DAYTON - When it comes to enjoying his work, Dain Henderson knows what he's doing. The 18-year-old Waitsburg resident who will be attending Dayton High School as a senior this fall knew he had his senior project coming up. So he put his mind to planning and found a way to combine his favorite pastime with his project - helping organize the annual Young Life golf tournament at the Touchet Valley Golf Course, in Dayton. Henderson, who has been golfing with the high school team since his freshman...
In the comfort of giant overalls and straw hat I write this column. That's right. I too have a small garden that needs lots of attention, especially the tomato plants and herb garden. At the moment, my kitchen smells like a cottage in Provence; lavender, marjoram and basil tied and hung to dry for winter's use. Of course, I love the smell of France and all that, but I could do without the heat we've had to contend with these past few days. After a day in the garden a sauce ensues made with plenty of goodies pinched, cut, snipped and...

Ten Years Ago August 10, 2000 Reports indicate an excellent yield and quality for crops as grain farmers are in the thick of Harvest 2000. Fire and harvest mishaps have been very few. Some 30 soccer enthusiasts are participating in the Sixth Annual Waitsburg Soccer Camp directed by Joanna Lanning this week. Twenty Five Years Ago July 25, 1985 Bob Abbey, Touchet Valley Grain Growers' manager, said it appears that the wheat crop in the valley will be approximately 30 percent off from last year's crop. Timothy James Gray, a 1985 graduate of W...
Even before a lighting storm roared through the Touchet Valley Monday night, setting at least one wheatfield on fire, our local population of wild animals must have sensed something was in the offing. According to the ColumbiaCounty Sheriff's report, a horse got loose and wandered off to the City Shop Storage containers on South Willow Street; a yearling moose was spotted near N. 4th St and Patit Avenue, and two deer were trapped inside a fenced Columbia REA substation. All in the span of...

WAITSBURG - When the Whetstone Public House reopens after its annual maintenance possibly later this week, patrons will notice something different about the place. The bar will look the same after its spring cleaning, plumbing repairs, general maintenance and inventory audit. Even the hours will remain. But you won't find the same menu nor the same offering of hard liquor. "This year, our maintenance period will also coincide with some fundamental shifts in the business model for the Whetstone...

Dear Editor: The Commerce Committee of the Commercial Club of Waitsburg is excited to share a new project. The vision of the project is to silhouette each of the downtown buildings with lights. The committee members have researched lighting and found that LED rope lights are very attractive and are the most economical, using only pennies of electricity for any given building each day. Marilyn and I have received many favorable comments about the lights on the Plaza during the Christmas season. One of the most gratifying comments came from a...
WALLA WALLA - After Lucy's passing early last week, we were keen on getting another dog but decided to look into adopting one instead of going to a breeder. That was after we had briefly considered the idea of getting a Lakeland Terrier (a cross between Lucy's breed, an Airdale, and our other dog, Snowy, a Fox Terrier) and found out the closest Lakeland Terrier breeder is well past Boise and charges $1,200 for a puppy. $1,200!?! You gotta be kidding me! Hey, we thought, there are far too many un...

DAYTON - More than two dozen Dayton residents looked on in interest as friends, relatives and neighbors argued for and against a proposed city law that would allow off-road vehicle users to access mountain roads via city streets. The ORV ordinance was slated for its first reading during Monday night's city council meeting, which took place across the street from city hall at St. Joseph's Catholic Church to accommodate the crowd. But after more than half an hour of testimony and complaints from constituents, Dayton city officials agreed to postp...
WALLA WALLA - Last year, 2.2 million tons of products were shipped through the Little Goose navigation lock near Starbuck - and much of these commodities moving downriver came from farms like those in the Touchet Valley. Wheat, barley, petroleum products (like fuel), fertilizer, hay cubes, peas, lentils, milk carton stock, containers full of merchandise, even wind turbines - 10 million tons of cargo - all travel the Columbia Snake River system each year. Now these companies are making plans t...
