Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just “clip” that tidbit and store it in a virtual folder to be accessed from any computer or mobile device? With Evernote, you absolutely can, and it’s free,...
Magazines and online book clubs and book sellers are already touting their summer reading lists, but I’m not very inspired by reviews that use words like “riveting”, “shattering”, “challenging” or “heart-wrenching”. Summer reading should be fun and colorful like one of those fruity cocktail drinks with a little umbrella on top. Beachy cocktails have silly, often sexy names and deliver hundreds of sweet empty calories to your body. But they sure taste good! My favorite “fun and fruity” boo... Full story

PRESCOTT - Those in search of a way to cool off are bound to find it in Prescott's very own oasis. The Prescott swimming pool will open for the 2013 season on Monday, June 17th. A great source of pride for the community, the pool was established in 1958 by the school district. During that time, the school offered swimming lessons as a part of its physical education program, and opened it up to the public for the summers. When there were legislative changes to state funding formulas for school di...

WALLA WALLA - Beethoven's "Harp" is a feast for the ears and the eyes that elementary school kids in Dayton will soak up at the Columbia County Rural Library Friday as the annual Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival kicks off this week. I feel great venerability talking about the American food chain. While Americans figure out how to slow down their lives and curb spending, the average household is becoming revolutionary in regaining its own self-reliance. However, it does put a stick in the wheel when you realize most commercial American farmers do not put our best inter- ests first, continuing to apply massive amounts of chemicals and pathogens into the earth, carcinogens and genetically modified organisms into feed lots. The thing is we are no longer isolated by distance....
Market disruption? The overseas buyers of Pacific Northwest origin white wheat – Japan in particular – have suspended procurement. This interruption in market flow is due to the discovery of a patch of wheat in Oregon apparently linked to Monsanto’s once-proposed special genetically modified strain of glyphosate-resistant wheat, which was field tested from 1998 to 2005 in many regions, including the Pacific Northwest. While there are many GE (genetically engineered) strains of other crops being marketed and used in the US and else- where... Full story
Jim (Pepe) was the sixth of seven children born to Francis and Mabel Wood. The family in descending order was Dan, Frank, George, John, Kaye, Jim and Jerry. Their mother, when provoked, worked through the list until she arrived at the perpetrators' name. Paternal discipline was meted out in the same order for infractions that nobody accepted responsibility for. Pop was in good form and did not tire easily as each child was corrected for whatever misdeed. His dad, mom, and brothers, Geor... Full story

The school year is near- ly over. I won't bore you with the details of the sketchy grades I am desperately trying to rectify before the grading period ends. And I recall spotting a Times reporter at graduation, so I'll tell you something related to my plans for this summer. We're going to California over the summer to visit my mom's brothers. We'll spend the better part of that time in the Silicon Valley with my mom's second-oldest brother, Dave, his (rather chipper) wife Carina, and their... Full story

In the spring of 1963, when John Kennedy was president and gas was 30 cents a gallon, a group of 15 Waitsburg men formed a new Lions Club and set out to help out their com- munity. And oh how they've done it. As reporter Dena Wood reports in these pages, the contri- butions the Lions - they now number nearly 70 - have made to Waitsburg have been invaluable. The club has made improvements to the race track and football fields at the fairgrounds, they've made repairs and improvements to the Waitsburg Pool and the little league fields, tennis...
