WAITSBURG-Tuesday afternoon, Waitsburg residents saw a familiar sight at harvest-three wildland engines and a tender heading towards a fire, with sirens blaring. The trucks left in quick succession from the Columbia Walla Walla Fire District #2 (CWWFD2) fire station, carrying eight volunteers who turned out for the call. The call was for a standing wheat field fire on the west side of Lower Waitsburg Road in Fire District #7. The Waitsburg crew joined fire districts #7, 9, 4, City of Walla Walla...

To the Editor As we stood in the front yard looking at a fleet of fire trucks and water trucks from three counties this afternoon, I was filled with deep gratitude and admiration for the crews that showed up to stamp out the wheat fire that had, just minutes before, come within 50 yards of my house. Jake Adams – Captain of the volunteer Columbia Walla Walla Fire District #2 stationed in Waitsburg, was first on the scene, along with my neighbor farmer and friend, Bill Frazier. The wheat fire t...

Chris Dowsett’s winemaking resumé would occupy this entire page. Suffice it to say that the family brand is his most personal, and this often-overlooked grape his particular passion. This is a dry, full-bodied wine sourced from an old vine site in the Columbia Gorge. Such richness as you’ll find here is exceptional, and this is supported by tangy citrus and underlying wet stone minerality, while keeping the aggressive perfume character of Gewurz in check. A substantial, evocative wine, this...
July may seem an odd time to talk about the hardest-hitting and most fun-to-watch sport, which requires great skill to speed around (both forward and backward) to make stunning plays—all on ice. Now that the NHL and AHL playoffs have wrapped up and the NHL draft was just concluded, why not talk about hockey? Reflecting on the great things that happened in our area’s hockey programs this year, I have high hopes for next year, starting in September. What was so great? Ohhh, let me count the ways. National Hockey League In the Seattle Kra...
I recently returned to L.A. for the sole purpose of renewing my California driver’s license. I hope this will be my final foray into the famous (or infamous) California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Under California law, drivers of a certain age no longer qualify for an automatic renewal. It is now required to take both the written and vision tests, which I last took five years ago. I am still having nightmares over that day. First, I was traveling and had to wait until two days before m...

Ten Years Ago July 11, 2013 At five minutes 'til noon here this July 4, a small cadre of servicemen advanced with Old Glory and service flags to an agreed upon rendezvous point – the intersection of Main Street and Third. Once assembled, the eight men spread the width of the street – six hoisting the colors, the other two bookending the group as rifle bearers. At the sounding of the noon siren, the unit advanced in patriotic reverence two blocks toward the hardware store to the sound of the app...
This time of year, apart from the occasional burger or sausage on the grill, I find myself craving meals made up mostly of fresh seasonal vegetables. There are certain vegetables and fruits that never taste as good as they do in the middle of summer. This week we had some beautiful spinach ready to harvest, along with the first of our zucchini, which got me thinking about minestrone. This summery take on the classic Italian soup recipe is full of vibrant flavors and colors. Finished with fresh...
