vegetation. It was just the beginning. Upon closer inspection, the spotter noticed more "grows" spread out along hundreds of yards on two...

  • Julie’s Junior Miss Legacy

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 25, 2011

COLLEGE PLACE - It has been 43 years since 17-year-old Julie Stonecipher, a farmer's daughter from Waitsburg, won the Washington State American Junior Miss competition and was runner-up at the national American Junior Miss competition. The Touchet Valley held parades in her honor, signs bearing her name sat at the entrances to Waitsburg and she even received a key to the city of Walla Walla. After many years away from the largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls,...

  • Dayton’s New Mother-Daughter Healing Team

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 25, 2011

DAYTON - A mother-daughter duo in Dayton specializing in acupuncture and massage therapy is offering services at a variety of prices to make sure low-income members of the community can obtain the preventative medicine and therapy they need. "Why should our services be exclusive to high-income people?" asks Tyhra Owen, 30, who practices massage therapy at Day Escape Spa in Dayton. Owen and her mother, Denise Lane, 49, an acupuncturist, joined the Day Escape Spa team in July. Both women recently...

  • La Monarca’s First Restaurant In Waitsburg

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 25, 2011

WAITSBURG - Any Mexican food lover in the Walla Walla area knows the food the Reyes family puts out: authentic yet innovative Mexican fare. They may have never heard of Jose Reyes or his wife, Maria Espinoza, but the name of their Taco Wagons, La Monarca, will ring a bell. The wagons on Isaacs at East Gate and on Rose downtown, have been popular in Walla Walla for years, garnering the family Best Of The Best recognition under the Taco Wagon category for years, trading places with El Taco Loco....

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Aug 25, 2011

This past Saturday, I attended the opening of the long awaited Mace Mead Works in downtown Dayton. Upon entering the facility, you'll pass the glassed-in cellar room, racked in oak wine barrels. At first, I thought this was mead wine, but later found owner Reggie Mace' sucking up barrel tasting from his maiden red wine collection, listed on the brochure from his second label; The Mortal Vintner. This collection includes three rich reds, all 100 percent pure andunique,winesnamedcrazy-young,justlikeownerandwinemaker ReggieMace...

Students and community members descended on the new Waitsburg High School last Saturday to help move furniture and equipment into the refurbished school. Students and construction workers will mix in the coming weeks to finish construction in the vo-ag building and the gym. Logging of diseased trees from the Waitsburg Watershed continued this week. STATE FUNDING DROPS DAYTON - Columbia County and the city of Dayton will not receive as much money through the state's local government financial assistance program as initially indicated. The state is not providing as much money as in past years to the program and the figures are calculated based on how much real estate tax is collected in the county, said Columbia County Treasurer Audrey McLean. The county will receive about $150,000 less than expected, and Dayton will receive $9,600 less than anticipated. McLean said the money benefits the c...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Aug 25, 2011

Dear Editor: I have been a subscriber to the Times since we bought our house in Walla Walla over a year ago. We love your town; it just didn't work for our situation to live there instead of here. However, I greatly admire the advances you have made in covering local news. Folks like the wheat farmers get way too little recognition for their hard work and commitment, and the past few issues of the Times have highlighted their ongoing efforts. It was interesting to me to read numerous articles about neighbors helping each other in a variety of...

  • Wowed By Waitsburg

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 25, 2011

Heart BEAT WAITSBURG - The first thing you see is a pan of the wheat fields, followed by a drive through town: the stately early-century homes, campus-like sidewalks and the downtown Main Street core. Then suddenly, Paul Gregutt and Karen Stanton Gregutt are greeting you from the kitchen aisle of their new Three Maples Cottage on Third and West. "You," that is, if you happened to be among the hundreds of guests attending the Auction of Washington Wines' Gala at Chateau Ste. Michelle in...

  • Curtain? What Curtain?

    Aug 25, 2011

Last week, we carried a story about the KUOW series on the "Cascade Curtain," the idea that the state and its residents are somehow culturally divided by the mountain range that separates them geographically. We found it interesting how the story about Waitsburg made it sound like our town is somehow a prime example of East Meeting West in a contest of visions and wills over the future of our community. The local reactions to the radio segment, which can be heard and read online at KUOW.org, were equally interesting. Some thought it was fair...

WALLA WALLA - Dayton resident Melvin Bohleen, 73, is scheduled to appear in Walla Walla Superior Court Sept. 12 for charges relating to a vehicle-and-bicycle collision that killed a Seattle woman on May 21 on Middle Waitsburg Road. Bohleen was charged Friday with vehicular homicide, a class A felony, that could carry a sentence of life in prison, a fine of $50,000 or both if he is found guilty. Prosecuting Attorney James Nagle filed a report of an investigation by the sheriff's office and argues that Bohleen operated a motor vehicle that...

  • Withers Aces Navy School

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 25, 2011

WAITSBURG - It was never Wyatt Withers' sole inspiration for going in the Navy, but once he had decided to join it certainly helped having a grandfather who had served in the same branch many decades ago. Choosing to be "seasick over digging a fox hole," longtime local farmer Jack McCaw went to amphibian training school in preparation of the Allied invasion of Japan when the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He became part of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's occupation force in Japan...
