Football Camp was a shorter affair this year because the coaching staff had to leave early to coach at the All-State game in Yakima. The team had a number of kids who could not par- ticipate at camp for various reasons, which happens on occasion when it is an over- night trip like this year. The past five years WP went to the Tri City camp and trav- eled back and...

  • Waitsburg’s Decades-Old Produce Stand

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Jun 28, 2012

WAITSBURG - One of Waits- burg's best-kept secrets is on Arnold Lane, tucked back behind sweet, country houses. For the past four years, those who have driven down Arnold Lane have noticed or even stopped at the produce stand run by Ed and Cathy Lambert. And the Lambert's, though unseen from the street, have six gardens full of ripening produce fresh for the picking and selling every summer. Ed's family has lived in the house on Arnold his whole life. He and his wife Cathy raised their four...

American Indians apply a growing technique to their vegetable gardens, a technique today's organic growers call "permaculture." Permaculture is a gardening tech- nique based on following the natural ecological design nature intended for the space being used for planting a garden in a sustainable manner. "Uh?" they just call the technique, "Three Sisters," and in some cases it's as simple as this: plant corn and when 12 inches tall, plant green beans at base of the corn stalk allowing beans to climb corn stalk. At the same time, plant squash 4...

Ten Years Ago June 27, 2002 The Waitsburg City Council voted unanimously to priva- tize garbage collection, and will begin negotiations with Basin Disposal, Inc. (BDI) of Pasco, to collect garbage within the city limits. BDI was chosen due to being more city-oriented, providing assistance to senior citizens, and capacity for civic events, among other things. There will not be an increase in service price, and citizens should receive more service from BDI. This will be a two-year trial period for BDI. At the end of two years, the city could...

  • Combo Classes Not New For Waitsburg

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Jun 28, 2012

WAITSBURG - Change is never easy and some parents in the community are having difficulty wrapping their minds around the fact that the Waitsburg fourth, fifth and sixth graders will be in intermediate, mixed-grade level classes next year. However, combining grade levels is not a new concept for the district that has combined grade students in the past to handle enrollment fluctuations, district officials say. Forty-eight children will be in the fourth, fifth and sixth split starting in the fall. The split class will help the district reduce...

  • CROPS

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Jun 28, 2012

In the last week, the market has added $14 million or more in value to this summer's Walla Walla County wheat crop. White wheat for delivery to Port- land, Ore., at harvest was worth $6.65 to $6.85 just more than a week ago on June 15. As of Tuesday morning June 26, bids for the same wheat were between $7.45 and $7.50. Who to thank? The hot weather in the Midwest that is stressing the corn crop. Weather models con- tinue to forecast hot and dry weather for much of the Midwest. Parts of the Eastern corn belt -- Illinois, Indiana, and Ten-...

  • Way To Go, PHS & WHS!

    Jun 28, 2012

In the past, we've lamented the fact that parents' control over their children's choices in life seems to be dwindling. As parents, we are confronted every day with the power of marketing, the appeal of visual electronics (read: video games and television) and a legal system that leaves us with fewer and fewer means to resist the poor choices our kids make. But at least in our Touchet Valley communities, children, parents and educators seem to be making choices that are paying off for stu- dents, for the reputations of our school districts and...
