WAITSBURG - In a town like Waitsburg, the start of fire season has an unmistak- able sound. It's not the tone of the Main Street siren, it's the frequency. If composer Claude De- bussy was right about music being the silence between the notes, the composition that announces the most ignitable time of year picked up sev- eral beats this weekend. And if local fire fighting officials are right about the conditions that can feed the flames, this summer could be more wor- risome than previous ones....
(DAYTON) Columbia County Hospital District Chief Executive Officer Dale E. Polla resigned Thursday following a special executive session of the Board of Commissioners. Polla leaves the District after nearly a year of service. The Board of Commissioners cited several compelling factors to Polla’s resignation; including a change in the direction of District's overall management, embrace of the detalls of the coming Affordable Care Act and the long-term operational health of the public hospital. Polla was compensated for the remainder of his e...
Techno- Savings While we all know that computers, smartphones and app purchases cost us money, I wonder how many of us take advantage of the ways they can save us mon- ey. If you become familiar with a few good resources and are willing to spend an extra couple of minutes prior to making a purchase, your computer or smartphone can nearly always save you some cash. At the very least, it can let you rest assured that you're getting a good deal. Retailmenot.com is a website that I visit frequently...
This month's book re- views are provided by Amy Rosenberg, manager of the Dayton Memorial Library. Northanger Abbey It seems to me that when most people discuss Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice gets all the attention. Every other summer or so, I like to revisit my pal Jane and I reread all six of her published books. P & P has a well-deserved place in the literary cannon. It's arguably the first modern novel. Every formulaic rom-com you've ever seen has Pride and Prej- udice to thank, because...
WAITAITSBURG - If you’ve been to Disneyland or the Cirque de Soleil, or have seen any of the super hero movies like Spider-Man, Iron Man or The Avengers, you’ve seen Scott Fisher’s work. He’s the guy that makes men fly. Or at least he was. For now at least, Fisher has left the business of building large-scale machinery and control systems for entertainment venues in his rear view mirror. The open road is his life, or roads rather—specifically back roads as he travels the country in his red 19...

DAYTON - If this year's National Night Out at the Dayton City Park sounds like business as usual, it's true for the most part. About 1,000 people, almost half Dayton's population, are expected to turn out next Tuesday, Aug. 6, for the anti-crime, anti-drug event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and local law enforcement. Between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., some 40 exhibits will be on hand on the park lawn. There will be food, prizes and a movie as in years past. But one important a...

DIXIE - Memories run deep for new Dixie Gro- cery owner Cindy Tate and her sister Patty Bunch. "I've wanted to own the store for years, so when the opportunity presented itself, I couldn't pass it up." Tate envisions the store becoming a mini-museum and social hub in addition to being a grocery stop. Tate, her sister Patty and brother-in-law Gary Bunch moved to the...

Beasley takes over the job from Jeff Pietila, who resigned the post to return to classroom teaching. Beasley, a district employee since 1968, has instructed middle school science in recent years and has served as the district's tech- nology director. Beasley will bring a record of firm discipline to the job as well as long experience in...
I n the summer months, I pick vegetables from the garden and visit the Dayton farmers market for foods I don't grow. Later, I'll wash, dry and freeze some of summer's bounty for winter use and I don't go to great lengths to do so. For instance, I simply remove the stems from tomatoes and like big red marbles, lay the tomatoes flat in freezer-bags and stack in the freezer. By the holidays, I'll usually have enough frozen tomato to make a rich red sauce for a big pan of lasagna on Christmas Day. Some of you freezing garden vegetables may have...
There are no looming shadows in the northern hemisphere corn and soybean production areas. Plenty of worries, with some small zones seeing drought, but nothing strong enough to move the markets. Crop condition reports from the largest 18 producing states reflect continued steady development of both corn and soybeans in the US, with corn at 63% good-to-excellent (GTE), unchanged from last week, and soybeans also at 63%, 1% lower. The crop is late, but the subsoil moisture is there, and there is no extreme heat showing on the map. For wheat...

I 've been depressed on and off for the past week or so. Blame it on the stir-crazies, a lack of social exposure, or the fact that I haven't taken ad- vantage of all this great sun we've been getting, but I've been feeling down lately. It reached a fever pitch on Sunday. Don't ask me why, don't ask me how. But it was bad, folks. Real bad. I had a bad feeling about the trip we were taking Sun- day afternoon - to Bennington Lake in order to use our newly-purchased kayaks. Besides the fact that I...
It's not too often that we have dinner with a guest from our Seven Porches Guest House. But the traveler who stayed with us this weekend happened to wander into the Whoop Em Up Hollow Cafe so we invited him to pull up a chair and join us for a glass of rose and a bite to eat. I've always liked that about the Whoop and eater- ies like that. Patrons greet, chat and co-mingle inside or on the terrace: evening sun, company and good food - what's not to like? When Scott Fisher made the booking on the...
I f you didn't expect fire season to start until well into August, take note. It's here and it could get bad. But the good news is that some fires are preventable and some are containable. One of the biggest challenges for farming communities on the drier side of the state is that harvest, one of the busi- est times of year out in the fields, is also the riskiest when it comes to fire danger. We visited with local fire specialists, Chief Jim Callahan and Captain Brian Callahan, to go over some...

WAITSBURG - Megan Mor- rison found her prince long before she became a Princess. The member of the 2013 Waitsburg Court who hails from a household of few means, received 'Tex' as a gift three years ago from an older family friend who no- ticed the 12-year-old was the only one who could handle the feisty old rodeo horse. "Tex was picky," Mor- rison, now 15, said through her tears during a recent interview at an equestrian event in Walla Walla. "If he didn't like you, he'd let you know." The...
