WAITSBURG - Nineteen members of the Waitsburg High School FFA Chapter competed at the state level at the 84th Washington FFA Convention in Spokane on May 15-17. Several teams and individuals won awards and the Chapter walked away with a $5,000 check for placing first in the "Nutrients for Life Helping Communities Grow" competition. DAYTON - Spectators are invited to come and enjoy a new event in Dayton: a Barrel Racers National 4D meet. Barrel races will be held starting at 1 p.m. Saturday in the arena at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. MOSCOW, Ida. - Dayton's Kaitlyn Andrews will compete in four events this weekend in the State 2B Championship Track and Field Meet in Cheney. Andrews won both the javelin and long jump events at the 2B District 9 Championships here last week. She also took second in both the 100 meters and triple jump. MOSCOW, Ida. - Owen Lanning continued his dominance of the 300 meter hurdles for WP as he won the event at the 2B District 9 Championships here last weekend. He also took second in the 110 hurdles and the triple jump and ran the anchor leg second place 4X100 relay team. DAYTON - The Dayton School District will again offer the Simplified Summer Food Program for Children this summer. Meals are available at no charge for children 18 and under. The program will be offered each weekday from June 16 through August 1, except July 4. Meals will be served at the Dayton School Cafeteria at 302 E. DAYTON - The Columbia County Health System is considering a significant reconfiguration of the Dayton General Hospital building. In a press release issued last week, interim CEO John Smiley said that the Columbia County Hospital District Board of Directors tentatively plans to seek voter approval in November for a bond levy to provide funds for the project. DAYTON - The Columbia County Commissioners met last week with horse owners who rent stalls at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. The county previously informed horse owners that stall rentals and use of the horse facilities at the fairgrounds would be closed to them over the summer months because of the many events that take place there. DAYTON - The Dayton Elementary School will introduce new multi-age classes next year, putting 2nd and 3rd graders into combined classes and 4th and 5th graders also into combined classes. The school's principal, Pam Lindsley, announced the changes earlier this month. Lindsley said that the new class configuration allows class sizes to remain low while making efficient use of teaching staff. WAITSBURG - Waitsburg Elementary School students will soon spend their recesses "Walking for Water". This will be the second year that elementary students have participated in the program that raises funds to provide safe drinking water for the needy. Last year , students walked three days a week and raised $555, which funded a rainwater catchment and storage system for a school of 398 students in Kenya. This year, students hope to raise enough funds to purchase a Sawyer filter for a community in Guatamela....

Columbia Pulp is moving ahead with plans for its new plant near Starbuck. There, the firm will take wheat and alfalfa straw and turn it into pulp, which will be used to make paper products. The company hopes to begin operations by the end of the wheat harvest in 2015, and they plan to hire around 130 employees to run the facility.
