YAKIMA - There are two ways to look at the outcome of the state softball tournament for the WP Tigers: they went further than last year and ended up in the top 12, but they also traveled all the way to Yakima to get knocked out of contention by league rival DeSales. Despite high hopes that they could repeat their narrow upset of the Irish during the district playoffs, the Tigers went down against the Walla Walla team 5-1 on Sunday before the Irish themselves were rolled from the tourney by... YAKIMA - It wasn't a championship game, but it felt like one. Up against the team that ended up winning the 2B title, the Dayton softball team's tenacity pushed the Saturday evening game against Toutle Lake into extra innings. It wasn't until the 9th that the Ducks finally pierced the Bulldogs' defense and broke the tie in what home spectators described as one of the best games of the state tournament. In the end, Dayton went down 5-1 against Toutle Lake but won against Asotin on Sunday b...

Andrews is shown at left, throwing the javelin during a meet in Dayton in April. (Times file p...
CHENEY - Eight members of the WP boys track team traveled to the state 2B track meet here Friday and Saturday. They left with the third-place trophy, coming in a point shy of second place La Conner. As he's done in every 2B meet in which he's been healthy, Junior James Thompkins dominated the sprints. He won the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes and anchored the winning 4x100 relay team. Those four wins accounted for 40 of WP's 57 team points. The relay team also included DJ Leroue, Brendon D... Full story

"People look at me like I'm crazy, but I think it's important to stay posi- tive and upbeat as much as possible." says Hays. "With so many people asking how I'm doing every day, it's not as if I can put it out of my mind." Hays is on a mission to eradicate the tumor that has lodged...

Ten Years Ago May 29, 2003 Two Waitsburg Cardinals are headed to the Class B state track meet and several others came agonizingly close - with- in inches or tenths of a second of making the trip. Sophomore high jumper Matt Baker cleared 5-10 without scratching to take first place in District 9 and earn a second consecutive appearance in the WIAA State B Track Meet held at Eastern Washington University in Cheney May 29-31. Freshman high jumper Natasha Montgomery qualified for state, also as number one out of District 9, by clearing 4-10 at the...
My backyard habitat is packet with nectar-rich flow- ering plants inviting butterflies of all kinds. This small lush space has inspired my community to join in on the fun of catering to wildlife. Take my neighbor, who appears to be Neanderthal but who loves butterflies; he's given way to lining his driveway with flowering annuals for the whole neighborhood to enjoy. Whether in a pot or garden floor, here's a list of showy annuals you may or may not be familiar with and are tops at supplying months of nectar and flowers for our winged friends: F...
A s trade decision-makers, human beings are not gener- ally wired to be patient when a market (or anything else) takes longer than 60 to 90 days to move. The Chicago wheat July (new crop) futures contract has not trend- ed out of an 82-cent band between $7.41 and $6.59 since February 12, well over 100 calendar days and well beyond the capacity of most of us to be patient. The general slope of the period within this horizon-less Sargasso market is gently lower, although there was a two- day period of violence during which the market traded both... Full story

A while ago, I wrote a column about the gardens that my brother, cousin, and I were trying to grow. Now, I figure it's high time for an update. I started all of my seedlings a good distance from Waitsburg's average date of last frost, April 27. Eventually, I had produced two cherry tomato plants - a bonus, since I only needed to plant one. Three of my four pepper seeds sprouted - good, as that was the exact number I needed to plant. I sowed a couple rows of carrots on April 6, hoping against hop...
Every spring, the Touchet River Valley awakens. What lies dormant for months in winter, suddenly explodes with green life fed by rains and the welcome sun in skies blue to heaven. Everything stirs and moves and grows in this fertile soil that yields a bounty every year. It has been this way ever since the Palus Indians roamed these hills and fields, harvesting roots such as quamash, camas, kouse, bitterroots, chokeberry, huckleberry, gooseberries, rose berries and whortleberries, just to name a...
I n the fall of 2011, teams from Waitsburg-Prescott brought home two state championships - in soccer and football. While that success in team sports wasn't repeated dur- ing this school year, student-athletes from WP and Day- ton turned in many strong performances, and all of us in the Touchet Valley should be very proud of them. On Saturday, Jubilee student James Thompkins won three individual events at the state 2B track meet in Cheney - In the 100, 200 and 400 meter sprints. He also took a fourth victory, anchoring WP's winning 4x100 relay...
