They call it "dry- land swimming." "We don't go in the water until it's 75 degrees," said coach Rosie Nechodom. She noted that warm weather is on the way and it won't be long. Jeff Bartlow, Guest Column|Jun 27, 2013

WAITSBURG - We went to the Tri City Football camp again and have done that this camp six out of the last seven years. It was very positive. As usual, we were missing some kids, but we gave out almost 40 sets of pads and most of those kids did the practices and 31 did the football camp. One day was spent at the University of Idaho and their team camp. We went to Idaho on Tuesday and got some work in with their coaches. It was positive. We played McCall and Pullman in scrimmages there. Chance...

  • Going Green in Walla Walla

    Dena Wood, Out and About|Jun 27, 2013

I set off late Saturday morning with the intent of attending the Sustainable Living Fair, taking the Green Home and Garden Tour and sharing my discoveries. While I did attend both events, I also took some serendipitous sidetracks and decided to do things a bit differently. My favorite feature in Walla Walla's Lifestyles magazine of years past was "Amy Kate's $99 Dollar Day". In it, Amy Kate, would spend the day visiting unique recreational venues in the area and enjoying tasty treats. She w...

    The Times|Jun 27, 2013

WAITSBURG - Bob- cats aren't always cause for alarm. In the case of Waitsburg's City Crew, the new Bobcat tractor has been a welcome addition to the City Shop. The shop's '78 Massey tractor was traded in last month, on the purchase of a lightly used Bobcat. • “An Organic Childhood”

    Ken Graham, The Times|Jun 27, 2013

DAYTON - Wesley Hoskins grew up on a farm on Whetstone creek in the 1920s and 30s. During those years he witnessed some amazing changes. In 1930, there was no electricity on the farm. By 1940, the REA co-op had brought electricity to farm- ers on the Whetstone, and throughout Columbia County. In 1930, Hoskins' fam- ily - and all their neighbors - plowed, harrowed and harvested wheat using draft horses or mules. By 1940, many farmers in Columbia County were using Caterpillar tractors. • CROPS

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Jun 27, 2013

Sometimes great trading wisdom can be found in old aphorisms or sayings. When asked whether it is better to be smart or lucky, one famous trader is said to have responded: "Some people are really lucky, and they are born smart, others are even smarter and they are born lucky." Most of us have heard "The trend is your friend" or even Calvin (speaking to Hobbes): "You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don't help." Right now, the saying that seems to fit the wheat market is, "Never sell a dull market short". That old... Full story

  • Apples and Oranges

    Jun 27, 2013

By the time you read this column, I will be on my way home from my vacation in Cali- fornia - and I'll be more than ready to glimpse gently rolling terrain, view the Big Dipper in its full (non- smog-covered) glory, and get a decent night's sleep. From talking to my cousin and her miscellaneous friends from the San Francisco metropolitan area, I had already gathered that Washington and California were at least as different as apples and oranges. (Or, more accurately, as different as Honeycrisps... Full story
