Two more trials that could lead to much longer sentences await Hermanns, the first of which begins on Wednesday, July 13. The second has been set for July 18. Hermanns, who pleaded guilty to the charge of theft in the second degree last month for taking automotive parts from the Waitsburg property of Todd and Beth Ann Wood on Jan. 21 this year, was...

WAI T SBURG - One's a cow girl. One's a mother of two. One's a chef. One's a graduate wine maker. One's a journalist. Coppei Coffee's core team couldn't be more different or their paths to the town's new culinary crossroads more varied. Yet they have more than a few things in common when it comes to their vision and passion for Waitsburg's soon-to-open coffee house on Main Street. "I want it to be a place where you can come to soak in and enjoy the morning," said Marc Bru, Coppei Coffee's genera...

  • Petanque!

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jul 7, 2011

WALLA WALLA - On a trip to the south of France in the late 1990s, Marvin Wood saw Petanque played for the first time. In the late afternoon, the men would come out to the sun-splashed gravel courts under shade trees in the parks or along the boulevards in the villages near Marseille and toss their boules after a little pilot ball, or jack, then compete fiercely to make their steel balls cozy up to it. The game seemed social and leisurely yet fascinating because of its demand on hand-eye...

  • Art From The Heart

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jul 7, 2011

DAYTON - When Yance Yost asked his friend and gallery owner Claire Johnston if she might be interested in placing one of his pieces in the jimgermanbar, which she runs with her husband, the answer was "no." Yost dropped his head in disappointment. He didn't think that his piece, a wired collage of empty picture frames accompanied by a poem about the images that "used to lie inside," "sucked that bad." Then he realized Johnson hadn't finished answering his question. "But you can have two months...

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Jul 7, 2011

Grandma Moses really knew a pastoral scene when she saw one, captivating America in the 1950s with her oil paintings depicting the American country way of life. Today, I thought I was seeing through Grandma Moses' eyes, barreling through the country side heading for Spokane, north on Highway 12. The one farm I really enjoy seeing each time I head north on this route, is the one on the left hand side of the road; tucked into its own minuscule valley, a lazy pond, weeping willows, Guernseys dotting the field with a red barn in the distance. When...

"Trailer" doesn't actually captures their new abode, which comes with a shower, bathroom, living room, dining...

  • Dear Editor:

    Jul 7, 2011

My daughter and I were very disappointed to find out as we headed to the Waitsburg swimming pool on a recent Saturday that it is closed on the weekends. I am a mom with a full time job and I am unable to take my child to the pool during the weekdays. I was looking forward to spending quality time with my daughter which I was able to do by driving to the Prescott Pool. During the time we spent at the Prescott pool two Parents and four children from the Waitsburg community came to swim. I would prefer not to have to drive to another town when I...

  • The Road To Recovery

    Jul 7, 2011

The last time I wrote about my friend and his son with Ewing's sarcoma, the teenager was just going into treatment. This was back in early fall, when Niko and I went hiking with Michael and Orion, my friend's older son, while Tally, his youngest, was at the hospital as part of his prolonged preparations for his eventual surgery. We just walked up an old logging road near Snoqualmie Pass, my four-month-old Dizzy weaving between our feet along the path. Michael and I listened to Niko and Orion's...

DAYTON - Touchet Valley residents showed up in big numbers for the rare chance to see the circus and get acquainted with some of the world's most exotic animals in Dayton on Thursday. Local promoters said more than 3,000 visitors took in one of two Carson & Barnes circus shows that ran the gamut from spectacular trapeze and trampoline acts to elephant rides and skateboard gymnastics. "Many people after the circus told us that they couldn't believe such a good circus stopped in Dayton," local...
