  • 2011 Harvest At Least A Week Late

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jun 30, 2011

WAITSBURG - Farmers in the Touchet Valley are predicting their harvest this year will be at least a week later than usual with fields in the Prescott and Waitsburg areas ready by the third week of July and in Dayton by early August. "Almost every farmer coming in says they'll be seven to ten days late," said Matt Weber, an agronomist with the McGregor Co.'s Waitsburg branch, which supplies them with farm chemicals. Concerned at first with the possible spread of rust, growers now welcome the somewhat cooler June temperatures that allow the... Full story

WALLA WALLA-The Walla Walla Transmission Babe Ruth team ended its summer league season with a win and a loss in the playoff tournament. The loss left them one game shy of the championship game. Last Saturday night the Waitsburg-based team faced the Eastgate Lyons in the first round of the tournament. The team wasted no time warming up to plate. Dalton Estes slammed his first pitch, sending it over the fence for a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. The Lions answered right back... Full story

DAYTON- Art enthusiasts from across the Touchet Valley visited the historic Boldman House on a sunny but breezy Saturday afternoon in Dayton. They gazed at newly-painted water-color paintings, took a home tour and munched on tasty refreshments. • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Jun 30, 2011

This weekend I catered and attended a friend's 60th birthday party. Filling the table with an array of appropriate wine tasting nibbles, everyone brought their own bottles of regional and local wines to share with one another. Somewhere in the first few sips of Balboa Winery's 09 Syrah, I pulled the wine guys arm and said, "Have you tasted this wine?" We were both floored being Syrah red wine lovers, and unsuspecting of this wineries vintage; superb in every way. Let me explain. Balboa winemaker/owner, Tom Glase is someone you can talk to....

Ten Years Ago July 5, 2001 When a series of dramatic storms passed through the area, thunderstorms clobbered the valley on June 27. The storms carried with them heavy rain, strong wind gusts and three-quarter to one-inch hail. The Joint Fire District No. 2 received a new fire truck, which has numerous custom features and will save taxpayers about $45,000 over comparable fire trucks. Local artist Cathy Abel took second place in Walla Walla's Carnegie Art Museum second annual Juried Art Show last week. Her watercolor California Beach was judged... Full story

  • Streetscape Project Takes Shape

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jun 30, 2011

WAITSBURG - The $5,000 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation, the charitable arm of Cycle Oregon, couldn't have come at a better time for Waitsburg's Main Street. The young deciduous trees planted in the sidewalk a few years ago didn't do so well this year, so the colorful flower baskets and flowers added to the street lights and planters are bringing some needed cheer to the downtown area. "The flowering trees took a hit from last November's cold snap and the bizarre spring we've had,"...

  • Waitsburg Has History As Valley Boom Town

    Jane Butler, Guest Column|Jun 30, 2011

Recently I had the opportunity to look through some interesting travel books about the state of Washington. Among them, I found "Exploring Washington's Past," written by Ruth Kirk and Carmela Alexander. Kirk and Alexander's book gives an excellent background into the history of the state, especially rural areas. In this book it has a section that discussed the town of Waitsburg, its size and the local community. " In 1871, a visitor to Waitsburg described the little town as "The most enterprising and thrifty of any town, except Walla Walla, in...

  • The Voices Of Hope

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jun 30, 2011

WAITSBURG - On one of the nights of the Salt & Light youth choir's state tour last week, the group of 23 young singers from the Touchet Valley came together in a circle to share what they felt was special about the Christian ministry. The theme of this year's tour was "Got Hope?" Kyla Ihle, a senior from Dayton High School, was already in tears before it was her turn to share. " I've been struggling with hope throughout my life," Ihle said. "Salt & Light helped me find that hope." Feeling safe...

The series will focus on changes and developments since last year's management study and review. D AYTON - More than a year after Columbia County Health System's board of commissioners called in a consultant to help the hospital district with its management issues, the controversy over staffing has largely blown over. In some departments, such as the... Full story

DAYTON - The Dayton City Council Monday moved adopted a six-year transportation plan that includes several infrastructure projects for roadways, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, storm drains and bridges. The transportation plan has 18 different projects that could begin as early as 2012 and last through 2017. • ‘Saturday Market’ Drops Request For First St. Exclusive

David Depoy, Special To The Times|Jun 30, 2011

DAYTON - The Dayton Saturday Market, the new farmer's market group which wanted exclusive use of First Street in Dayton for its stalls on Saturday mornings, has withdrawn its request to the city. Jacci Wooten, volunteer manager of the recently formed group and former manager of the Dayton Farmers' Market, it was better not to pursue the request. "I pulled it from the agenda," Wooten said. She would not elaborate further. Despite the recent split that led to two farmers' markets using the same...
