I bought a machete the other day, because I was fighting a war that I was losing and I needed a better weapon. (Actually I hadn't been doing much fighting, and the war was almost lost.) It's a war against cattails: you know, those cute tall weeds with what look like long sticks with overcooked corn dogs on the end. When we bought our property along the South Touchet River more than a decade ago, it had a pond. It was a lovely pond, with a few lovely cattails lining one shore, which made it even...
WALLA WALLA COUNTY - With local grain at a critical stage for going up in flames, county commissioners, the Walla Walla County fire protection districs and area wheat farmers are joining together to ask citizens to employ extra caution during the upcoming weeks. Sparks from fireworks or a campfire can result in the loss of a crop and livelihood and even the loss of life. "Even though we have had rainfall recently, with the increasing temperatures and the maturity fo the crop, we still have the potential for extremem fire damage earlier than in...

WAITSBURG - Most 18-year-olds don't celebrate high school graduation by running a marathon -- but then most 18-year-olds aren't E.J. Meserve. On Sunday,June 22, Meserve ran as the youngest runner in the San Juan Island marathon, placing 15th out of 60 competitors. Meserve's longtime coach, Joanna Lanning and her daughter Marci Jo (Lanning) Martinez, went along to offer moral support and challenged themselves by participating in the Three Lakes Sprint Triathalon on Saturday. "I've wanted to run a...
WAITSBURG - Twentynine WP gridders traveled to the Tri-Cities last week for their annual five-day spring football camp, where they played the majority of their games at Hanford High School. Bartlow was pleased with the numbers and acknowledged that it is difficult for both the kids and the coaches to commit to. "Track and baseball just got over...
WAITSURG - Coach Jeff Bartlow wrapped up his 15th Kids Football Camp last week, and deemed it a "huge success." The camp was split into two sessions. Mornings were dedicated to offense (catching, throwing, running and blocking) and special teams (kicking, punting and snapping). Athletes then play two 7x7...
PRESCOTT - Spectators may not have heard the familiar Ty Pennington shout, "MOVE THAT BUS!" but the transformation that took place at Prescott's "vacant lot" over four days last week most certainly qualifies as an Extreme Makeover. Spectators clapped enthusiastically as Pomegranate Center Director Milenko Matanovic spoke at Sunday afternoon's ribbon cutting ceremony. "They said it was not possible to complete in four days and yet here we are! It is like the cycle of the fish etched on this...

WAITSBURG - Emry Kleck describes the food he and his wife, Sandy, serve as "modern stone age cuisine." On the wood-fired grill that he built in his shop, they cook steaks and pulled pork, chicken, fish and shellfish, along with other kinds of meat. He also grills vegetables, including his specialty, grilled lentil salad. With special marinades he has created, he sprays the meat as it cooks. "The marinade is infused in the caramelized meat which gives it a unique flavor," Kleck said. On a recent...
WAITSBURG – Jim German says that he expected his bar to always be a small sidelight to the nightlife in Waitsburg. “I thought there’d always be other bars and taverns here, and that we’d be just a small part of that,” German said recently. “I never thought we’d be the only bar left standing.” On a recent Friday night in June, jimgermanbar was standing tall. A waitress and bartender were taking drink orders and a wood-fired grill was blazing on the back patio. While a reporter sampled a new v...

WAITSBURG - Emma Philbrook - like most students - is quite familiar with the phrase, "Be all you can be." But her experience at Girls State last week left her walking away with the realization that she could be even more than she thought she could be - or at least something different. That and the state level Samsung American Legion Scholarship. Philbrook left for Evergreen Girls State, held at the Central Washington University campus in Bellingham, Wash., on Sunday, June 15 and returned home...
Ten Years Ago July 1, 2004 Curiosity got the best of Carol Mae Hodgins, proprietor of the Bullseye Gar-NGrill, when a locked safe came up on the block at Classic Auction in Waitsburg earlier this year. The safe cost $825, Hodgins said, and belonged to a Walla Walla attorney named Ringhoffer, who died a number of years ago. . . Dear Editor, I am writing to share an experience I witnessed and was a small part of with Sheriff John Turner. While employed with Providence St Mary Medical Center, I was a member of the Revenue Cycle Dept. which was approached by Sheriff Turner regarding the billing for care of inmates at the jail. Sheriff Turner urged St Mary's to help his team come up with a solution that would benefit the community while maintaining the exemplary care St Mary's is known for. As a result, a contract was put into place for services which saves the taxpayer 5...
First self-taught lesson at Girls State: Don't start a speech off with "Hi, my name is Jane Smith and I'm running for Auditor," or anything that sounds even remotely like that. At Girls State, the day starts at 6:30 in the morning and ends at eleven at night - and that's on the good nights. And so the minute your pitch starts off exactly the same as everyone else's, people start dozing off. Yup, this is it - one of the most prestigious conferences out there - affording its attendees the...
When Pomegranate Center Director Milenko Matanovic left a successful artists collective for something more meaningful, we're pretty sure what just took place in Prescott is exactly what he had in mind. Matanovic turned his focus to empowering and strengthening communities by helping them to work together to create community gathering spaces, like the one recently completed in Prescott. In just a few months, Prescott residents encouraged and supported one another in dreaming, designing and building a space that will leave a lasting legacy on...
