  • Art & The Animal Kingdom

Clarissa Caldwell, Special To The Times|Jul 14, 2011

DAYTON - Jackie Penner believes God put her on earth to care for the animals that cross her path. A few years ago, Penner adopted a newborn starling and taught it to whistle Yankee Doodle Dandy. The starling also learned to say "be nice" just before it stopped coming back to the farm. She cried when it didn't return. "Imagine that," she says. "Sixty years old and I'm bawling because my bird is gone." Animals are one of Penner's two biggest passions. The other is art. Painting is where she...

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Jul 14, 2011

Talking with a restaurateur in the town of Dayton today, about the behavior of some small town retailers who copy one another's ideas and seem to go about their merry way never realizing everyone in town is aware of their blunder. In the case of someone stealing another's menu ideas or successful product lines to serve in their own shops, it just shows a lack of respect for other retailers and one's own creativity. Have you perpetrators forgotten your own truth in the term, "culinary arts?" Back in 2002, no one in the entire Touchet Valley had...

  • Nursery Rhyme Or Reason

    Jul 14, 2011

We don't comment very often on letters submitted by readers, but in the case of the correspondence from Sharon Spenard of Dayton published on our opinion page this week we'd like to make an exception. This seems as good a time as any to shed a little more light on the situation in which Ace Landscaping owner John Palmer finds himself. County officials have approached him about possible zoning violations involving his new nursery off Highway 12 between Waitsburg and Dayton, following several complaints, presumable from local residents. Mr. Palme...

  • Dear Editor:

    Jul 14, 2011

Bringing jobs to the county is of vital importance Ace Landscaping is trying to improve our county. Their business property is very well done and improves that portion of Highway 12. • Dayton’s Mad About Mules

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jul 14, 2011

DAYTON - When you hear Bobbi and Barney Chambers talk about Sophie, Cleo, Denny, Lone Star and Superdude, you'd think they're talking about a circus family of seven that's not getting enough quality time together. " We don't see them enough," Bobbi Jo Chambers says about her loved ones. "We're putting on too many of these shows." But the couple from Cottonwood, Idaho, a town about two and a half hours from Dayton, is actually pining after more time with their show mules, some of which they've had for almost a decade. It's unlikely the tan and c...
