  • Farmers Remain Positive Despite Drought

    Dian Ver Valen, The Times|Jun 25, 2015

DAYTON – Anyone driving Highway 12 can see it. The wheat fields are ripening quickly. Gone are the rolling green plains. In their place are fields of shorter-than-normal, already golden grains. And it's still June. The heavens haven't blessed the Touchet Valley with rain in quite some time. And with temperatures predicted to reach the triple digits over the weekend, any additional moisture to the ground before harvest is improbable. Local farmers have mixed feelings about the drought. The s...

    The Times|Jun 25, 2015

Ten Years Ago June 30, 2005 Two hundred years ago, perhaps one way to describe the foods eaten by members of the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery is “basic.” The menu choices of those days of yesteryear will be the topic of a Fourth of July cooking demonstration entitled “Buffalo Innards and Weeds.” The 33-strong Salt & Light Music Ministry group performed its homecoming concert in Waitsburg last Friday evening before a full house, culminating a five-day tour of Northwest cities that included Hood River, Ore., Beaverton, Ore., Monmout...

  • Ken Graham: FROM THE PUBLISHER

    Ken Graham, The Times|Jun 25, 2015

I’m sure I don’t totally understand how emergency services operate in and around Waitsburg, but here’s how I can best explain it: The city of Waitsburg has a fire department that puts out fires and responds to other emergencies within the city limits. The area of Walla Walla County surrounding Waitsburg has its own fire department (WW Co. Fire District 2) that responds to emergencies outside the city, but within the county. Then there’s an area in Columbia County that’s nearer to Waitsburg...

  • Emma Philbrook: STUDENT LIFE

    Emma Philbrook, The Times|Jun 25, 2015

There are pros and cons to computers. One pro, of course, is that you can work on multiple things at once. One con, however, is that you can work on multiple things at once. Take this seemingly simple dovetail: Working on signing up for college classes while trying to write a chapter for a “collaborative fiction project.” I started off by booting up the Internet and attempting to log into my course manager. While that was loading, I typed a few paragraphs, trying to flesh out my character withou...

Preliminary results from Monday's autopsy, however, indicate that the manner of Gano's death was natural, according to Culwell. More tests will be conducted, but at this time the cause of death could not be determined "due to the condition of the body," she said. Gano's body was locate...

Portland General Electric, which owns the wind turbines recently constructed off Mead Road and surrounding properties, has proposed to pave Mead Road – the main county roadway used during construction of the Tucannon River Wind Farm. The Times|Jun 25, 2015

The robo calls, which may show as Banner Bank on a caller ID, request the recipient to press “1” for an operator, then ask for the recipient to enter his or her card information. Do not do so. “These robo-calls are part of a phishing scam attempting to obtain bank account and personal information,” said Dianne...

    Dena Wood, The Times|Jun 25, 2015

WAITSBURG/DAYTON – Guatemala City missionary David Beam cites "enjoying the wide open spaces and the beauty of the land" as a favorite experience in his recent visit to the Touchet Valley. The valley's rolling hills and waving wheat fields are a stark contrast to the "4 million people and horrible traffic" he and his wife left behind, he said. In a fun case of role reversal, David and his wife, Damaris, recently spent several days enjoying local landscape, people, events and points of i...
