DAYTON - After seven years of setbacks and conflicts, Elizabeth Jagelski's childhood dream is materializing into reality on the Liberty Theater's stage. The Touchet Valley Arts Council, under Jagelski's direction, will perform Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" this fall. While the classic musical is less familiar to many than the iconic Disney version, it has a special place in Jagelski's heart: "This was the first musical I ever watched as a child," she said. The version starring Lesley...
PULLMAN - College is typically a time for growth and new experiences. But for former Dayton High School valedictorian and athlete Malia Frame, tougher academics and new friendships weren't enough. The Business Administration and Agriculture Technology and Production Management double-major decided to experience a whole new world as an athlete as well - collegiate rowing. Frame said she heard about WSU's rowing team long before she considered trying out. She knew of several Dayton alumni who...
DAYTON - Jim Gallaher is a "Mule Guy." Only a Mule Guy would drive ten miles each way every day to check on his mule and feed her. "Every day," he said. "In the rain or in the snow; it doesn't matter." Gallaher bought his mule in May from a horse breeder in Pilot Rock, Ore. She's unbroken, and her name is Junie. ("I don't know how to spell it," he said. "I didn't name her.") He pronounces it "joo-nee," so The Times decided how to spell it (since we like making up our own spellings). Gallaher...

When I heard that Bluegrass singer Mark Holt will be performing at the Grain House Grill during the upcoming Mule Mania! Days I recognized it as the perfect opportunity to interview Grill owners Nathan and Dawna Krekula. The fact that my visit was perfectly timed so that I could enjoy my favorite Bacon Bleu Burger with their specialty beer-battered Sidewinder fries was a calculated bonus. The Krekulas moved to Dayton about three years ago and live with their four children, ages 10 - 16, on 25...
Dear Editor, When Sheriff Turner took office in 2011 I spent a large amount of time reviewing several years of the Walla Walla County and Sheriff's Office financial reports, in order to fully understand the budgeting and accounting process. As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), I wanted to know the history and pattern of expenditures, as well as what Sheriff Turner had to work with. A couple of things became obvious quickly. First, in order to deeply understand the accounting and budgeting process involved in managing the Sheriff's budget...

Please continue to join me and support our local fire department, volunteer firefighters, 911 dispatch and County Emergency Services. They do a...

A sk any private eye and they'll tell you - "There's no feeling like plunking another file in the "solved" tray, especially when that case was as stressful as my last one." A couple months back, a fellow came in asking me to check out an outfit called Smithton Amalgamated Trading. The pay was good, but the job was hard. It was a case with more dead ends than a corpse's hairdo. I got my client what he needed, and he was more than a little surprised when I gave it to him. "You - you made it out,"...
A s Colorado and Washington state approve the sale of marijuana for recreational use and other states consider following suit, [the head of the National Institute on Drug Abuse in Bethesda, Md., Nora] Volkow says, the notion that legalization represents a modest, cost-free move is dangerously overblown. The evidence on the supposed safety of marijuana - particularly marijuana in its modern, far more potent form - is far from clear enough to take this leap. "I think that what we are seeing is a little bit of wishful thinking in the sense that we...
